So I am on the pill and just had to take 3 days of antibiotics for a UTI.  I know that antibiotics interfere with the pill.  How long do we need to use a backup method?  My nurse said a week but I have also heard the rest of the pack.  I am hoping its a week because I (we I should say) do not want to use a condom on our wedding night!

You're supposed to wait until your next period is over. :( That's what I've heard from every doctor/gyno I've been to.

I'm pretty sure it's just a week. I know that's what my doctor has told me any time I've taken antibiotics. I've never gotten knocked up. lol

Last time I got antibiotics for strep throat my doctor said that if the pill is 99% effective the antibiotics only take you down to like 90-95% effective while the antibiotics are in your system, which is usually like a week or so after the last antibiotic pill you take.  I didn't even use backup method while I was taking my antibiotics and no pregnancy here! Not even a scare! :)

My pharmacist said to use pretection up until one week after your last dose of antibiotics.

Oh dangit! Well, now I know. I wonder if it depends on the type of pill you're on?

Probably not. I'm probably just unlucky in the info i receive. :p

It should be one week back-up method only (male or female condom or spermicide). If you are on a progesterone-only pill you may want to consult one more time with your physician about the length of time using a back-up method. Another factor is how long you have been taking the pill and do you take it consistently? It sounds like you will be fine.

Another option if you don't want to use the back-up method, you could take Plan B (just for peace of mind). Note though, that means the additional hormones from Plan B in addition to your birth control could cause some spotting, irritability, make your period a little irregular, etc. OR it won't do any of that.

    Just a couple of options.
