I’m having a beach wedding. For some reason my mom thinks this means “informal and plain.” Yes, it’s my second wedding and it will be small (50 ppl or less). Does that mean I HAVE to wear a plain, chiffon or short dress???
I have tried on chiffon dresses. I have yet to find one that really flatters me. I like lace. I like small trains. I like fitted sheath dresses! I found a dress at David’s that I really liked. Then I came across Casablanca 1975 and i MUST have it!!! The shape, the back, the lace, the straps….it seems perfect for what i had in my mind. I showed it to my mom and her response was: “Maybe you should change your venue so you can wear one of these formal dresses you love so much. They just aren’t right for the beach. I know everyone will be looking at you but you would look silly wearing something so fancy when he’s in a linen suit. You chose a destination wedding but you don’t seem to like destination gowns. They’re too simple for your taste.”
My feelings were actually hurt. I wanted her to love the dress. She likes something like this:
It’s gorgeous and I would definately try it on, but 1975 is going to haunt me.
So, am i being ridiculous? Will i look silly in a dress like 1975?

@DiamondMom: Nope, not at all. I don’t even need to look up 1975 since that beauty is already ingrained in my brain. I think it’s perfect for a beach wedding. Rock on!

@DiamondMom: wear the dress of your dreams! dont listen to your mom. and so what its your second time around ; ) that does not make it any less special it acually makes it more special.

I can understand where she’s coming from, beach weddings do have a more laid back vibe than church/ballroom types. She’s probably concerned about a train in all that sand.
I saw a pic of a bride in a satin ballgown on the beach. It did catch me off guard, I wouldn’t have done it. But she apparently loved it so good for her.
If you love the dress and will be comfortable and happy in it, go for it.

1975 would be just as lovely on the beach as any DW gown they make and sell. Mom is crazy.

YOUR wedding ! And that 1975 dress is amazing ! I think it would look fabulous on the beach !

@DiamondMom: I think your pick is perfect for the beach! If anything, the dress your mom is suggesting is almost on the fancier side. 1975 is so sleek! Go for it! 🙂

@DiamondMom: Nope! It’s your wedding. Wear the dress YOU want. Ours isn’t a beach wedding but it’s outdoors in Florida on the bayside so it still has somewhat of a “beachy” feel and we are having 52 guets. My dress is the Maggie Sottero Divina. It’s perfect and exactly what I wanted. I also had people ask me why I picked this “fancy” of a dress for an outdoor Florida wedding. My response? Because I loved it and it’s what I wanted. lol. I’ve also seen the Divina dress wore at a beach wedding. Do what YOU want & how YOU want to feel on your wedding day!!

It is truly impossible for you to be overdressed, regardless of venue. It’s your wedding day!

I say eff the whole out dated notion of matching dress to venue! This is your BIG DAY! Wear what you love! Or you’ll regret it forever!

I think the dress you like and your mom’s pick are pretty similar. I do like your mom’s better. That being said, it’s your wedding so wear what you love!

first of all, Casablanca 1975 IS perfect for the beach. Is your mom paying for your dress? I’m not understanding why her opinion matters so much.

I’m having a beach wedding and the reason why I’m not wearing lace is because it’s too heavy. Between the two Casablanca dresses, I like 1975 for the beach better. Looks a little lighter. Please remind your mom it is your wedding 🙂
