I wasn’t sure which tab to put this under, but I suppose “Etiquette” was the best.
When did/are you ladies sending your engagement announcement to your local paper?
The reason I ask is because in every wedding book I’ve read (honestly, it hasn’t been many) and every wedding website that provides a checklist of items to finish in a certain time frame, they claim you should do it soon after you’ve gotten engaged. The part that confuses me if that in my local paper, the couples aren’t announcing their engagement until a couple months before the wedding. Is this the new norm?
I work in a flower shop that has been up and running for over 50 years and the owner said at our last meeting, “We have to become more involved with bridal shows. It isn’t like the old days where we send out a letter to the mother of the bride after we see their announcement in the paper to get them in the store!”
We haven’t put any announcement in the paper yet, so I’m wondering…are you putting an announcement in the paper? If so, when?

My mom did one for us shortly after we got engaged. I don’t really think it matters whether you do it early in the engagement or months after.

Most of the ones I’ve seen go up soon after the engagement. We didn’t do one though, it’s not really my family’s thing. Having one so close to the wedding sounds more like a wedding announcement to me (although those are meant to be on the day of the wedding or afterwards I think).

We haven’t done a paper announcement. We just called everyone. To tell you the truth, we didn’t even think about doing one. To me though, it would just mean that more vendors would be contacting us, and we try to limit that, so we probably won’t do one at all.

I suppose it makes sense that people don’t want to be bombarded with vendors calling or sending mail (the business I work at used to send letters!). However, it seems odd, and a bit redundant, to me that people are sending their engagement announcement to the paper and two months later (or sooner) they send the wedding announcement.
