Born and raised here. PM me with what type of area you are looking for and I'll let you know a little about Sac :)
This is so funny! We are moving to Placerville/Diamond Springs are after the wedding! Our house is going up for sale on April 1, and we my FIs job transfers on July 1. I had a phone interview for a job in Sacramento just last week.
California here we come!
I'm from Redding, which is about 2 hours north of Sacramento, but I currently live in San Diego. I did an internship last summer in Sacramento and I fell in love! It is a very nice little city and the downtown/midtown area is a lot of fun! It's a very walking friendly city, and the people are very friendly!
I'm from Davis, which is half an hour ourside of Sacramento! The greater Sacramento area is a fantastic place to live! It's pretty safe, schools are decent (Davis's are AWESOME), and there's a lot to see and do because it's the state capitol! It's a huge area but it always manages to feel like a small town. If you have other questions, feel free to ask :)
I moved to Sac. I haven't had much fun here (probably because I was from SoCal and theres everything down there) Davis was the only place that felt a little more like home. At least San Fran is close by otherwise I'd seriously have home sick blues.
People are not joking when they say "small town feel"
If you are into small town feel, go for it. Otherwise this place will get you sick fast!
Wow, I'm suprised at the positive comments about Sac lol. I'm from here and went to college in Davis, and moved back due to some crazy circumstances. I hate it here lol. It's boring and housing is super expensive! They also cut back on police (which is everywhere) so crime has skyrocketed, even in "decent" neighborhoods. If you do move here, I say look in Greenhaven/Pocket Area (NOT MEADOWVIEW) and Natomas (NOT near Power Balance Pavilion). Those areas are somewhat safer. Stay away from Meadowview, Oak Park, some parts of Rancho Cordova, West Sacramento, Florin, and Fruitridge! Elk Grove is also nice, but housing is super expensive, and the crime has really gone up.
There isn't much to do as far as big name venues. Sometimes the Power Balance Pavilion (aka Arco Arena) gets good shows, but usually the good concerts are in the Bay Area. There's the movies, a couple "malls" (Arden and Roseville Galleria are the best), and a few things for kids like water parks and the zoo. To me, downtown Sacramento is a tad depressing after you go there a lot. The downtown mall is big, but empty, and Old Sacramento is okay. The best shopping is in Roseville or Vacaville, which is about 45 minutes either way. There are amusement parks in the Bay Area, which is about 1-2 hours away. I think it depends on what you're looking for in a city.
I think once the thrill of being in a new town is gone, you might dislike it lol. Feel free to message me if you need more advice!
@misssydneyj: lol, you couldnt pay me to move to Natomas.
Nicer places to live besides Sacramento Sacramento, Davis, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Granite Bay, Roseville.
If you need to live in Sacramento- Carmicheal, Fair Oaks, Midtown.
I live in the florin area right now, which isn't that bad, but for raising kids not what we would prefer.
west sacramento is actually very nice in the bridgeway lakes area. there is a whole brand new area or west sac that is very reasonable, and pretty happening, you are close to downtown but still far enought away to have suburb feel. lot of bay area people live in this area now. I love it..

Fi and I are considering moving there after the wedding. Is it a nice place to live? Any areas to avoid? Any nice places to live?
