I'll upload a picture of the dress in a couple of days (it's currently as my mums to avoid my naughty cats) just in case this helps with the alteration advice :)
My bridal shop said about 10-12 weeks before the wedding you can start alternations. Alot of women get their dresses taken in so it should be fine. Mine will need to be taken in about one size so I hope it doesn't look bad :)
Altering a dress down a couple sizes shouldn't be a big deal for a good seamstress. I ordered my dress in a size 10, since that's my hip size, but the bust had to be taken down to a size 4 and they did a fine job. with the much size change.
As for the timing, if you are seriously worried about it not being done right and you needing time to get something different, you could always go ahead and have the first round of alterations done now (just make sure they don't cut anything, that they just do the basic tacking up and basting instead of actually cutting and sewing) and then finalize them once you give the OK that they fit is right, then just wait until 2-3 months before the wedding and have it finished up according to your size at that point.... or if you don't like it after the first round, then you'll have enough time to find something new.
My salon said to start alterations about 3 months before the wedding. I will probably start mine a bit earlier, since I am out of town and will have to plan trips home for fittings.
I started mine 2 months before the wedding. It's being taken in, hemmed, bustle added and beading added. Didn't need to do a rush job, and my seamstress (Darcy from Fragile Fit) didn't even blink. She rocks.
Thanks girls! I'll probably go in to the bridal shop and speak to the owner about how busy she is. I remember she said that she's always quite busy with alterations so I'll talk to her about when's best. I might try and get the first preparations done (tacking) in a few months depending on wait for alterations
Thanks again for the advice!

Hey Bees,
I purchased my wedding dress last summer (2 years from the wedding) as I had walked past it nearly everyday for a year and loved it. When I tried it on it was big (I'm flat chested and it was strapless), it would definitely have fallen down if I wasn't holding it up.I bought it despite the size issue as the designer assured me it could be altered to fit, plus she sold it to me for only £250 (as it was a sample).
My question is this, when do you get your dress altered? My wedding as about a year from now and I have no clue when to take it back. I'm worried that, if it's altered too early that my weight will change and that it won't fit by the time I get married. Also, I know that'll keep wanting to try it on just to make sure it fits (meaning that it'll probably need to be cleaned before I get married atleast once). The problem is that I'd also be worried if it was altered later, as they could be problems (it might not look good with all alterations) and it would be too late.
My other question is: can a dress still look great if it's downgraded 1-2 sizes? I'd hate for the alterations to cost more than if I'd have just ordered the dress in the correct size.
Thanks for reading bees, I'm a real worrier!
