It is much easier (and less expensive) to alter down a size than up a size. However, it can be done but only up to one or two sizes. Otherwise its going to look like another dress with lots more fabric. I do not recommend it.

@GMelanie:  I doubt it. I’ve had a dress (albeit not a wedding gown) let out and I was barely able to get it up one size.

Plus, wedding gowns run small.

You can usually only let out a wedding dress by one size. You could add a lace up back to give some more room if its currently a zip

@GMelanie:  I doubt it unless there is a lot of fabric in the seams. But I doubt there would be anywhere near 3 sizes there. It would probably alter the way the dress hangs as well.

Depends on the type of dress it is and the availability of more of the same fabric. 99% of the time though it isn’t possibly. My dress has an organza overlay that makes it impossible to be let out at all. You are better off getting a dress that is too big.

I don’t think so? I believe it’s possible to alter down that much, but I think you can only alter up 1-2 sizes.

To make a dress bigger the fabric has to come from somewhere. It’s highly unlikely that there would be enough fabric in the seams to go up that many sizes. The only other way is to add in extra panels (depending on the style), and to do that you need matching fabric.

Far easier to just get a different dress.
