@Atalanta:  Yeah my names are Charlotte and Elizabeth. They are so ridiculously popular it’s unbelievable. I would like something slightly less popular yet traditional but these 2 are my favorite!

Imogen is the top girls’ name..? I’ve never even heard of it…

But no, I wouldn’t name my kid after someone famous. Maybe if it was a more common name that people wouldn’t automatically associate with a movie or whatever…maybe it wouldn’t be so bad? Bella got pretty terrible pretty quick though, lol.

My baby name has been Violet since i was like 12. it was always an unusual name and apparently now it’s trendy 🙁

Also Katniss reminds me way too much of cat piss.

I might name my kid the same name as a famous character, but not AFTER the character.

I think it’s kind of awesome that Katniss is on there, to be honest.  Yay books!

I love Violet, Eleanor, and Seraphina (maybe from His Dark Materials??), but they’re vetoed by my husband already.

    Where’s Hermione????

Edited to add: I voted yes in the poll because I would name a child after a character who was famous to ME…but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone would know.  I would do it sneakily, y’know?

I think it’s fascinating that until the 1960s, Mary was the number 1 name for girls…like every single year.  In fact, it was number 1 until 1962, when Lisa took over for a few years (Mary was second).  From 1880 to 1961, MILLIONS of Marys were born.

@Westwood:  I have a friend called Imogen and she was named after the Shakespeare character

Grr Henry is on the list. *shrugs* The FI and I want to name a son Henry after my father. And love that Atticus is on the list but that’s because I study Ancient Greek and Roman history. But I wouldn’t intentionally name a child after a famous character. Well… I wish I could call a future child Sirius or Hannibal but I know better than to inflict my character obsessions on the poor kid.

I wouldnt name my child anything ridiculous like Katniss or Django.  But if I fell in love with a character enough that had a name I liked, I would consider it.  My daughter is named in part after a celebrity whom my husband swears I could be related to.  The other part is because it’s a name that we both genuinely like.  If either of us didnt like her name, then it wouldnt have been considered.

All names have to come from somewhere, I suppose – ‘Vanessa’ was invented by Jonathan Swift, after all, in the 1700s. That said, I dislike just about every name on that link. Old-fashioned names are making a comeback (Eleanor, Henry, etc.). I think Amelia might be the only name on there I’m OK with.
