it looks great i'm so glad that you allowed us to see the progress!! totally off topic but that's a kick arse sink!!
That's so cool! I wish I had something like that in my family. I especially love the floaty skirt.
@ cbre: ha, I'll tell my FMIL you said that. She just had her bathroom redone this fall!
Thanks all, I'm pretty excited about it! Also relieved that it actually looks good on me!
Wow, you look beautiful. I think it's so great that you were able incoporate your grandma's dress into your wedding AND make it your own a little. :) Gorgeous!
That's great! How wonderful to be able to wear such a special dress on your big day!
The dress is beautiful! You are glowing in it! How special for you to be able to wear your grandmother's dress!
That's awesome - I think it's great that your dress has such a cool story behind it.
@GaBGal: The dress itself was originally strapless, but my grandmother wore this little tulle jacket over the top so they could get married in the Catholic church in the 50's... because tulle hides so much skin! lol. There is no way my linebacker shoulders fit into the jacket.
I should add, I decided to wear these shoes:
oh my gosh! That is amazing!!! seriously, I am so happy for you to be able to wear something that means so much to you- AND you look so happy (and beautiful) in it!!!
Yippie!!!
Very cute! So glad it has turned out well. You should post a pic of grandma in the dress.
Yes I'd love to see the before pic :) This looks great though!
I will post my grandma's wedding photos as soon as my mom scans them!
The dress has a cool history. My gran wore it in 1951 to marry my gramps. She then loaned it to a friend to wear for her wedding in 1954. The friend had come from Holland to marry her childhood sweetheart, who'd emigrated after World War II and was a farm hand for my grandma's dad. So I'll be the third person to wear it!
That's so neat! What a meaningful dress - and gorgeous too! Do you think you'll continue to pass it along after your wedding?
@luckyyou: After a crappy situation with my dad's mom's dress (cousin who wore it 9 years ago wouldn't let me wear it!), I've agreed with all of my girl cousins on my mom's mom's side (whose dress this is) that the dress essentially reverts back to my grandma. Cousins are more than welcome to make alterations to it (as I have) and wear it, and Gran can leave it to whomever the heck she wants when she passes away.
I'm realistically borrowing it from her. It's not mine, you know?
@CHK: Ah, I see. That's so interesting though - its such a meaningful piece and it's great that you all agreed upon what to do with it. And if any one else decides to wear it, I'm sure it will be really interesting to track it's changes. It's really a gorgeous dress - I can't wait to see it all finished!
My mom sent me a jpeg of my grandma's friend wearing the dress for her 1953 wedding, and I wanted to share it. I won't be wearing the little jacket thing, or a veil like that (love the Catholic church weddings!), but the dress looks so great on her. And how handsome is he in his '50's suit!!!
(the photo is off center, totally, but you still get the idea)
edited for photo size.
Wow, that dress is beatiful. It's amazing how it still looks so cool & modern even after almost 60 years!
oh how neat...I thought about having something done with my grandmother's wedding dress, but it was soo tiny and I couldn't bear to make such drastic changes....who knows my tiny sis may be able to wear it someday soon!
I love that the dress comes with a story too. I'll be the third woman to wear it, and I can't help but feel a sort of obligation to live up to the two marriages it's already seen; 59 and 57 years, respectively!
wow, your version of the dress is beautiful and so is the original! what a fabulous piece of history to be able to wear in your wedding

I've posted before that I'm wearing my mom's mom's dress from the early 1950's for our July wedding. I originally thought they married in 1953; nope- 1951!
I will actually be the third bride to wear it. One of grandma's friends (who is still alive) wore it for her wedding after she emigrated from Holland to America in 1952 to marry her husband, who worked on grandma's dad's farm. Cool story, huh?
My FMIL is doing the alterations. We added panels in the side to make the bodice bigger, and since it was too long for me, she cut the waist opening down on the skirt of the dress, which made it wider at the waist, and shorter at the hem. She just needs to finish some minor alterations and we're good to go
Not bad, eh! I'm SO EXCITED!
