So i LOVE this dress!!! It is a budget buster but errr would you buy this dress used?! is the real question, it will really help me decide if I want to sell it. I would sell it for $700.00. BTW the dress was originally a halter and that brooch, pick up type thing was something we did to make it more me... and her name is Naja (naja is actually my sex goddess alter ego and the dress owner named her Naja after me :0)

It is a REALLY great dress! Have you checked to see how much the other pre-owned ones are going for online?
It would help to know how much the dress costs originally. I think on average, I would only pay about 30-40% of the original cost for a pre-owned dress. Anything more expensive than that, I would probably consider buying it new.
This one was 1400 brand new... i think it's a 2010 line so no help there... this is what it looks like before my "alterations and changes"

Ooh, it looks gorgeous on you. I still have a soft spot for Sophia though, I don't know why, though, because you look radiant in this too... I really think it comes down to how it makes you feel. You can budget a little extra here and there (as a broke college student, I'm great at that, haha) but when it comes down to it, just make sure you're wearing the dress that's perfectly you.
It looks great on you! I agree with lily that Sophia is still AMAZING on you, and it's my personal favorite. BUT, if you like this one more, then I think it's beautiful!!! You look REALLY good in it!
Sorry, although this looks good, I like the Sophia better on you! ;)
:( I don't know anymore lol!! When I saw it on the hanger i said oh wow it's gorgeous!! the material is exquisite. and reminds me of a pnina (yeah vegan i think that conversation yesterday did something to me lol)...
eta there is a 700 price difference in the two.
i am looking at sophia and i honestly don't think it looks as good on me as this one does.
@crebre - I just asked my fiance for his opinion, and he thinks Sophia looks better.
BUT! You should go with the one that you love. Because your opinion is really the only one that matters.
But you loved Sophia!
Everyone's budget is different of course but to me it only makes sense to buy a used dress when the original is at least $4-5K, and it's being resold for less than half of that price. If I'm only saving a few hundred dollars I'd rather buy new. Sorry :(
@amanda: yeah i am more curvy in sophia but more couture in naja. i don't know and i have to decide within like the month because it takes 6 months to come in. and most folks wouldn't spend 700 on a used dress :( and i don't think this is one folks would look for because it looks sooo different from the first dress. and i think even i wouldn't pay 700 for a used dress, probably like 400 at the most which means i paid 900 for it... which is only 100 over what my mom wanted to spend.
the new dress just moved sooo much better and made me very happy i don't know how to explain it.
That dress really is gorgeous on you. I do prefer it to the Sophia one.
I am going against the grain... Again!
I LOVE the Naja!!!!! I didn't think a dress would beat Sophia but this one DOES!!!!!!
I agree that it is more couture and I think it suits your personality better!!!!!
I prefer the more dramatic sweetheart with the ruching over the bust and I prefer the smaller ruching on the Naja... I just LOVE IT!!!!!!!
I am not going to touch the budget subject because only you can know whether you can splurge on the dress or not but dress for dress I love the Naja more!
@meliss: i don't think i loved sophia that much anymore, i still really like it but i started not liking it as much, i wished the fabric was more luxurious. i really loved the fabrics of the maggies and really liked the sheen of it sophia just appears cheap to me now....
btw the dress reminds me of a romona keveza-esque spring 2008 type dress... i remember seeing a dress very similar on SYTTD and i loved it... i think that's why i love this dress it says couture to me in its own way, and i could make it my own. sophia just says wanna be couture. shrugs shoulders and tomorrow i could love sophia again. i am perhaps not ready to commit.
If you don't think you love Sophia anymore, then I think you should go for this one. It really is an absolutely amazing dress!!!
@starbit and future: i saw it on a hanger and i REALLY liked it... then i tried on a lace one and it was very pretty, i tried on that one with the shoulder (hence them being in different places because the strap is actually a halter) then i tried on a different one with the umph bit and liked it and was like well could we do that to the other one and she was like oh great idea and we did and it was like omg this is it. this is me. this is couture and great and awesome and i love it and i don't care about shoes or a veil or anything like that i don't care i love this dress. and then the budget was like you idiot why did you even try it on.
Ahhhh, you're realizing the differences in the fabrics! Watch out! It's a slippery slope - I used to think that knockoffs were just as good, and then I got a pair of Manolos. Just one, I told myself, they were used and way discounted and a few seasons old, but oh man they are not the same! Clothes are the same way. It's hard going back once you've noticed the difference!
I like the skirt in the Maggie more... I think the detailing is a little more interesting than in the Sophia. But they really do both look amazing on you.
Honestly, I think Naja is like Sophia's annoyingly pretty, smarter, more talented older sister. You want to hate her because of how she makes Sophia feel, but she's just so darn nice to everyone!
Um, yeah, just run with the analogy. Anyway, it sounds to me like you are trying to talk yourself into keeping Sophia because of the money even though your heart has already left her! If there is any way to cut back on favors or flowers or something to get Naja, go for it. I still love Sophia, too, but the way you talk about them both tells the whole story. Basically, I don't think you can go wrong with either of them!
@lily, she's an essense of australia not a maggie, but i tried on a maggie at home with my mom and lovd the fabric of her...
@amaryllis: exactly!!! naja is like sophia's big sister and when i put her on i actually started calling her sophia... i am unsure so far on what i could cut back on because we are pretty tight on everything and haven't received the catering quote yet. for me naja is what i wanted sophia to be lol does that make sense?
see i love this look... something about this one shoulder that i love....

Hehe oh no crebre, I didn't mean to contribute to your fading dress-love! I can TOTALLY understand what you mean about fabrics. I am a fabric NUT and am paying for the flower girl and bridesmaid dresses just because I NEED everyone in the wedding party to be in silk (this is the ONE non-vegan thing in my life and there's no way I can ever get over it!)...that's also a large part of the reason why we're spending so much on my Pnina, I just love me a good luxe fabric and it is like the second most important thing on my wedding day after FI, by a lot!
I honestly can't see the difference in fabric quality in the pics you posted, but if it's apparent to you when you see the dress in person and when you have it on, then I definitely see where you're coming from and frankly, if it's making that big a difference to you then you should go for the nicer fabric even if it busts your budget a little (I'm so bad...you should never take advice from a girl who spends a ridiculous portion of the wedding budget on the dress alone...). I DO think the newer dress looks good on you, but I think the Sophia is more slimming and interesting (the top is satin and the bottom chiffon, if I'm seeing it right?). Although both are hot! In any event, you've still got ten months, so you have like at least two more months till your decision has to be set in stone, if not longer, right?
It makes total sense! Sophia fulfilled your vision... until you found Naja. Sophia is still fabulous, and I am sure you'd be just as happy with her in the long run. There's just always that "other dress" out there that I think everyone tends to think about from time to time. If you get Naja, I bet you'll still think of Sophia from time to time. Basically, you win either way, even if it is a difficult decision!
(also, I love that you named them as it makes talking about them comparatively so much easier and more entertaining than saying "dress 1.")
Sorry, my reading comprehension = nonexistent tonight! You get what I mean, though. :P
@vegan: lol nah, sophia is all satin, and i am really not liking that line under my belly on it i wish it was longer or something like that i don't know how to describe it for me it emphasizes my gut. but sophia is about one size too small and naja is about 2 sizes too big lol she was side to side on the corset back but i just loved her, even on the hanger i loved her lol. sophia on the hanger was blah... sh.t i dunno i'm going to work out i can't deal with this.
btw naja takes 6 months to come in and another 2 months for alterations. what that means is i have about a month to decide at the most.
@lily: i totally agree with you, after trying on the fabric of the maggie i was like ohhhhh i like this lol but then the sophia just looks cheap to me
@amaryllis: is it strange that when i put that dress on i didn't have a second thought about sophia? i thought to myself THIS is the dress... even my mom loved it until she heard the price lmao!! her words were "Yes really pretty, looks great on you!" after hearing the price she didn't know if the 700 price difference in the two was worth it because they are very similar... so this is one that i would have to help with and i didn't anticipate that. just shoot me now because i doubt if i could sell it after i was done with it you know?
You look absolutely stunning in that first dress! I would snatch it up if I were you!
@km: thanks soo much!!! the price is the only thing causing me pause if it was about 300 cheaper i would snatch it up lol in a heartbeat.
I like the dress on top on you better...Naja? = ) If it's the one you love you should get it!
ETA: I know how you feel about fabrics! That's what I'm starting to think about mine!
@HB: but for me it's completely silly i mean who is going to feel the dress you know?! but then when you feell it it's like omg this is soooooo pretty. i kept looking at it hanging and almost burst into tears. i am reserving tears for something else i am sooo confused about it but i know i don't want a 700 buck cheap dress i mean i may as well have a 200 buck dress if i am just going with cost alone and i am okay with wearing a pair of shoes i already have in my closet. i was sooo happy that i didn't need a long line bra or anything like that, it was like wow this feels sooo good... whatever i am going to go work out i cannot deal with this right now and if the f'g venue comes over budget i will have a meltdown.
Originally, I was going to say stick with Sophia. But now, after reading through this, you sound so in love with naja that I say go with her. You look gorgeous in both, but its a matter of who makes you FEEL gorgeous. I completely understand your reservation because of the extra cost but maybe there is some way to make it work (without putting yourselves in a cereal for dinner for months kind of way) maybe you can put a portion you get back from taxes?
I have to say that Naja gets my vote and I'm laughing still at the comment by Amaryllis about it being the "prettier, smarter, more talented older sister".
This dress conveys elegance and the exact feel of your wedding. Our friend, Sophia is beautiful, but there is something in the clean lines of the Naja that makes me say yes to this dress.
Btw, you look FABULOUS in it. And the one shoulder look is such a hot look right now. Very glamorous but not in an overt way.
Oh wow. I loved Sophia on you, but Naja is STUNNING!
I've got to agree with Belle. I like Naja better. Definitely more sophisticated & cleaner lines! Ithink it fits your style better.
You look AH-MAY-ZING in that dress!!! If you can swing it, I say go for it!
You look gorgeous in both. But in the Naja... you just glow. It's obvious you love that dress and that it makes you feel as beautiful as you look.
If the price difference really is only $300, you MUST chose Naja. Surely you can make up such a small deficit elsewhere -- cheap out on less important elements of the wedding like invitations or flowers, sell something, babysit?
Crebre: OMG I love the Naja!!!!!! it looks amazing on you and I LOVE the one shoulder look..very couture looking and still classic!! You could definately sell that dress...there's always somewhere else to cut corners..not our dresses!! : )
I'm sorry.. I'm a Sophia fan!!!
This one is gorgeous too, you will be stunning no matter what, but the Sophia is so elegant and beautimoussss!
Okay.. I just asked my fiance.. and he votes for Sophia too!!
oh my goodness. what a conumdrum you've gotten yourself in! this dress is wow. especially after your alterations! i think i might be leaning towards this one now
