dc is great because there are so many free things to do, plus there are a lot of really great restaurants. if you come in march, you might be here for cherry blossom festival, which is beautiful. in that case however, hotels will be a lot more expensive and the city gets crowded (it's usually at the end of march/beginning of april).
COME TO NYC!!!! We loooove Canadians! <3
Go to the Central Park Zoo and traverse the city from the Park. Check out the Time Warner building, grab lunch at somewhere amazing (bf works as a chef so I'm biased so won't name restaurants) catch a broadway show, do some shopping in Chinatown then head over to Little Italy for dinner! See Brooklyn and the amazing aquarium and botanical gardens, check out Lady Liberty and South Street Seaport, do some shopping in Tribeca...go to the museums!!
Sorry - I LOVE NY!
I voted DC because of the cherry blossoms. NYC is still kinda gross that time of year.
@LGenz: Enh, we're from Ontario. It's equally as gross here in March. :-D
@kitzy: Some of my husband's family went to DC a few months ago, and it comes highly recommended. I've never heard of this cherry blossom festival! We'll be there mid-March.
@luckyprincess: You love NY? I couldn't tell! Hahaha! My only concern is it's really expensive, but then again I don't know how expensive the other two places are.
I'm a bit biased because I live in DC, but the weather will be warmer and there are lots of free things (zoos, museums, etc...); as well as romantic things to do like dinner cruises down the river, cute B&Bs/hotels, etc... It's a quick trip to Alexandria; and you can even get to NYC easily and inexpensively ($20 for a 4.5 hr bus ride). Good luck!
@luckyprincess: haha I'm not convinced all the snow currently on the ground will have melted by March.
@aruka11: I do like this talk of warmer weather and free stuff. . .I hate winter. I know March is spring, but let's be honest, often it still snows in March up here.
here's a thread someone else started today with links to other threads bees have posted asking for things to do in dc.
Ugh - I do have to concur that there miiiigghht be about 3 feet of snow on the sidewalks waiting to melt - but I mean, c'mon - it's NYC!! :P
@kitzy: Thanks that's helpful! Oh my god, there is a recommendation for a bar with the 'most beers in one place'. I may be leaning towards DC now!!
@luckyprincess: Meh, I lived in London, Ontario for 7 years. I gets about as much snow as Buffalo. I can handle it!
@Brianalaura:actually that bar closed a couple of weeks ago! supposedly they're reopening under a new name, but i'm not sure if they've done so yet.
eta: nevermind...it reopened as the bier baron. they're supposed to have the same beer list.
@kitzy: Phew, I was really sad for a second. We love beer!
I vote for DC, since I live here, and the weather will be a bit nicer than either NY or Boston in mid-march. Boston is a great city to visit, but you really want to be able to walk around and it can be kinda miserable in cold weather.
Obviously I would say DC, hahaha. It is absolutely gorgeous around that time of year and you'll get to see the Cherry Blossom Festival, luck you!
@LaurenK0105: Thanks! I think we're really leaning towards going there now.
@luckyprincess: The warmer-ish weather is definitely swaying me! I think we'll try to do a New York vacay in the summer sometime. My husband's never been.
I'm not American, but I travel a lot. I might be the only one ever to say this, but I really wasn't at all impressed with New York. My recommendation isn't on your list - Chicago rocks my socks, I have been there a few times and will never get bored of it.
Then again, I haven't been to DC or Boston yet either, so I'm not being completely objective about your poll. Sorry.
@deliciousappleblue: Hmmm, I hadn't considered Chicago. We'll have to do that one another time!
I voted DC, because that's where FI proposed! Also, we didn't pay for anything but food and hotel there, we spent the whole time going to museums and monuments, and it was awesome.
Another vote for DC because I live here (well NoVA) but there are SO many free things to do and in March you might just get lucky with some warm weather. I can guarantee you the minimal snowfall weve had (and will have) this year will be melted by that time. When in March are you coming? The cherry blossom festival will begin March 26 but the trees will start to bloom earlier than that so you will probably get to see them. Also how long are you planning to go for? http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/
@PitBulLover: We'll come and go before the 26th. It will probably be between the 14th-19th area. Ah well!
@Brianalaura: It's amazing, promise. Even just Shedd's Aquarium is worth the whole trip.
Haha, I'm a real new yorker (born here!) and I absolutely love it here, but I still vote DC since I don't want you to see our city when it's covered in dirty snow and slush. Come here later in the spring or summer or fall. :)
If we're talking March - DC hands down. The weather will be much nicer and its a great city to visit. See Boston or NY in the summer.
I voted DC because I love it here !
BUT I also love NYC, haha, and really want to go to Boston someday (hopefully someday soon).
I feel like DC is a lot less intimidating that NYC. There's a TON to do here, but it's still small enough that you don't need to feel overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do. Also, I feel like there's TONS of free/inexpensive stuff to do in DC, whereas most of the touristy stuff in NYC, in my experience, is expensive! So you get a lot more for your money in DC, IMO.
Thanks everyone for your replies!
I'm definitely down for free stuff. We aren't exactly rolling in the dough right now. Man, I am getting excited! I've totally caught a travel bug since my trip to England in October.
Man, we need to plan a mid-march meetup, so you out of vacationers can join us, haha. We had like 35 bees at our last meetup back in the fall!
If you are going over St Paddy's Day (march 17) I would say go to Boston. But if it's later in the month go to DC for the cherry blossom fest. I LOVE NY, but it's still gross that time of year, but if you really want, you could take the $20 China town bus from DC to NY.
I would say DC for the weather. Boston is nice but I wouldn't recommend anyone visiting here in March.
@daydreamwanderer: We should try to do a mid March meet up! That would be a lot of fun!!

My husband and I are thinking of going on a short road trip vacation in March. The three options we're looking at are New York City, Boston and Washington DC. I have been to NYC once but it was in grade 8, so I'd be happy to go there again. Any tips on what to choose? How about best places to go in these cities (food, touristy sites, hotels or anything else), or places to avoid?
Overall they are not that far apart travel wise for us (only +/- 1 hour) so I don't care about that part.
Help me out ladies!! :-)
