I've never really seen an engagement announcement mail out unless it was an invite to an engagement party. You're probably good to go with just an STD, and just letting word spread by mouth.
Both Mr.TKE and I called everyone (important) in our families. And we are tentative on STDs, we may just do invitations.

Did you send out any cards announcing your engagment? Or did you just send a save the date card? Most of my family lives in St. Louis. I feel like I should call them, but I would rather send out a formal inventation. What did you do?
