Try TJ Maxx and Marshalls. They have a bunch for great price points, and you can definitely hit up a craft store to give it a special touch.
What kind of look are you going for?
Awesome!!!
I would love to go to that bridal shower :-)
Here is a link to a site where I get all my hats from: http://www.grannysbridal.com/Shoppe/pc/Victorian-c973.htm
What if you do a fascinator? They're in style now so you might be able to find a cute one that's not too expensive at an accessories store? Or try Etsy?
@Amaryllis: Ummm, pretty but with a twist? I've seen some crazy hats and I don't want to go into that much detail, but I want something unique as well.
@MissHoneyBun: I think you have that bass ackwards ;)
How fun! Check out the Derby hats on eBay. Or, possibly buy a hat then decorate it with feathers, etc. from Michael's. Michael's always has coupons, so if you have time, buy things gradually to decorate your hat. Good Luck!!
How fun!! I love hats.
@Amaryllis:Wow!! Some of those are very interesting lol.
haha i so agree I want to come too!! SO fun.
How about Ebay, or the flea market, or craft show? Again you can still go to Michaels/JoAnns and give it your own flair. Esp with the bride's colors of her wedding or theme?
You know that I am sitting here turning green with envy, you know how much I love hats.
Sorry ladies, I didn't mean to abandon my thread. FI came home suggesting a ride on the motorcycle and grabbing a bite to eat since it was 75 and sunny here. I had to oblige
@noritake22: Thanks for the site! I'll have to search it a bit more...
@Amaryllis: Oh girl... I've seen my fair share of insane Derby hats. lol
@melisslp:@irishbride2be: I am def going to check out ebay.
@tksjewelry:I've been making you turn green a lot lately...heh heh heh
Oh did I mention this shower is April 10th?! So not far away at all!
How about a local thrift store or consignment shop? I would guess lots of people donate or consign their previously worn Derby hats in Kentucky??
@NotYourTypicalBride: Actually, you'd be surprised how few there are :(
@Mrs.tobe: That's a shame... I had visions of entering a thrift store and finding racks of fun hats to try on. :( In that case, etsy comes to mind. I did a quick search for "derby hat" and there are some fun ones for $25-$30. Or maybe etsy can provide some inspiration and you can decorate your own!?
@NotYourTypicalBride: I know, I wish our thrift stores were like that! I'm thinking I might have to decorate my own, after I find some inspiration... Not sure how THAT will turn out! lol
Check resale shops. They shoud definitely have some (and there's got to be a way to clean them before you wear it).---oh, just read that that would be a not good idea.
I guess go where older ladies shop. They LOVE their hats!
The last time I needed a hat was for an outdoor wedding. I have a very large head so even buying a hat is not easy.
Eventually I found a wide brimmed black hat and decorated it myself with some black tulle, a black ribbon with tiny white polka dots and a small beaded embellishment I found at the fabric store.
I had the nicest hat there if I do say so myself.
Do you like this look?
Have you checked on etsy? I love yellow and thought this one was pretty cute, not sure how winning it would be...
Just type in derby hat, sounds like a great shower!
@julies1949:I think I'm going to try and go with something more floral... I did remember that afriend of mine made one last year. I might either borrow hers or get her to help me make one.
The dat you made sounds really nice! I definitely want a wide brimmed hat, I have a big head too. :/
This was my friend's hat from last year:

What do you guys think of the hat above??? Should I go with that, or DIY one?
Wear your friend's hat!! it's lovely and definitely doesn't look like something you just picked up from TJMAX. Failing that - PM me. I work in the costume department for UK and have several fabulous hats at my disposal.
I'm not a huge fan of your friend's hat, to be honest (just my opinion though! I'm more of a pink hat person). I bet you could DIY something that's super cute, if you decide to go that route!
I'm a Kentucky gal myself. If you are near Lexington or Louisville you could pop into Dillards and check out all the hats that are probably coming in... last year there were lots for under $30! :) I also think ebay would be a great place to look. A couple of Louisville consignment shops also sell Derby hats, I think.
Sounds like a really fun shower!!
DIY! you can add some fun personal touches of your own. What about something like this? they would be pretty simple to make

The hat my friend did looks a LOT better when it's on a head, but I didn't want to put apicture of her up on here. ;)
@Dragonsus:Ohhhh, I'm going ot have to send you a PM! Do you have pictures? That would be SO awesome!
@meladoug: I'm just not sure I'll be able to make it to Louisville before then. I'm not far, but my schedule is always crazy. :(
@SandAndSea: I really like the second one!
Glad to see some more KY gals on here!
Okay...so this is what my friend's hat looks like on.I wanted to post this last night but I was already at work :(
I found a hat on ebay that I like, but honestly can't see myself spending 39 bucks on it, then 10.99 in shipping costs.

@Mrs.tobe: oh wow, it looks completely different on. It's so much cuter! You should wear it with a similar dress but in hot pink or red! va va voom!
I love that hat, shoot I love all big hats. Check out Garden Ridge and see if they have the spring hats in. Now I may have to add some feathers to mine.
We're having hats at my shower on Sunday too!
If you don't want to spend a lot on a hat, try the fascinator/fancy headband route. That always works. :)
@tksjewelry: I'm going to try and call Garden Ridge, but not sure when I'll be able to get up there. It might end up being too much trouble to try to DIY one. But I'll put in some sort of effort ;)
I love her hat too.... and she gave me another one that's white with a black ribbon around the base, black feathers, and a huge hot pink flower. It also has a bigger brim.
Now ANOTHER choice.
Go with one of hers, those are so cute. I thought you had to make one and you wanted one like hers, oops, should have read that better. It is your shower and the only thing you should be worried about is showing up and what shoes to wear with your dress. Now go and have fun (and a few mimosas)

I just got an invite in the mail for a bridal shower that's going to have an Oaks theme. For all you bees out there that don't know what the Oaks are... it's the horse race in Kentucky that takes place the day before the Derby.
Since said bride is getting married the day before Derby (can you say HANGOVER for that weekend??) it is fitting that they would do this for her shower.
Now my problem?
1. I don't want to spend lots of moolah on a hat
2. The are having a contest for who wears the best hat
3. I am very competitive
So I need something original, and that won't break the bank. I'm going to surf the net, but I thought I'd ask ideas from you ladies as well!
