@Jessie: This is actually a news report on nightly news right now on ABC! I thought of you right away. They said if you don't know what Twilight is you may have lost all chances of being hip. Guess I'm not hip! haha

@DaisyBride: I didn't know that about True Blood. I don't have HBO so I guess that is another reason why I have no clue what it is!

Yeah. I am not interested either. Love you guys' answers! For some reason, LOTR is believable to me but twilight is just too farfetched!

I read them because I work with a bunch of teenagers and they were reading them... I wanted to know what they were reading.

The story lines, while incredibly predictable, were relatively amusing, IMO, but I couldn't agree more - the writing was blah, the characters lacked depth and were incredibly static; you're not missing much in the last two books. It's like, "oh. well. that was a letdown." at the end.

Not to mention, after reading them, all my teens thought that they epitomized what a relationship ought to look like, complete with stalking, obsession, parental deception, general lustiness, all take and no give, etc. We had some major damage control to deal with afterwards. They're like porn for young women with no relationship experience - reating unrealistic expectations and idealizations!

I'm not into it. I don't do "fantasy", no matter what it is or how "hot" the guys are. I'm not into teenagers or guys playing them, really. They get portrayed young, so that's how i see them, and then i'm not into them at all.

Now, historical fiction? i'm all over it =-]. I have no desire to read the series or watch the movie though.

A friend loaned me the first book, but I haven't started reading it.  It's just collecting dust on the shelf.  Not sure if I don't want to get sucked in or what - but have zero desire to start.  Nice to see I'm not alone! :)

Sign me up on the "not-hip" list. I have no interest in it. I am older and I was a huge Anne Rice fan in college. I used to stay up all night reading her books. Can't get into the Twilight thing.

The Twilight series was dead to me as soon as I heard that the vampires sparkle. They're poorly written, light, entertaining reads, but there are so many better books out there! Even in the supernatural genre there are TONS of vampire, vampire v. werewolf books.

@bvig - as someone who resisted both HP and Twilight, I can vouch and say Twilight is NO HARRY POTTER!  Twilight is more cheesy, obsessive romance (sorry gals that like it, I just really think it is).  The Twilight books aren't the worst thing I've read by far, but they certainly don't live up to the hype.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get the Robert Pattinson thing!

I swore up and down that I would hate it until I actually read the books and now I'm hopelessly obsessed. Embarassed But I definitely understand the arguments against it - I can definitely see how people this it's ridiculous, creepy, etc.

I work at a bookstore. I have 45 year old women telling me 10x a day that I should read them because "they're wonderful!"... I have an English degree. And I work a bookstore. What part of "I READ REAL BOOKS" do you not understand?

Seriously, it's so frustrating, and I can't even TELL THEM that they need to grow up and read adult books.

Also, I think people who are like "you haven't read them? You are totally not cool" are absolutely and totally lame. I have better things to do (like be on WB) than to read terrible teen romance.
