P.s. By the time we had gotten into that argument, he had already bought the ring.

Actually he gave it to his mum to hide. So his whole family was probably laughing at me without me knowing it!!!!

Haha, I totally made up these fantasy scenarios about how he was going to do it! But now that we're going on almost a year since the proposal, I can't remember any...

My best friend is currently waiting for hers... They already shopped for and bought it, so it's only a matter of time. I think her latest "how it's going to happen" dream involves him showing up at her door, holding out a kitten with the ring dangling from it's collar... Too funny!

LOL, my husband did a fake out! On a road trip to visit his family (a 9-hour drive that we usually make in one day), he suggested that we split the trip and spend a night in a fancy resort. I knew that he had bought a ring - so of course I "knew" he was going to propose at the resort. I got all dolled up for our dinner out... no ring... I brought out fancy new lingerie for after dinner... no ring... I did my hair and wore cute pjs for breakfast in bed... no ring. By the time we had packed ourselves back into the car, I had figured out that there was going to be no proposal on the trip after all. I was annoyed and pouty for a minute, but then decided to let it go and just enjoy the visit with his family. LOL - and then he surprised me with a romantic (SURPRISE!) proposal two days later. I definitely didn't see it coming, which was exactly what he wanted. He was disappointed that I knew he had bought a ring (it wasn't planned), so he had purposely tried to trick me so that he could still do a surprise proposal. Awww... :)

Last weekend we celebrated his birthday by going to Las Vegas, which led many people, including myself, to believe that this would finally be the weekend he proposed.  Shortly after checking in to the hotel, I stepped in to the bathroom to freshen up and heard an odd beeping sound.  After switching places, I realized his suitcase was already in the closet and noticed the safe....it was locked.  Heartrate skyrockets thinking, the ring is in there!

Saturday comes and goes, nothing; Sunday he plans out this romantic evening and I'm thinking this is it.  I even refrain from trying to break in to the safe while he's out getting out dinner for our hotel room picnic.  We eat and not 10 minutes later he is fast asleep.  Monday morning its an hour before check out and while I'm in the shower I just know that safe will be empty when I get out, and sure enough, it is.  Ugh!  I had the camera, GPS, music, and knew how much money we went with, so none of those things were locked up all weekend....must go snoop around the house a bit while he's out!

Ha yes!  We had been talking about getting engaged and we both knew it would happen sometime in 2008.  Easter weekend we went to Pittsburg Pa to pick up a new truck the boy had purchased off ebay.  While in Pittsburgh we stayed for a long weekend and hit some of the tourist spots.  On Easter Sunday morning while Pittsburgh was quiet and either sleeping or in church, we did the tourist thing and rode up the gorgeous Duquesne Incline to see the amazing views of the city.  We were in the box trolley car by ourselves enjoying the views.  The boy came over in front of me and got down on one knee.  I too had flutters and thought oh my gosh he's going to propose right now!  I was so excited.  Then he pulled out the camera from his pocket to take my picture while riding up the incline!  Completely anti-climatic and I was so embarrassed.  On our drive back to KY that afternoon, I fessed up and told him what I had thought.  Luckily he found my story funny and finally in October he popped the question in a scenario where I was completely surprised and caught off guard!!

Today the jewelers called my number by mistake to say the ring is ready to be picked up! Argg! I was like- hold on while I pass the phone to my boyfriend...Uug!  Is the magic gone???  Later we went out and I said "So, uh, is there any place you need to stop before we go home?" and he said no!  Guess it's not going to be a 4th of July fireworks kind of proposal. That would have been pretty cool.

Ladies - these crack me up! It's so nice to know I'm not the only suffering from the temporary insanity known as engagement brain!! Woohoo! I've been so good about not hinting or anything the past week - I know when he does it it's going to be so special. What's been helping me chill is to think "this will only happen once in my life.. do i want to ruin it by being a big nosy nelly?". Thanks for sharing all of your stories, they're helping me keep my calm in this very anxious waiting period!!

Aww I feel your pain...went through many of those moments myself...I knew he had the ring and there were so many times that it almost happened  ( I could always tell cuz my sister knew and then would act disappointed at said occasions when nothing happened)  I needed to act clueless about it the whole time too..(no one else besides him knew I knew he had already bought the ring)  Well long story short the pressure of me knowing was too much and he took me with him when he brought back the ring so I would know he didn't have it and so I would stop pressuring.  Eventually I forgot about it and just went back to normal happy relationship mode sans ring (but still having it in the back of my mind) Then on a Monday the least suspecting day ever, he finally proposes...though not on a bended knee or with a "will you marry me"...it was more of a certain I want to spend my life with you and bam I turn my head and ring!   So beware it will probably happen when you least suspect  it.  The other plus side was he ended up picking a much nicer ring than what we had initially picked and I am in love with it and him!

I've been expecting him to propose for the past year..A few weeks ago we were at a family wedding, and everyone in his family was getting ready for a family picture.  I was grouchy about something, and I was like, "I'm not a Franklin, I don't want to be in this pcture."  And then in from of EVERYONE his MOTHER was said, "well you will be soon, I heard he asked your fther for permission..."  Needless to say, everyone on both sides of the family now knows, and I am a little tired of waiting :)  I know when it happens it will be great, but I just wanna mary my man!

So I am back with my story.  Today I asked him sort of in a joking way when he'd propose.  He said soon. I said how and he said it's a surprise.  I then quoted the words from Chrisette Michelle's song and said "Be the man of my dreams and get down on your knees and ask me to marry youm my love."  He goes "on my knees"?  You would want that.  I was like well of course I think.. I don't know.  I have been engaged three times and every proposal was lackluster (I have never been married).  I cannot wait to see the way he asks.  We even looked at my favorite ring again and he was like yeah I really like that one a lot.  AARGGGG I cannot wait until this wait is over with!

we were going on a Valentine's Day trip to Disneyland, staying in a beautiful room overlooking the park at the Grand Californian. i definitely thought he was going to propose either at our favorite restaurant (which we went to the first night we were there) or during the fireworks.  once he didn't pop the question at either time, i totally relaxed and thought "well, i guess we're not getting engaged this trip..." and then, the next morning at about 9 am, he proposed to me at our brick in front of Disneyland just as we were going in for the day! I was completely flabbergasted and surprised! :-)

MY FI did a fake proposal to me.  We had picked out the ring and it is very similiar to my pearl diamond ring.  So one night I was sitting on the couch doing my makeup.  He walks in gets on one knee and holds up the pearl ring and says will you?  My heart sank because I thought it was the real deal. Then he started laughing and then I punched him in the arm, jokingly of course! :)   Then 3 weeks laughter he proposed at our family's mother's day celebration totally when I least expected it.  I know it is hard to wait but be paitent he has a plan!

Wow, this seems so strange that you would pick out a ring together without him proposing.  I mean, isn't the part when he said, "hey do you want to go pick out a engagement ring?"  kind of a proposal?

Anyway, mine proposed on top of a mountain at sunrise.  Very romantic.  We picked out a beautiful antique ring together later.

Charia - I guess it is. He just wanted me to have something I love on my finger for the rest of my life, so he wanted me to pick it out :) Suits me! The wait is agonizing but I'm going to be so freaking happy when I get that ring and I know it's official that I'll get to spend the rest of my life with the man I love! Lots of couples seem to pick out the ring together now, I know some women even pick them out themselves!

Well, I do not (yet) have any stories like this, but lately Mr.Rain has taken to teasing me about how he is going to propose. He knows how I do NOT want to be proposed to, and he keeps teasing that he'll do something like put the ring in the bottom of my icecream or make me solve a complicated puzzle to get to it. No offense to people whose proposals may have resembled either of those, but when it comes to me and the Mr. I just want him down on one knee with a ring in his hand and promise on his lips. And then he got down on one knee... and tied his shoe. : wedding waiting fake proposal the ring hope fake proposal Icon Biggrin

Oh I am a total engagement brain!

A little background - we picked out my ring over a year ago - but at the time knew he cant afford it so I was at ease... for awhile!

At christmas (our 5th year anniversary of being together was Dec 23rd) I thought that this had to be it... On the morning of Dec 23rd we get a call from his brother saying that he was proposing to his GF on Christmas Eve. #1 - Green with engagement envy and #2 - Now I know its not happening.

Then at Valentines Day he wanted to surprise me with a special day. I am very honest and we talk about everything so I said to him "I am sure it will be great - but I really don't want to get my hopes up to be disappointed" He says "YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED" - NO RING!!!!! He had no idea what I was referring too when I said that!!!!!!!

It is now July - He has ordered the ring and we have booked our venue for next year and yet no proposal!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every time we go out for a walk, for dinner, he comes home from work early, we do anything I think that this has to be it... but nope!

I have no idea when or how and its driving me crazy!

Im such a control freak - I hate this!

I agree with the the ladies saying it will happen when you least expect it!

My FH and I had talked about and knew that we would get engaged, and I knew it was happening soon but the day it happened I was SHOCKED! In my apartment, I was reading cosmo and eating wheaties (luckily, I had woken up at 5 for a presentation and was eating afterwards) and he suprised me and showed up! I had to work an hour later! It was madness, romantic, and a HUGE suprise :)

I am sure that it will be a wonderful suprise for you as well :)

First, I'd just like to say that I love this site and this forum thread.  I just stumbled across it last night and I'm already addicted.

It's comforting to know that I'm not the only engagement obsessed woman out there.  Reading all your stories is actually helping me understand how my bf thinks.

So here's a little funny story...

A little background:  been together 3 years in Nov. and currently living together (1+ years).

Last Dec. we took our first trip to Disneyworld (we're from CA).  We had fancy dinners planned, stayed in a lovely resort hotel...the works.  All my friends were telling me that this was it, so I was convinced as well.  We decided not to get each other Christmas presents because the trip was $6K and we were already broke from that.  We settled on just one "small" gift that we would pack and present on our trip.

So while we're packing, he mutters something about taking my gift on as a carry on because he didn't want to risk it getting lost.   Then at the airport he tells me that he's worried that what if he has to open his bag at the security checkpoint and I see my gift...on and on.  So of course, I'm thinking, this is it.

On Christmas Eve he hints that it's an expensive gift.  I give him crap that it was supposed to be a "small" gift.  He says it's small, but it was just expensive.  At this point, I'm reeling, but I'm sure I'm getting engaged.

Christmas morning in the hotel comes and we exchange gifts.  It's a lovely Ipod Touch (which I had been saying I wanted for quite some time).  Oh boy, I felt stupid.

Anyway, I learned not to build things up too much.  We're still happily together.  No ring yet, but we do talk about it.  He definitely wants it to be a surprise and he doesn't want me to even suspect.  So I've stopped pestering him about it.

    Thanks everyone!

Not with FI, but I had an ex who once gave me an empty ring box for Xmas. YES AN EMPTY RING BOX!?? He thought the box looked neat and I'd like it. We';d been together 3 years at that point. lol. I'm glad I dumped him and met FI.

I recommend that you try to stop thinking about it.  My fiance and I looked at rings together, and after that I was always wondering when it was going to happen, and was constantly predicting that it was going to happen.  And then when it did, I wasn't surprised at all!  I kind of ruined the moment for myself by constantly thinking about it.  Oh well, it's done... and we'll be married in 2 weeks from today, so I suppose that's all that matters!

Oh boy ... I'm not quite at this point yet - but I AM not looking forward to it! It's bad enough that last Friday, Loverboy calls me and says 'I'm picking you up from work and I have a surprise for you..." and his surprise? He finally cut his hair the way I've been telling him would look so good on him. Cute, right? Oy. Of course, this was right after we were talking about how there's platinum in every catalytic converter and he asked me if I would want an e-ring made out of that platinum (we're both really into cars) so he does keep raising my hopes a little more each day. But I'm not too concerned - it's just so.frustrating.when.he.does.those.things.

@alishaneva: pretty cool that you get a platinum ring because it's in a catalytic converter! and I was lmbo about the I have a surprise for you, I bet he's doing it to throw you off. He will have a series of these surprises so that when it's the ring you won't expect it.

My bf and I have been together for four years and he bought the ring about two weeks ago, so I am totally in suspense. I know when he does propose, he wont be doing anything fancy, but everytime he says something sweet or does anything remotely out of the ordinary my heart races and I get all giddy. It really is ridiculous how impatient I am....

urgh! it's all i think about lately ladies! despite having never formally discussed it, i have had at least two scare moments, but the freakiest one ironically happened when i was totally not ready. we were dating for just over a year (we met the weekend after Thanksgiving) and I had decided to spend Christmas with his family. we all converged at his grandparent's house, exchanged gifts, enjoyed a fun evening together. the two of us and his parents were staying at his aunt and uncle's place, and we end up getting back about 10PM. we're getting ready for bed, and as I'm sitting on my bed taking off my shoes, he walks over to me with something behind his back. needless to say, my heart is POUNDING and i'm totally freaking out! he brings a box around in front of him and says "I got you a little something else". turns out it was a really cute silver bracelet, not a ring. I breathed a sigh of relief at that moment, but what i wouldn't kill to have it happen again now! arrrgh!!!

MissLeah    October 22, 2010   North of Boston, MA

My BF and I have been together for just over 5 years. We knew that we'd wait until we'd both graduated from college, which brought us to May '08. Then he says that he wants to live together before we get engaged, which brought us out to August '08. Then he says he wants all of his friends to be there, so I'm thinking Boston Marathon in April '09. Now it's "I want to wait unti we're stable." I know he means financially, so we can pay for our wedding ourselves without going into debt, but COME ON!

I've had so many This Is It moments, I can barely count them. There was, of course, the Jim-Pam tying shoe trick (before we'd even seen the episode, mind you). There was a "Leah, will you ma... ke breakfast this morning?" And just about any other way he could try to fake me out.

There was one instance, though, that I thought FOR SURE would be it. Coldplay is our favorite band, and "Yellow" has been our song through most of our relationship (it was on the first time we said I Love You... and he sang it to me in the song. I wasn't sure if he was actually saying it, but he confirmed that after the fact lol). We went to a concert last October, and the band starts to play the song. The BF wraps his arms around me, looks into my eyes, and starts singing...

and nothing. I thought FOR SURE it would happen... our favorite band, them playing our song, etc. etc. etc and nada.

But I've since accidentally found out that he has my great-grandmother's and his grandmother's rings, so I think it's coming soon! We've talked about him using my great-grandmother's stone in a new setting, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)
