@Ms. Drgnfly:  The problem with whipped cream frosting is that it really can’t sit out for long. Whipped cream needs to be refrigerated.

A mascarpone or cream cheese frosting would work for me.

You could consider doing a flavored frosting/filling like hazelnut- like a hazelnut mocha? Or raspberry mocha?  

Personally, I like plain vanilla frosting (good buttercream, not frosting made with shortening or those awful store bought frostings that are waay too sweet) with rich cake.  And my absolute favorite frosting ever is the Betty Crocker 7-minute frosting- it’s a tiny bit marshmallowy in texture, very light but so so good.  It can be flavored as well- we did it with almond extract for my graduation cake and the cake was completely wiped out by the time I had time to get some!
