A little over 2 weeks ago my Fiance woke me up to check my temperature and I had a fever of 107 degrees (not 100.7, 107.) After we frantically got my temperature down (which was terrifying, I literally almost died in his arms), I was taken to the doctor and discovered that I had a really bad kidney infection. The doctor put me on the antibiotic Ciproflaxin 500mg for twice a day for 10 days. I went and got my Rx filled (along with my birth control, OrthoTriCyclcen) and the pharmicist said nothing about the effects they have on each other. It has been a week since i got off the antibiotic, and we have done nothing since I got sick. I was wondering when it would be okay to be intimate again? I have read in some places (medical studies) where it is safe because Cipro does interact with birth control, and others where you should wait a week to a month. If it makes a difference, I was on my period when I got sick. Also, before birth control, I was incredibly irregular. And I was thinking would I really ovulate if my body was trying to fight off an infection?

I would use backup just incase! It’s okay to have sex just if you are taking pills and antibiotics at the same time its risky. If you are on a new pack of pills and are no longer taking antibiotics (have not taken them with any of the new pills) then you should be fine.

Just going by my family….that is how my sister was concieved so definitely use condoms, pull-out method, the sponge, or whatever you’re comfortable with.
My mom had a ear infection and decided to take antibiotics on her pill. She wasn’t planning to get pregnant for another year as she just lost a bunch of weight and was content for the time being. She unexpectedly didn’t get her period and found you weren’t supposed to take it because it alters the effectiveness.
I have minocycline on me right now that specifically says certain ones alter it and to ask your pharmacist/doctor before taking it.

@brandybelle: I would wait until you’re off the Cipro and maybe a week into the next pack of pills just to be sure.

Finish the antibiotics but continue taking your BC…finish that pack, and then start a new one. I would use backup for at least a week. If I were you I would use back up for two weeks afterwards. Im paranoid and with graduate school in my future I dont want to risk it.

Many antibiotics can decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Keep taking the birth control pills, but use a backup method of birth control for a couple of weeks.

Use condoms if you can for a few more weeks.

I would defiantly use a back up. Two of my cousins got pregnant when taking antibiotics and birth control…but that is just my family.
