My mom and friend are throwing a shower, but I'm being consulted on food. I don't really want to do sandwiches. I'm not a huge fan. I don't really want to serve them to guests. They're just not my thing.

We're trying to come up with alternatives. So far we're at lasagna. Which is messy. And the house we're having the shower in has white carpet so we don't really want to go that route either.

Any other suggestions for something more substantial? We're doing hors d'oeuvres and desserts, but what else can we serve?

Various types of salad?  You could have a large variety of toppings and dressings so guests can make up their own salad.  Maybe with white pizza on the side (if you don't want the red sauce).  Crockpot mac and cheese is also yummy and would go well with a salad.

how about mini quiches? We did this for my nieces baby shower and everyone loved them. We used oversized muffin tins to bake them in, and they were the perfect size. We had a brunch type shower and had a fresh fruit salad with it, and a veggie crudite and it was fine.

I have two go to sandwich-esque recipes that I always make at showers but they're definitely more appetizer like.  Lasagne sounds great.

One's a pilsbury crescent roll laid out flat and baked, then mix half a container with cream chese with ranch dressing, then dice up veggies (carrot, celery, brocolli, peppers, or whatever you like), and layer them on top.

The other is a pinwheel.  4 flour tortillas, package of cream cheese, a 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar, and a half cup of monterery jack, and 1 cup sliced up ham with a tablespoon (or to taste) of pepper relish.  Then spead, roll up and bake for about 7 minutes at 375.

@2ndtime:  Love it!! Kabobs wouldn't have crossed my mind

    @SandyThePoet:  I like this too!

@subbywife11:  White pizza and mac and cheese with salad - you're my kind of girl, lol.

@missrobots:  We're doing an afternoon shin-dig but that stuff can always be transferred!

    Awesome ideas! Anyone else?

Hmm.. And you just don't like sandwich-y sandwiches or any type of bread-with-filling type of thing?

    My favorites are:

    • mini pitas stuffed with doner kebab and tzatziki (or anything else you like with your pita)
    • meat+vegetables wrapped in rice pancake - variation on spring roll
    • mini meat pies (pork pies, quiches, pierogi...)
    • crostini, open faced sandwiches, canapes with vegetables in place of bread...
    • pigs in blankets, devils on horseback (dried prunes wrapped with bacon and baked till crispy), blinis with different toppings (traditional being sourcream and caviar or smoked salmon)

    HTH :)

Pinwheels! We are also having homemade French bread and cupcakes, pasta salad, weinies in the crockpot, fruit and dip, chips and salsa, and of course shower punch and mimosas! I definitely think pinwheels are a fabulous alternative to sandwhiches though!

My suggestion would be to pick a "theme" with the food, like italian, comfort food, mexican, etc. to help you narrow down your menu a little bit.

    Here are some ideas:

Italian:  Spinach and Artichoke Baked Ziti, Ceasar Salad, Creamy Tomato Soup Shooters, Meatball Skewers

Comfort Food: Meatloaf Sliders, Cole Slaw, Bacon and Scallion Corn Bread, Mini Mac and Cheese Bites (bake in mini muffin tin)

Mexican: Fajita Bar, Taco Salad, Mexican Rice, Guacamole
