@thumpurr:  Bake some muffins or something, walk over, knock on their door, and say, “Hi, I’m Thumper.  I live next door!  I wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood with these delicious muffins.  Is that your car going off each night?  Is there any way you can stop it from going off each night?”

That should work.  If you’re willing.  =)

Your first approach should be really pleasant and neighbourly. If after that, the issue continues, you may have to be a bit more abrupt/direct. Calling in a complaint about noise isn’t going to result in their child being taken, so I wouldn’t let that sway you. Besides: that poor kid is probably being woken up too, so really you’re doing them a favour.

@thumpurr:  You are being too nice. I don’t see why you should ask them nicely. Are they deaf? If not, then they know it’s happening and just don’t give a hoot about disturbing their neighbors. Call the police every time. There has to be a noise ordinance there…and this is exactly why. So people can sleep.

I think that’s the best way to handle it. Give them some time to fix the problem before taking action (: At least you can say you tried!

We have an annoying neighbour but nothing what you’re describing. My neighbour just cuts his lawn every other day, sweeps it with a broom, constantly waters it, and literally stands at the street and stares at it. When he notices “uneven” spots in the grass he clips them with scissors. He also blows his leaves off of his lawn into the street in front of our house! It’s so weird. I don’t mind having other people’s leaves on our lawn, but it’s so weird that he would intentionally blow them all in front of other people’s houses. It’s not just us – he blows them infront of houses down the street and across from him. He’s retired and apparently loves his lawn. Obviously it could be worse aha…

@thumpurr:  I’d be more concerned about *why* it’s going off? Which I would tell them. “Heya we noticed your car alarm goes off a lot… Do you think it is just ultra sensitive or do you think we should be concerned that anyone’s hanging around our homes at night?”. Assuming it’s just ultra sensitive, I would offer a friendly suggestion of them figuring out how to disarm it.

@smv22114:  I think that’s a good idea too, it shifts the focus of the conversation so that they don’t feel blamed or get defensive. It brings up the problem without sounding accusatory.

@AB Bride:  Ahah I don’t want to give him the satisfaction 😉 I don’t know why it irritates me that he cares about his lawn so much.. it just does! UM WHAT?! he just walked down the street with a giant wheel barrow of grass clippings and compost and he just dumped them in the park/walking trails across the street. WHO DOES THAT?! WHYY IS HE SO ANNOYING!?

@sugarpea: I’m so right there with you! We used to have a neighbor that cut his grass literally all of the time. Didn’t matter what time of year, the weather…nothing. Rain, snow, extreme shine and he was out there on his mower mowing. Even at 5:30 in the morning on a Saturday morning. I remember one time it was actually snowing outside (had been for maybe 2 hours) and he was riding along mowing…it didn’t even need to be cut! And here’s the kicker, if we started to mow he would automatically get on his mower. It didn’t matter what time of day or if he just did it himself the day before or that day of. Never failed… what a creep. You’re right it is SO annoying.

@thumpurr:  What? Report them to management or call the police, already. Who cares if they have a kid or not? What possible difference does it make?

@lolita39:  Ahah that’s exactly what this guy is like! We start mowing and all of a sudden his needs to be mowed for the second time that day! It’s so annoying!

Sorry for the threadjack, OP (:

I’d be going over and saying something to them.

Everyone has annoying neighbors!! We have 1 in particular.  Trash. They do nothing with their house. They have garbage, bikes, toilets, lamps, furniture…you name it, piled up on their porch and yard. Their grass is always thigh high every summer. Their kids run up and down the street throwing rocks down the hill.  Climping on the neighbors garage roof, screaming, writing death notes and sticking them on neighbors doors, threatening my kids they they are going to kill them in their sleep. They are the same age as my kids, or younger! WTF!?!?  My kids aren’t allowed to speak to them anymore. They are violent children. The parents had the kids taken away so many times and put in temp foster care. The dad just got out of jail for drinking and driving and a hit and run, almost killing a pedestrian.  They steal water from the neighbors outdoor faucets.  We put a cover/lock on it so they can’t steal our water.  Idiots. I hate them.

@sugarpea:  Maybe it’s a mental illness that will soon be documented by TLC! Ha!

OP, I’m also sorry for the threadjack.

I would definitely try to knock on their door and resolve the issue in a peaceful manner. And I know this might be random, but it is possible that they are a Deaf couple. I have lots of Deaf friends who get annoyed neighbors because their car (or something else) is doing something wonky that they can’t hear. It could be a reason for the weird/rude look as well. It’s doubtful, but something to keep in mind!

@thumpurr: I’d try approaching them again in a friendly way just to know you gave it a shot.  That’s so weird they’d be that unfriendly over a simple hello.  They’re probably just jerks.

We’re pretty lucky that everyone in our apartment complex is really mellow.  The guy who lives next to us is a dream neighbor: really considerate, quiet, friendly, super nice, apologetically offers to repot our dead plants, totally cool with our sometimes shrieking puppy.  There’s only one thing: we suspect he might be a drug dealer.  There were a few odd things: he’s a musician but we never hear music, it was odd a musician could afford this place (it’s probably the most expensive unit in our complex), he’s constantly going in and out of his apartment.  The most suspicious thing is that my husband saw stacks of about 25 grand in cash at this guy’s place.  Hopefully there’s some innocent explanation, but drug dealer makes the most sense.
