wow, I wouldn't go back to that doctor again! For your height that weight doesn't seem at all overweight. You should have told her to go F@#$ herself.
That's just horrible! I'm 5"10 and weigh a lot more than 150! That's a great weight for your height. What did you say when she said that? I would have been hurt too. Just remember that SHE is the nutty one...
I know that 150 is definately a healthy weight for 5'10"..sorry you had to hear her crap! Can you try to get a recommendation from somebody for the next visit?
She should shut the hell up. Seriously. Find a different doctor. Btw, you DO NOT need to lose weight!
Find a different doctor. That's totally inappropriate and uncalled for. Any BMI calculator/chart will tell you that height/weight is perfectly healthy.
BTW, I'm 5'8", 150 lbs, size 8.
Oh yeah I will never be going back...
I talked to my friend about it today because I've been feeling pretty crappy about it ever sense and she said and I quote "uh yeah, that lady is nuts. You should have asked me!" Well I did asked her and she said the female dr. with the office by the hospital. She failed to mention there were 3 different female dr's by the hospital!
I didn't really say anything when she said that.. I was just kind of stunned that she was being so matter of fact about the whole thing. I was just like, uh okay?
My hubby told me to let it roll off my shoulder but the part that bothers me is that she could be possibly telling these kinds of things to young girls who have enough complexes! I mean geeze... what am I supposed to weigh 100 lbs?
For your height you're a great weight!
I personally would find a new doctor and NEVER go back to this one. Ever.
That just sounds wrong. That's a BMI of 21.5....a very healthy weight. The Centers for Disease Control consider a healthy range for your height to be between 129 and 174...so you are in the lower half for that. I have no idea what she must have been thinking.
She told me my bmi was 25.5... It sounded off to me too. Maybe she just got confused :/
My wii told me yesterday my BMI was 22. something.
@Jamie: Maybe she accidentally put it in as 5'1?? but still, she should have been able to look at you and know you weren't overweight. Bizarre.
Maybe she wrote something down wrong....
I'm no pro, but here's a link to the BMI calculator I used:
http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/english_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.html
Wow! That is crazy! You sound perfectly healthy to me. I would definately go to a different doctor. I am sorry that she made you feel bad (I know I would feel the same way too).
The whole thing was a little weird. She was old... I'd say near 60 so maybe she is just a little senile?
Either way if the topic of gynecologists ever comes up with anyone I know in the area (which doesn't come up often) I will definitely be telling them to avoid that lady like the plague!
Wow - if you're overweight then I must be obese (and I'm certainly not that)! Never go back to that doctor again and get some recommendations for a new one. I would even consider calling her practice and make a complaint, letting them know you'll be switching doctors because of it. If she is making comments like this to other patients, maybe someone calling and letting the practice know the result of her comments will change things for others.
I'm so sorry you had to hear that from her! Not only is that unprofessional, it's absolutely untrue- you are at a healthy weight for your height, and you know you have good habits.
That is crazy. Sadly I had a very similar experience a few years ago. I have been the same size for the last 10 years, am very active (long-distance runner), and have a very healthy obession with vegetables. The doctor did not ask me about any of those things. Instead she told me that my BMI catagorized me as almost overweight and that I should start being tested for diabetes. I sat in shock for a few minutes, then went to the gym for 3 hours. By the next day I came to my senses and called the office and filed a compliant.
I am all about having open discussion re:healthy weight, but I also believe that people should have some tact.
oh god, I'm 150 and 5'4. I guess she'd call me obese!!!!!! So sorry you had to go through that.
I don't think that's right--you're 5'10" (i'm 5'11") and 150 pounds would NOT give you a BMI of 25.5 Even when i was 170-175 pounds, my BMI was NOT 25.5.
Now, if you weren't in the healthy range (which i believe, for 5'10" is somewhere around 140-180 pounds), then i'd think "yeah she was not tactful about it, but she has a point" unfortunately...but uh, seeing as how you are on the lower end of the healthy range, why she even brought it up completely confuses me. It really does sound like her numbers got messed up, but even so, I doubt you look like the michelin man to the point bringing it up is necessary.
I think she should retire. If its any consolation I've seen your pictures from other post and you are perfectly fine.
That's bulls#*t! I'm 5'6" and weigh just under you! I'm no where near over weight! My doctor asked me yesterday if I had lost weight...um no but thanks! Please do not listen to that crazy doctor! As long as you work out and fit into the clothes you want, size 8 is small, then the number on the scale shouldn't matter!
What is she smoking? According to your height and weight, your BMI is in a totally healthy range. Honestly, you sound like you're a very healthy, fit and active woman. Please, please, please don't take her words to heart. Just curse her out in your head and look for a new gyno.
And an fyi, not all doctors are good doctors. I was a gymnast for many years and my parents always insisted I go to Asian doctors (which is kind of racist but I didn't have much of a choice back then). My general physician liked to mention each and every single time I visited him that gymnastics is the most dangerous sport in the world and that he knew a young gymnast that was paralyzed from an gymnastics accident. Gee, thanks! I kind of just rolled my eyes and told him that I'll continue doing gymnastics for as long as I want regardless of what he thinks. Eventually I told my parents that I was sick of his crap and needed a new doctor.
Umm, wow! I would find out who her boss is and complain via a letter. She's giving out unsafe medical advice.
I would definitely find a new doctor! I mean, it's good for a doctor to discuss your weight with you if you have questions or they're starting to get concerned, but you're at a very healthy weight for your height. And she absolutely calculated your BMI wrong. New doc, ASAP.
I agree with Miss Chapstick, you should report that sort of behavior. At best it is a math error and some canned line so she could cover her bases, which is still unacceptable.
I agree that the OP definitely does not sound overweight, and that it's likely the doctor made a mistake in her calculation. I also think that she didn't take into account that muscle weighs more than fat. I also agree that the comment was stupid in light of all of this.
But witchy? Unprofessional? I'm surprised at some of the reactions to the idea that a provider would tell a patient that she may be at higher risk of diabetes due to her weight. Being overweight doesn't mean that you're obese--they're not the same thing. Yet being overweight does put you at risk for certain health problems, just like being underweight does.
I've been underweight all my life, and it never occured to me to judge my providers for letting me know sometimes that they are keeping an eye on my weight! Granted, they monitor my weight in the context of my lifestyle as a whole, so they know I don't have an eating disorder. Unless they began to insinuate that this is the case when it's not, or scold me in some way because of my weight, they're just doing their job by letting me know that I would be healthier if I gained some weight.
I'm not saying this to provoke anything, I'm just curious about those reactions because I'm a nurse, and I'm not sure how a health care provider should broach the topic if it's taken this way.
I found out today that she is in a practice with another male gynecologist... I will call and tell her that she should probably double check her numbers before she starts recommending a diet and weight loss for someone who is NOT overweight.
Thanks yall' made me feel better. For a minute there I actually started to believe her :/
I think she must've gotten her numbers mixed up . . . I just looked up an online BMI calculator and a height/weight combo of 5'10" and 175 pounds gives a BMI of 25.1, whereas at 150lbs, BMI is 21.5. That's an incredible difference!
Just a few questions though . . .
When is the last time you weighed yourself? For me, the last time I weighed myself I weighed 135.4 pounds (I am 5'8"). When I went in to the see the doc a couple weeks ago, I weighed in at 129.8 pounds (with my clothes on, too). I didn't even notice a difference - I just thought I needed to wash my jeans to shrink them back up lol! You would be surprised at how much of a difference a few pounds can make when you consider the amount of weight as an overall percentage of your body weight, i.e., for me, I lost 5.4 pounds, which is approximately 4-5% of my body weight. When viewed as a whole, 5 pounds takes on a whole new light.
Did you actually see the height/weight measurements when they were taken and/or recorded in your chart? Maybe your height was rounded down a little and maybe your weight was up a little more than you're used to? And by weighing a little more, many many things can further affect your weight, i.e., how much water weight you are holding, if your shoes are on (and clothes, too), whether or not you have gone to the bathroom, whether or not you have recently eaten, etc. I don't mean to imply that these things can account for a 25 pound difference, but they can definitely account for a few pounds, and if you have gained a little bit of weight, that might help to explain the calculation . . .
For your health, I would want to know how she got those numbers - did you ask her? If her numbers are more accurate than yours, even though it may be difficult, I would want to know so that I could start making changes to reduce my risk for weight-related complications.
As an aside, muscle doesn't weigh more than fat (a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat), but muscle is much more dense than fat and takes up much less space, making people with higher lean muscle tissue and low body fat smaller, but actually heavier, than someone with a higher body fat and lower lean muscle tissue percentage.

So I had to go to my yearly "woman's visit" yesterday at a new gyno for the first time in my life. I had been seeing my first gyno since I was 15, a friend of the family she has always been around and even delivered my baby. I have since moved to North Carolina which pretty much makes seeing my original gyno impossible as she is in Texas.
Anyways, I was less than thrilled to have a complete stranger poking around in there but it must be done to get birth control. So I go in for the visit and they insist on doing a blood glucose test, ehhh okay whatever. Then they put me in the room and the dr. comes in and asks me to come into her office. An hour later we finally emerged... she asked me more questions then all the other doctors I've had in my life combined. After the pap she called me back into her office and proceeded to tell me that "I was overweight and should consider losing at least 10-15 pounds". Okay, I'm 5'10" and sit at round 150 lbs. I exercise at least 5 times a week (cardio and weight lifting) for an hour. I wear a size 8 dress....
I really don't see where this lady comes off... After asking me 282308923098 questions I had already told her that as a teenager I suffered from a pretty serious eating disorder that lasted from 16-19. Then she tells me to lose weight? I swear... people these days :/
Thanks for making me feel like a fat ass before my wedding... I really appreciate it!
