Well, I have more questions to add to the ever popular topic of “who to tip?” I’ve read through some past posts already, and they have been very helpful. But I still have questions 🙂 I think I am just too literal. I don’t want to offend anyone by not tipping!
1) Caterers. Caterers are a seperate company from the reception site. There is a “service charge” included in the contract. I’ve read mixed reviews online. Some say that the service charge is the gratuity and extra tipping is not necessary. Others disagree. Which is the right answer? And if I do need to tip, who exactly do I tip? Our caterer will have a staff of approximately 12 people there.
Our catering bill is coming out to approximately $3,144.85 (just food, not including cake or alcohol) and $700 of that is the “service charge.” Then there is a $175 bartender fee and $125 cake attendant fee.
2) Bartenders. Bartenders are employed by our catering company. There is a “bartender fee” in our contract. Is that the tip or do we tip in addition?
3) Photographer. Our main photog owns the business, but has a second shooter. I am a photographer myself and have never been tipped for a wedding, and I always pay my second shooter. I’ve read online that if the photographer owns the business you shouldn’t tip them, but if they work for the company you should. Going by those guidelines, that would mean that the second shooter would get a tip and the main photog wouldn’t. And that seems a little weird to me.
Thank you so so much for your input on this!
