isn't the first year anniversary gift traditionally paper? why not a ticket to a favorite sports game, movie, etc?
Going off a spin on the traditional paper gift, I've been thinking about getting my husband a Kindle for our first anniversary (I know it's still a year away!). Or maybe I just really want a Kindle for myself...
What is he into? I agree that the tickets idea is the best to go along with the traditional gift. The alternative to a first anniversary is clocks so maybe you could get a really nice watch for him.

My husband gave me airline tickets to go to Orlando for a long weekend at Disney. I gave him a print of the how the stars and skyline was the night we were married. It's really cool, I added a line from our song to it along with our names and wedding date. Here's the website if you are interested:
Also, my brother gave his wife a cherry tree for their first anniversary - their wedding theme was cherry blossoms and paper is made from trees :) I have had friends that have given/received artwork. Tickets to any concert, play, sporting event are always a hit.
I am not married yet but my anniversary is still coming up in a few weeks. I am sending him on a scavenger hunt...kind of. I am sending him to a couple places (his parent's house, where we had our first date, etc) where he will get a clue at each place and a small little gift - like his favorite candy, a picture of us, etc.
His last clue will lead him to me, drinks, and dinner at the pub where we met years ago. Money is tight b/c of the wedding and this was fun and relatively cheap.
@ ladybug0506 - The cherry blossom idea is so beautiful! Your SIL is a very luck lady! :o)

I am almost not a newlywed anymore - I can't believe a year has flown by! so my question is: what have or will you get your husband for your first anniversary? All suggestions appreciated :)
