I probably wouldn’t be offended, but then again I am always sick.

You said that you were just joking around so I would assume that she was as well. Don’t stress about it.

i wouldn’t take it too personally unless you think there really is more behind it

You are probably being sensitive, but at the same time, I completely understand having those thoughts!  I wonder if the employer realizes how many days employees typically take in other professions… Honestly, I have no idea… But I am a teacher, and we get 12 “sick” days a year… and there are many teachers (especially with children) that take that many, if not more.

It looks like you are a concientous employee.. I wouldn’t worry too much!

Did you speak up at the time to correct her misunderstanding?

@missjewels:  I don’t see it as inappropriate. If you get a lot of colds, maybe in her mind you are “always sick”. She didn’t say you were “off sick”.

I think you might be reading into it too much. I think it was meant more as a lighthearted joke than as an actual evaluation of your work performance/dedication.

I wouldn’t be offended, my boss says stupid things every once in awhile, just like any other person.  I also work for a small business that’s family owned, it can definitely be frustrating sometimes!

P.S. Even if you don’t take a lot of sick days you can still be sick at work, like sniffly, cold, coughing, etc.  Maybe your employer would prefer you take sick days instead of possibly passing it around the office.  Just an idea.

@hummingbirdkrista:  That’s what I was thinking – I don’t take many sick days, but that means I often come to work even though I am sick, and I’ll sometimes complain about it. So me being sick is generally quite visible to everyone around me and I often hear the “You’re always sick,” thing too. I don’t think too much of it – I don’t take any more days off than anyone else I work with, so they can’t really complain.

I am able to work from home if I need to, so it drives me nuts when people come in when they’re sick. If someone tells me how sick they are while at the office, I just get annoyed that they’re spreading it around our whole department.
