when is your wedding? i like this idea from martha stewart of using colorful fruits and/or vegetables, but i could only see it going with a kind of country themed wedding.
check out the marth stewart website though, they have tons of centerpiece ideas there!

It's a daytime Sunday wedding in October. Plenty of sunlight so not sure candles will be as effective as during an evening affair. And we'd rather not do pumpkins, leaves and the like. More on the side of cheerful colors? Our chairs are almost cobalt blue and mor than likely going for white tablecloths and simple place settings.
this is still along the lines of using flowers but what about some sort of potted plant

Does your venue have anything you can use? Sometimes they have votives and small vases you can use. Then you could just put a few stems of fresh flowers in the vase.
I like these - they are colored foam blocks you can mess around with them and something to put on top.
What about a clear vase filled with confetti like so (this stuff is ecofriendly) then maybe do one to 3 sunflowers popping out of the colored confetti

I second green apples, I've even seen apples spray painted with really glossy bold colors and just lined up down the table. Very pop art minimalist.
I am going with candle lanterns surrounded with rose petals (cheap on fiftyflowers.com) with some scattered votives on the table

Fall mums in various inexpensive wicker baskets.
Or what about groupings of black and white pictures in colorful frames and different sizes. You could do pictures of places that you and the hubs find near and dear to your heart. Or special memories: proposal spot-first date- favorite restaurants-favorite vacations-inside jokes-or any other major events Or your engagement pictures always work too.
How about colorful vases with berry branches. Think bittersweet berries (I've heard they're toxic if ingested) or curly willow branches.
I agree with Ottawabride2011, Martha has "50 Best Centerpieces" article that is jam packed with incredible ideas. We're doing the bare branch idea from that article. Good luck!
I am also in LOVE with centerpiece using fruit and/or fruit slices! Buying the fruit in bulk at Costco, Winco, or Walmart was helpful in saving money, and it also creates a unique, bold look for your wedding! here is a How-To guide on making these centerpieces, and a picture of my wedding centerpiece! Create the honeymoon of your dreams.
Given budget overruns, we are wondering about colorful and simple alternatives to flowers. Our tables are rectangular 6 footers, to be arranged in a U-shape, 6 guests per table. We'd like two centers per table.
Any ideas?
