I love my kindle! I have the standard wifi one.
Love: Long battery life, no more book clutter (our bookshelves are maxed out on space), instant posession of books, easy to read and handle.
Cons: Afraid of ruining it at the beach or pool (they make covers/skins but I'm still paranoid), some ebooks are still too expensive for my liking (many new releases and best sellers are too expensive for an ebook)
Took a few days to get used to not actually holding a book, but I think kindle does an excellent job at making it seem book-like...if that makes sense.
Also Amazon sometimes e-mails me coupon codes...a couple weeks ago I got a book for $1.00!
I have the K2. The drawback I have with the $79 version that I've seen is the screen is not as up to par as the others. It's very glary and many have complained about it. Also there's no "real" keyboard. You use the 5 way button to go to a letter, which if you are always in the kindle store looking for books, this will be annoying. Also a major con is its wifi only not 3G. So you will always need to be in a wifi area to download. For the price, it's a great deal. The special offer advertisements would drive me crazy but I'm on my kindle every day. If this is for more casual reading, go for it.
If you read, then you'll like it!
Last year my boss gave Kindle's out for the holidays. The men all regifted them to their wives. I've used mine to read a few chapters of a book, but then never went back to it. It's great for those that like to read, but for me, it was a waste. I'm lucky to read a book a year, but with my schedule, I really don't have time.
I'm hoping to get one for Christmas!
I heard you can now rent free library books on the Kindle. Anyone try this?
I haven't tried it yet but hoping to soon! I have too much waiting on my kindle to be read! ;)>
I am gettign a kindle soon , and my Amazon Prime account has a free renting library like
BayStateBride is saying! It is completely worth the money to get a prime account, considering all the free reads you get. I'm in love!
I love it! FI suggested we get one, and though he uses it more than I do, it's something we both love. The only con I can think of is that you can't just flip to and from different pages or chapters of the book as easily as you can with an actualy book- but that's not a really big deal.
It's nice because it's small and easy to take with you in your bag, you don't have books taking up space in your house, and you can get all the "classics" for free, and usually find all other books on their at a nice discount. I've even gotten some textbooks on it for school, which made it more than pay for itself. If you enjoy reading, definitely get one!
@snoie: If you want to give it to some one Im here. lol
I want to get a kindle in the future. Which one Im not sure. But I would use it at least a few times a week. I love mystery books and things.
Hopefully by the time I do decide to get one, the nice ones are even cheaper then what they are now. :)
LOVE my kindle. I can make the text big to read at the gym, plus there's so many cheap books. They do a daily deal everyday with a book for $2 or less, and every month they do 100 titles under $4. I wasn't sure I wanted one originally, totally love it now.
ohhh i want!!!! im hoping dh gets me one for xmas....i saw he was looking it up on his computer.... and he doesnt read... eek!!!
@MissGreen: oh even more fabulous news for everyone, thank you for the information!
I have the version with the keyboard and I LOVE it! I carry it in my purse. You never know when you'll have to wait and need something to read. :) I also hate clutter so not having a bunch of paperback books laying around is fabulous.
Mr.ND got me one as a birthday gift and I cried like a baby! LOL.
I LOVE the thing. In the summer, I was reading about a book every 2 days. It's so fun to grab the free books, get the books you want ASAP, find great deals, etc. I have the 3G/wifi one with the amazon leather cover with the light (he totally spoiled me), and it's great to read in bed or in the morning for my devotioanals. I've neglected it over the semester, but once finals are over, I'm sure I'll be devouring books again!
I'd say to go to the store and test out the different versions to see what you like. I'm glad he splurged and got the 3G/wifi one with the full keyboard (now there's the fire, not familiar with it) because I can grab books whenever I want, and even check my email and such. Great battery life, you learn to navigate it really easily within a day or two, and it is so easy to carry around. Maybe once I get a job I'll return the favor and get him one as well :-)
I wanted the fire for Christmas. It's like an IPad just smaller but it's only wifi. I live in the boondocks so I need 3G. :( I'll just wait bc I'm sure there will be another version soon! :)
I hardly ever put mine down - I can't get enough of it! I didn't want one for a long time as I love reading proper books, but my mom bought me one last year for Christmas and I really love it now.
Pros:
* Easily transportable - I always toss a book in my purse as I never know when I'm going to get stuck waiting in a line/traffic/for someone etc, and the Kindle is the perfect size for my rather small purse.
* Easy way to browse lots of different books and purchase books I may not have otherwise looked at; particularly if you use Amazon's website instead of trying to do it on your Kindle.
* Perfect for use outside in the sun (no glare) and perfect for bedtime reading as it shuts off automatically after ten minutes of non-use.
* Long battery life, especially if you turn the wireless off
* Lots and lots of free books - use the Amazon website to find them easier
Cons:
* Not all books are available on Kindle (I'm thinking of the Harry Potter series in particular)
* Some books are quite pricey - $13 or more for a paperback. But you can add them to your wish list and check back on the prices regularly
* The actual Kindle is only ok for purchasing books - good if you know the exact title, not so good if you want to browse - use the website via computer instead.
All in all, it was a great purchase and I love my Kindle. I still love hard copy books and buy them occasionally but the Kindle is brilliant and I'm so glad I have one.
One last note - if you get one, purchase the cover with the light attached to it. I don't use the light that often but it's nice to have (especially on airplanes) and I think it's a better quality cover than the non-light covers.
@MissGreen: It's like an iTouch, they come out every other month it seems!
@Ree723: Agreed, the cover with the light is amazing. Great quality and so convenient.
Yes! My husband surprised me with one for Christmas last year. I wasn't immediately sold on them right away, but can't live without it now! It goes everywhere with me in my purse. My husband and I fight over who gets it before bed and when we travel.
A couple of tips:
Get the warranty- I have already worn one out, took about 9 months for me to wear out, but I am a very heavy reader too.
Get the one with 3G or Wi-Fi if possible, this way you aren't chained to your computer to download.
For the basic Kindle, don't expect the internet to be that great, but it is functional when you don't have a laptop/smart phone readily available.
I've found that we have saved money by buying the Kindle books and definitely saved space in our tiny house. I still buy favorite books in paper format, but love having everything right there in the Kindle too.
Oh and I forgot another positive - they have GREAT customer service! My mom had an issue twice with the letters on her Kindle keyboard wearing off and both times Amazon sent out packaging/postage to return the Kindle and shipped her a new one free of charge. There have been a few other issues here and there and Amazon has always been super responsive and helpful.
I started a similar thread a few months ago. I have since bought one and to say I am in love with it is a huge understatement. My husband is actually a little jealous of my kindle
Definitely get one! I can't think of a single con. And I LOVE the cover with the built in light. You never have to worry about buying batteries.
I LOVE my kindle! I love not having to wait to buy books (most of them anyway). The free books can sometimes be good too! It's easy to control and read. LOVE it!
Thanks ladies! I have to look into the different kinds to see which screen has the best non-glare because I have sensitive eyes lol
I have the Kindle with the keyboard. I got it about 3 months ago. It's great I love it.
I do know the the $79 version doesn't have audio capabilities. It isn't a deal breaker and I haven't used the audio version to read. I have tested it out and it is pretty cool that it reads books to you.I paid $139 for the wifi version with special offers but for $79 it's a great deal even without the audio part.
Just want to make sure you knew that the cheaper versions don't have audio capability.
My husband got me the $79 dollar one for my birthday last week. So far I love it. He has the keyboard one and there isn't much of a difference. One major one is that when it is off you get an ad instead of a book cover but since they have been promoting Breaking Dawn so much lately it is a lot of looking at Jacob and I am okay with that. LOL
I think you will love it!
@Mrs. Guinness: For the beach/pool I just stick it in a ziploc bag! Never had a problem!
Also agree with the pp about the warranty - BUT I recommend getting the SquareTrade warranty and using a 30% off coupon (they always have them). With SquareTrade you get a refund of the purchase price if it breaks - which you can use to replace your broken Kindle with the latest model (as opposed to being sent a refurbished model which I think is the deal with the other warranty)!
I LOVE my kindle! My only suggestion would be to get one with free 3G, totally worth it. That way if you're traveling etc you don't have to find an Internet connection. And even though it's quite slow, it has a browser to check your email etc.
So please, which is the best? I've the link here. Do you guys use the keyboard? Is it necessary? Which one has the best anti-glare (I work on computers all day) Do we have to get the warranty and book cover? I want to get one pretty soon so any help is appreciated. My library now rents books if you have a kindle and that's the only thing that has been stopping me since.
I have the K3 and I love it. I downloaded Scrabble to it and my FI and I pass it back and forth while watching TV at night or while we're out for a drink.
Kindle Secret:
Search for books online that are in .PDF or .DOC format - you'd be suprised how many popular titles there are (including Harry Potter).
Download the book, then email it to your kindle with the subject line 'convert' and the .pdf becomes readable on kindle. I've saved stupid amounts of money doing this - I'm sorry, but I refuse to pay $7.00 for an online document, when pretty much all of that money is profit for them since there's no material for them to produce. I buy new books and best sellers, but anything that came out years ago I grab in .pdf. There are usually a few formatting and spelling mistakes, but I don't really care.
I would recommend any of them except the $79.00 version as I posted above. I would not get a kindle that doesn't have 3G capabilities and this one doesn't. The K3 is wonderful but the upgrade to that is the kindle touch. It's just the K3 but with a touch screen. Also there have been complaints with the $79 version on the glare issue but none of the others. I have the K2 which is the second generation and I love it. I won't ever upgrade until this one dies. Hopefully never! Most definetly invest in a cover and the warranty. You cover your phone right? :) With a case you can throw it in your purse and not worry.
Edit: Forgot about the keyboard. I use mine a lot to search in the store and to write and highlight notes in my books. I prefer to have one as I feel it would be more user friendly than an up down button. But as I said above I use my kindle everyday. If your a less casual reader the keyboard may not be an issue for you.
I've had the 2nd generation Kindle for almost 3 years. My DH got it for me for my birthday.
I LOVE it. I commute by public transit and it's so nice to have my book at my fingertips especially when the book I'm reading is 1,000 pages (i.e. the Pillars of the Earth).
I love the e-ink screen and how you can read in direct sunlight without glare or fading. I took it on a week long vacation to Belize and read every day in the sun.
The battery life is amazing, as long as the wireless is turned off it lasts 3+ weeks between charges.
I also love how all the classics are free since they are out of copyright and that there are great free books all the time. Some of them are bad, but some are good and entertaining and you can't beat free!
The only cons I've found are that you usually cannot read it during takeoff and landing on a plane as it is considered an electronic device (although some airlines don't care).
When I first got the kindle I really didn't want it, I was way too much of a book person. Now that I have it I am a total kindle convert!
My FI and I got my younger sister a 3G Kindle for Christmas last year, and she is beyond in love with it.
She even texted me last month saying "I will probably never say this enough while I'm living, but you and hubby to be are f*****g amazing for giving me a Kindle! Seriously my fav technology."
I don't have a Kindle myself because I have an iPad, but I do have the Kindle app on my iPad :-D
Oh, when you get a kindle you have to check out this site. It gives you an email and you can follow them on fb for great deals or free ebooks for your kindle or nook. http://www.pixelofink.com/category/free-kindle-books/
I've had my kindle for 3 months and the only book I had to buy was a textbook for my class. I have about 100 ebooks on my kindle now. Love it! I have plenty of reading material.
Oh, if any of you are Amazon Prime members, they now have a lending library for Prime members for free! They have a lot of best sellers. I'm planning on borrowing the ebook Hunger Games for some christmas reading.
Just saw this... if you have an officemax store near you, you can get $100 in Kindle giftcards for $80 or $75 in Kindle gift cards for only $60. Or if you want the Kindle Fire, you can get it for $180 (save $20). You have to buy the gift cards today, though. November 19th.

I am thinking of asking for one for Christmas and I LOVE that new little one for $79! Do any of you ladies have one? How do you like it? Do you use it alot? Pros? Cons?
