Putting 1000 or 2000 of the wedding on a credit card isn't a good idea. I know it doesn't seem like a lot but if you only pay the minimum it will take years to pay it off. Can you babysit or petsit in your area? Tutor children? Sell things on ebay? Have any crafting ability to sell things on etsy?
Going through your home, and seeing if you have extra books or anything else you can sell on eBay or another online place is always a good idea. If you have a house, you can do a yard sale (though the time of year for that may not be good). You could also try to rigoursly save - for example, when you go somewhere and use a coupon, take the money you saved and put it into a wedding account - or, if you skip going out to lunch or getting a morning coffee, put that money right into your wedding account.
I, personally, don't want to go into debt for my wedding, so I don't think taking out loans or putting a lot on credit cards is a great idea...
All those things are out except selling on ebay, I am a mom of a 6 year old and I work nights so I am stuck in the dark ages of day to day life lol. If we did get a loan or a credit card we wouldnt be paying only the minimum. We are going to be saving about 12,000 for the wedding in a year I just dont think we'll have quite enough.
I also donate plasma and get paid 200 a month for that.....I just wish I could get the boy to do that too :P
Don't rack up charges on the credit card. Just don't do it. People always say "oh, we'll just do X amount" and X amount ALWAYS turns into 3 times that, which means it takes 3x as long to pay off and you rack up that much more interest. It's just not a smart or responsible thing to do.
Are there things you can cut out of your daily life that will let you save money? Maybe not going out to eat as much, using coupons at the grocery store, leaving the kid (or boy) at home when you go grocery shopping (they always want to add stuff) and shop from a list? Netflix instead of going to the theater? Buying only what you REALLY need?
A weird thing that that I've found that works is getting cash back to the next 5 dollar amount. For instance, if your total is $12.37, get $2.63 back and stick it in a jar when you get home. Sometimes I even go up to the next $10... you don't really notice that money being gone but it adds up quickly!
@josephine1711 - I think you're really just asking us permission to use your credit cards, then. It's not something I would do (and one of my goals for the wedding was not to go into any kind of debt doing so), but if that's the only way that you feel you can heavy the wedding you want, then go for it.
Is it possible to scale down your wedding plans? We spent way less than $12k and we didn't have to go into any debt for the wedding.
There is a website called Flexjobs.com where you can subscribe for all types of freelance jobs including writing articles for websites and blogs, admin work, etc. Jobs that you can do from home. Check it out.
You can have a yard sale and ask all your friends and family to bring over items so that you can generate more cash. I think an even bigger payback is Craigslist because you could probably get more for your money than you would selling your items at a yard sale.
I would not get into debt for a wedding. You can do A LOT with $12k! If you can't make that budget work, is there any way you can get a little OT at work and put that towards the wedding? With my job, I can squeeze in a little OT. If I can work a few OT hours a month and bank that, that adds up.
Also, seems like many ladies here are putting money in CD's or other interest bearing accounts so that they are making money off the money they save. That might help.
There are also things on Craig's List that are short-term gigs, people wanting help with events, product studies, etc. Do you have any skill that you can advertise on Craig's List?
Also just looking at your monthly budget and your expenses may help. By readjusting my insurance policy, I am saving an extra $60 a month!
