Am I the only person who isn't looking forward to the SATC movie?

So I loved the show. Loved it.

But I thought that the first movie was SO AWFUL. Every time I think about it, I get angry. Allow me to rant for a minute, and if you've never seen the movie, I warn you that there are spoilers below. So anyway:

    1. I hated how Carrie blamed Miranda for Big calling off the wedding. She should've known better to let anything get in the way of their friendship.
    2. I hated how they used Jennifer Hudson's character. It was such a demeaning, stereotypical character in my opinion. I half expected her to say that she didn't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies. She was basically a nursemaid out of an old black and white movie, hired to clean up after the mess that was Carrie's life. And then, at the end, she quit her life in New York to get married, because marriage was really her only goal in life.
    3. The whole "labels and love" thing just left a bad taste in my mouth. The fashion was one of the good parts of the movie, I admit, but the fashion and label aspect of the movie basically replaced any humanity the movie could've had.
    4. The scene where the women gave Samantha a hard time for gaining weight was just ugly and offensive. Period.

The trailer for SATC 2 looks even worse. Over-the top costumes, an exotic setting, silly one-liner gags, and no heart.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I also disliked the first movie. Mostly because I felt it deviated from their characters on the show, and kind of lost what I loved about the show. And then I saw the trailer for the second movie, and it looks even worse. I'll probably see it, but I almost wish they hadn't made any. The show in and of itself was so much better.

Yeah, I know my mom will make me go to see the second movie with her, and I am curious about it, but I know I'm going to leave angry.

    @danadelphia: I fully agree!!!

I loved the TV show but the first movie was horrific. My girlfriends dragged me to see it opening night even though I knew it was going to be nothing like the TV show. It was awful: the comedy, the outfits, the characters... ugh!

The second movie looks too ridiculous for words.

@danadelphia - same here. I saw the first one with my FSIL and two of her friends, and they all loved it. They were crying at the end. They asked me what I thought and I was like, "er, I really prefer the TV show... I didn't really like the movie." and they couldn't believe it.

I agree about Jennifer Hudson's character by the way. How insulting to insinuate that as soon as her old boyfriend realized he loved her, she'd ditch everything to do with her independent life and go be a wife.

i agree with you! but i'll be seeing it anyway, of course. They seemed to suck the humanity out of the series, you're right. How terrible is it that my favorite part of that movie was charlotte's horrible scene? Poop humor is funny but not in SATC! If the crowds are going to dress up, wear their heels and make a girls night out of seeing the SATC movie, please write with some wit and intelligence, and leave the rest of the junk out. Heck, i'd take a well crafted 30min-hour long show rather than a bad, bad movie. Even at 10 bucks.

Does anyone else hate how much they praise Carrie like she's a goddess and all the other actresses play such embarrassing scenes in the first movie?

Charlotte craps herself while Carrie creates the crap in her life and then can't figure out where she went wrong.

Thank you danadelphia!!! I felt so sad that the two hours and $9 I spent watching the first movie were two hours of my life and $9 I would never get back. I agree with you on all points. The thing about her blaming Miranda just completely made me want to vomit--what a horrible, nonsensical bunch of misogynist bull. Oh, so your fiance's a douchebag, so you're going to blame it on your best girlfriend instead of him? Because saying "you're crazy to get married" is an automatic excuse for someone jilting someone at the altar? How the heck does that make ANY sense? I also could NOT get over the Jennifer Hudson role, and I could not get over the fact that somehow Big typing out a bunch of love letters proved that he was making an effort. Big freaking deal. He humiliates her and is a general sleaze and then typing some letters that someone else wrote is supposed to prove how much he really truly loves her? Give me a break. I was completely hunched down with my head in my hands by the end of the movie.

Sorry that movie just made me REALLY angry. I thought it was SO anti-woman. I can't believe they're making another one, it looks just awful.

The intense exotification of the middle east in the trailer made me both laugh and gag.  The movie looks cheesy as hell.  I didn't see the first one, and I DEFINITELY won't be seeing this one.

I totally forgot about all the letters that Big copied and sent to Carrie. Eyeroll.

It WAS very anti-woman. It's like all four women were judging themselves and each other on their romantic relationships instead of their accomplishments.

YIKES!! I guess I am the only one here that really loved the tv episodes and loved the first movie as well.  I don't think any of them lost their character from the series, I felt like they all stayed true to themselves.

I'm looking forward to the sequel, not because it actually looks good, but I just love Sex in the City period.

Sorry you guys were dissappointed in the first movie.

I didn't like the first movie either, and agree with all of your points, danadelphia! But most of all I didn't like the movie because of Carrie's relationship with Big. BIG IS THE WORST! I am a huge fan of the series, but even by the end of that, I was so over the "Big acts like an asshole and treats Carrie horribly, then apologizes way later, then she forgives him" sequence of events. The movie just topped that all off--he did something HORRIBLE which she forgave him for, AGAIN. And now the new movie looks like it's throwing in another totally contrived reason to break them up and get back together. I don't even think I'll go see it.

I too loved the show.  I saw the first movie...didn't love it..but didn't hate all of it.  I'm not rushing to see the second.  C'mon...you are in the Middle freakin' East and Carrie bumps into Aiden?  seriously? I'll wait to catch it on DVD...redbox ($1 dvd rentals).

I agree with you on a lot of what you're saying...

Then again there were some great parts like when Carrie gets her heart broken and she cries and cries and her friends are there for her... awwww love that part. I can definately relate to that. The fashion in my opinion was blah... except for the wonderful manolos! I really hated how much crap they talked about la.. but they do that in the show too.

However I'm still going to go watch the 2nd one!

I felt like Big's character was nothing like his on the series. The whole calling off the wedding thing was very contrived to me, you know, just to have a movie plot about broken hearts.

I'll go see the second movie because I can't help myself but yeah, the fact half the movie takes place in the middle east when the show is a LOVE LETTER TO NEW YORK, bothers me..

SATC movie? Oh, do you mean Bridget Jones II? Looks like the same movie to me ;) (Exotic locale, picking between the two guys she picked between last movie, the beating of a dead horse...) Sigh. I'll probably still see it though.

I just thought about the location after reading the rest of this thread - all of those outfits and behaviors wouldn't fly in Dubai - anybody notice all the bare skin and drinking on camels? No way ladies !

I think all the stories were wrapped with the end of the series. I thought the first movie was okay and I watched it mainy for the clothing - but this one just seems ridiculous - like what else could they possibly cover? However I will probaby see it (on video in 6 mos).

@Melissabegins You're right. None of that would fly in Dubai - which is why they banned filming there. I actually was there a few years ago and I felt very uncomfortable in clothing I would think nothing about in the states.

I also hated the 1st movie. And it was totally disappointing b/c I LOVED the show. I thought they went too far with Carrie and Big and it was way too campy. The show ended their relationship on a high note, the drama should have been shifted somewhere else.

I guess I'm in the minority but I found the 1st movie to be pretty entertaining. I had never been a huge fan of the show but had seen most of the episodes (the censored versions on TBS). I just don't really relate enough to any of them so both the show and the movie felt like fantasies to me. A freelance writer living in New York that can afford $40k worth of shoes living in a gorgeous apartment? Hmm. The movie was cheesy as hell but that was just another fantasy to me so it didn't bother me much.

As much as I hate the Mr Big plotline, I think Carrie was actually played up to be so, SO hyperdramatic in the movie. Not to defend him but it's not like Mr Big told all of NY that he wasn't going to marry her on a billboard or something. He got cold feet, they should have talked it through. If you've been with someone for that long, bad history or not, seems to me you don't just fly off to Mexico and never answer your phone ever. And when everyone urges Miranda to forgive Steve for cheating?? That really got my goat. "He's such a nice guy!" So stupid. He cheated. Work it out, sure, but don't tell her she needs to forgive him because he's SOOO nice otherwise. Gag.

THANK YOU! I also loved the show but hated the first movie. Everyone I know who saw the first one LOVED it, so I've either had to stay quiet or risk starting an intense debate, lol.

And my old grad school buddies would have a field day discussing the feminist/postcolonial issues that the sequel's trailer dregs up. Yesh.

I LOVE it all!  You can't take things too seriously-- I think the whole franchise is really entertaining, and that's it.  I don't watch it for clever character development or amazing screenwriting.  Of course it's all kinda cheesy... you just gotta take it for what it is.

Such a relief! LOVED the show. HATED the first movie. (Will probably still see the second movie, even knowing that it's sure to be even worse than the first. Don't judge!)

I'm with kwago. The other ladies were horrible to Miranda, blamed her for Steve cheating and harshly judged her for not getting over it right away. Meanwhile, Carrie has a nervous breakdown about Big's temporary cold feet and they had to spoon feed her oatmeal so she wouldn't starve herself. And Miranda was supposed to be the one overreacting?

Also, as much as people hated the end of Samantha's storyline in the series, I didn't think Smith deserved to get the boot. He was so loyal and dedicated.  But in the end, that other guy was really, really naked, so what could Samantha do?

I never really saw the show and I saw the first movie and hated it!  I thought it was pretty lame.  And am the only one that thought the bird head on Carrie's head was ridiculous??  I guess maybe I'm a simple girl who wears jeans, tank tops and flip flops, but I thought some of the clothes on the first move were just bad.  Like Samantha's animal print pants with the purple top when they comment on her weight??

I will probably see SATC 2 but not in the theater.  I will not pay money for it and will wait til I can get it on Netflix.

I watched maybe one or two episodes of the show at most and honestly could not understand what the attraction was. So the movies don't interest me at all but you can't escape the advertising. I don't think the actresses are all that either, having seen them in other non-related productions.

Loved the show for its escapism and humor.  My life will never be like that, but it's fun to watch on tv.  I hated the 1st movie for trying to be too serious and melodramatic and for ignoring the humor and escapism of the series (and for all the reasons danadelphia mentioned).  If this review of the 2nd one is accurate, it sounds even worse (but the review's pretty darn entertaining, at least if you disliked the 1st movie and don't think you'll like the 2nd): http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/burkas-and-birkins/Content?oid=4132715

Well, I LOVED the show and LOVED the first movie, but I'd give the 2nd movie 2.5 stars out of 5...it just wasn't that good.  It wasn't funny really like the show, and even the 1st movie had more funny parts.  Kinda disappointed, and now hearing there might be #3.
