@missjz:  Sometimes when people say “You look great today” or ” Your hair looks great today”, my natural inclination is to wonder how I looked yesterday.

“Did you lose weight!?”

Because then when I gain a little I am paranoid that the person notices and is keeping a running tally on how fat I am.

@julies1949:  haha same! Or like “you look like you’ve lost weight!” … Was I fat before?? Might be ridiculous, but I can’t help it!

@julies1949: Yes, I gave the same thought too, if someone says something like that.

My non-English speaking grandmother is famous for the line… “You look strong!”

Now, that is a direct translation. But in reality it means more along the lines of “You look sturdy.” And it is meant as a compliment.

However, she says this when you’ve packed on a few pounds. This is the sort of European household where they look at you, unless you’re medically overweight, and say “Gee, you’re so skinny. Eat something!”

It has to be the worst compliment ever, especially since she totally means it as a compliment.

my friends call me Ano (as in anorexia) – let me tell u im NOT ano, im tall and slim but i eat A LOT and im more muscly than skinny, so it really grinds my gears. i know its cos they are all overweight so say things like “i cant wait to be ano like you” but it pisses me off to no end.

“Omgosh! That hairstyle makes you look so much younger!” – said in excited positive tone. I got this “compliment” at 29 and was like, “Uh… did I look that old or something?”

I hate it when I am talking to girls and we are just chatting about girl stuff and I bring up how I need to focus on eating healthy now to start getting toned for our wedding and the first thing they say in the fakest voice ever is “omg, you’re so skinny though, you don’t need to lose weight!” >:| Just hush. You don’t see me naked, you have no opinion. I mean, I’d be upset if they agreed with me so I guess there is no making me happy! Haha. Stupid girl problems.

When people are surprised that I have super thick coarse blonde hair and fair skin and blue eyes. And I tell them I’m Dutch and also Native American. And they say “oh that explains the cheekbones!” …….thank you? I think?

@missjz:  “You’re so skinny!”

It sounds like I look unhealthy or something. I’m trim or lean maybe, but certainly not gaunt looking or emaciated. I feel strong. I see muscles rather than bones.
