This seems to be normal pratice, at least in NYC. Kleinfeld actually charges $575!! Saks charges $450 and Amsale charges $400. Does seem a bit crazy but I think a lot of work goes into even a simple change. If you do end up buying the dress, make sure the $350 includes EVERYTHING - including your bustle!
Thanks jcabc, now $350 doesnt seem so bad! haha. Are there other ladies out there who have had a la carte alterations so to speak? I am really curious how much each things costs, and if not that, just how much alterations costs outside of these bridal houses in general.
i'm getting my dress altered at a non-bridal house in nyc. alterations will cost $400 which include taking my dress in at the zipper, sewing in cups, getting my dress hemmed and doing a bustle. I was given a la carte pricing but i think it all depends on how much of each thing you're doing.
I have a very simple Nicole Miller dress that I took to their recommended spot, Village Tailors (in SoHo), for alterations. It's really more of a dry cleaners, but they alter designer gowns all the time. I had cups sewn in, the sides taken in, straps shortened, and a bustle for $135. But keep in mind, my dress did not have any beading, lace, etc. to drive up the price! ![]()
i got my dress at RK sample sale and they don't alter sample dresses so i had to find an affordable alternative. i went with G+G Cleaners, they've been mentioned on this board as well as on theknot...this is not a bridal salon, it's a mom-n-pop dry cleaner...my dress is beaded lace and i was weary about a non bridal place but I still went to see the cost of it. when i got there, the dressing room is literally a curtain next to the counter...angela is a sweetheart and reassures me that she'll do a great job and showed me several dresses hung up with lace waiting for alterations so i felt more comfortable with it. i had the dress taken in 2 sizes, hem about 1", added buttons to the back, fixed some loose beads and lace, and added a simple 1point bustle..the cost came out to be around $200...i also took my qipao and evening gown dress to get them alter and the total came out to be less than $350...i was very satisfied with the results and all 3 dresses fits me like a glove unless i gain or lose any weight from now till the wedding. they even had my dresses steamed/pressed...
Please let me know the address or contact info of G+G cleaners...
I just brought my dream gown at a sample sale and it needs some cleaning and alteration.

I found my dress at RK Bridal. It's gorgeous and I love it and was super excited. Until I found out they charge a $350 flat alteration fee. I dont know yet what i would need done yet obivously, but from the sample i tried on it probably wont be more that taking it in a little in certain places, hemming and a bustle. Would I save money getting it altered elsewhere? Or does $350 seem reasonable? TIA.
