We just created a Destination Weddings board!
http://boards.weddingbee.com/board/destination-weddings
Any DW brides out there? Where are you getting married? :-)
Yayyy!! Thank you so much for this board! :D
My wedding is kinda sorta a destination wedding. It will be in Puerto Rico (at the Arecibo Observatory!!) because I'm Puerto Rican and my whole family lives there, but fiance is from the US and his whole family is too, so for our wedding ~half the guests will be local and ~half the guests will be traveling. And since we live in the US too and we're planning from all the way over here, the wedding is more 'destination' than local for us too!
Thank you! Thank you for creating this new board! We are getting married in Jamaica next year.
Yay!! Thank you for this board!! Anyone out there having a non-beach destination wedding? We're having a "destination/vacation" wedding. We decided to get married out in the mountians of Jackson Hole, one of our favorite places. We're saving the beach for the honeymoon!
Thank you for this new board. No beach here. We're getting married in the valley of Yosemite Nat'l Park.
Ours will either be close by in ATL, but for all our guests it would be a destination wedding (all our family is pretty much 99 percent oot) or else we will do a destination wedding at the beach or mountains (vineyard).
*waves wildly* Yay for destination brides! We are getting married in Yosemite!!
Here too! Getting married in FL with 99% of our guests from the West Coast!
Ooh, me too Bubbly!
Looks like just us and the parents! Where in HI Bubbly?
Oahu seems best in terms of diverse things to do. FI has been to Maui and said it's too romantic for him, HA!
It's a destination for me and a mini-destination for most guests: Bloomington, Indiana :)
YEAH!!! I have been waiting for this board! Thanks!
We are getting married in North Carolina on the beach in 1 month and 1 day! (wow! that's really soon!!!)
We are too! We're going on a cruise and getting married in the Cayman Islands!
Moonie - we're getting married in Oahu, too. I love it there. Ours will likely be a very small wedding as well - immediate families and close friends. I'm hoping everyone that I really want to be there will be able to make it. I guess that's the drawback of the destination wedding.
I haven't been to Maui, but have heard wonderful things.
Fantastic! I'm hoping to learn much from this board! Just got engaged over the long weekend and now in search for the venue. My Fiance is advocating a desination wedding...we just don't know where yet! Looking forward to reading more!
isn't a bit difficult flying blind, i.e. planning and not being there?
it's a little overwhelming, don't even know where to start!
btw, congratulations everyone!
it is definitely interesting planning from a distance and making most of your decisions based on telephone calls and websites! we are getting married in red lodge montana - near yellowstone park. we visited a couple months ago and were pretty happy with the choices in vendors we had made... so here's hoping the last couple months go smoothly as well! what is everyone doing with their wedding 'projects' like favors, programs, decorations, etc. i feel like with all the stuff i'm bringing, including my gown and honeymoon stuff, we will be bringing a million things to the airport! but i'm scared to part with my favors or decorations and ship them out to our hotel in advance... what if they get lost!
Yeah for destination brides! I just had my destination wedding last Friday at St. George Island, FL. We had 45 of our closest family and friends come from all over and it was the best week of our lives. We ate and drank and laughed and cried and loved! It was completely fabulous. The weather held off for our ceremony on the beach and the reception went off without a hitch! I honestly would not have changed a thing.
We started by taking a trip down there to explore the area. Made an appointment with a wedding planner while we were there and booked a beach house where we had all the events for the weekend. We asked around to the locals while we were there and made all our contacts that way. It seemed like it was all meant to be because it worked out perfect from every angle.
Family and friends were able to see us finally getting married (after 8 years) and they got an awesome vacation out of it. I will say they all pitched in to help cook and clean but they got to eat and drink every meal on us for free so it was a fair trade.
Please feel free to message me if anyone has any questions. Best of Luck to all those in the planning stage, it is so worth it!
BonnieBon - congrats!! Sounds like a fantastic wedding. Nice to hear!
Moonie - yes, it is definitely challenging to plan things from afar. There are some good suggestions re: vendors on the Hawaii board.
The one good thing about planning from a distance is that it forces you to let go of the outcome, and to trust that your wedding day is going to be perfect whatever happens, because it's an expression of your love for each other.
It is so easy to get caught up in the details and not enjoy the day. I watched this happen to my sister three years ago. She has always been into DIY projects, and likes everything to be perfect (not in a Bridezilla way, but she has descriminating taste and a good eye for design). In the end, her wedding was gorgeous, but caused her so much stress that she started fighting - big time - with my brother-in-law. They are a great couple and love each other very much, but the planning ate them alive for a while. They are ok now, but my sister still has regrets about how the wedding went. She specifically warned me to learn to let go of expectations - especially for a destination wedding.
I just hope I don't go too far the other way. Knock on wood that there isn't a ranting post from me in a year, complaining about how my wedding sucked. :)
Hi all! I'm planning on a destination wedding...destination unknown! :)
Right now, we're looking at Florida beaches...anyone have some suggestions? We're planning on a small party (20 people including the bride and groom)...any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
@ BonnieBon - I'll be on St. George island this weekend!!! Too bad I couldn't make it - just kidding!! The island place is gorgeous!! Please post pictures of your wedding when you have a chance.
We are getting married in Vegas! The planning has been a breeze because we bought a package at the hotel. Just about everything is included, and the coordinator is wonderful. Our reception is at a restaurant inside the hotel, again, we have another coordinator who is handling the details.
I work full time and go to grad school full time; wedding planning does not fit into my schedule very well. Although it seems a little weird planning a wedding without actually seeing anything seems weird, I have confidence things will be fine.
I may be slightly biased, but destination weddings are the way to go! I honestly believe that I wouldn't have enjoyed our wedding in Chicago as much as I did in Jamaica. It was PERFECT!
Destination, all the way!!
Hi Ladies...I had a destination wedding last year in Cabo! I had a great time, it was the best idea ever! I used this site http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/index.php?referrerid=1471 and it was so fun to chat with everyone about their ideas...just FYI.
Getting Married in Jamaica in May of 2010. Leaving in a few weeks to go to Jamaica to see about where we would like to stay, as well as for a vacation of course! Congrats to all the brides to be.
We are have a destination wedding....kind of. We are from western NC, but we are getting married at Topsail beach. We met there 6 years ago, and just think it it too perfect! We wanted to invite our family and friends and have a great time on the beach and have a vacay at the same time. We plan on getting married on a Saturday, and then staying there with our closest friends for the rest of the week. We are going to save for a bigger honeymoon to be taken later. We already live together, with all of our friends spread around the state and don't get to see them often, so we just thought it would be a great way to spend time with them. We are looking into the HUGE houses at Topsail Island. We are just asking our friends to help pay for the house, but we are providing food and drinks and things like that. It is very hard to plan when it is 5 hours away, but I love to do projects and am very crafty, so we are doing sooo many diy projects!! I am very excited about all of it!! I am glad to see there are other Destination Weddings taking place, esp in todays economy!!!! Good Luck planning!!! And if anybody needs any inspiration on diy...just let me know!!!!
I'm so excited about this board. I'm getting married June 2010 in Negril, Jamiaca and I've had such a hard time finding good DW boards and blogs. Thanks Mr and Mrs. Bee!!!
Yay, a DW board! I agree with Quiche, I am SO glad we did a destination wedding! It ended up being a big vacation with 75 of our closest friends and family. The wedding was over two months ago, but our guests are still talking about it! I'm glad we made everyone take a Caribbean vacation with us :)
We're having a DW in Glacier Nat'l Park - so excited! But one thing I worry about is the environmental impact. We're having only 17 guests, but everyone is flying. We want to be as green as possible, so I feel guilty about having a DW. Does anyone feel the same way? What are you doing about it? I'm thinking of planting trees or carbon offsetting in leu of favors.
yay another Cancun bride here :) 34 of our close friends & family flew in from Taiwan, China, Japan, US and Canada to celebrate our big day. It was fabulous!
Would be happy to share my experience with everyone here. ^_^
We are packing for our Australia wedding as I write this.
FH is actually geeking out by prepping my new laptap and I am happily watching.
Our destination wedding is taking place in Adelaide, South Australia. Actually, just south of there in a little town called Sellicks Beach. The only people in attendance will be us, the celebrant, the owners of the church venue (www.thehundredeaves.com.au - which is a church but also a bistro by night), a bagpiper and two photographers. We are having a fairly traditional christian wedding and carrying an insane amount of wedding related items as "carry on" - my dress being the heaviest but also I'll come back to let you know how indestructable a Maggie Sottero dress really is as it has already endured a flight from Portland to Houston and today is headed to Australia. We'll see what fairs better, a tux or a maggie.
Our day really will be about us and I don't have the worry about trying to make sure everyone else is going to be ok but rather get to enjoy the entire day as our wedding day.
We're getting married here in Maine - on the beach or at a lighthouse. I'd love to get married on an island or in the South on a beach but half of our family (my side) has to travel over here from Germany...and if we would get married somewhere else, then EVERYONE would have to travel...too expensive. So we thought Maine is beautiful too and we just hope that the weather will be nice. :-) I'm so excited already!
Woot! I just stumbled onto this board. We are getting married in the Riviera Maya on Dec 11, 2010!!
Hey DW peeps!
We're set to marry on Oct 17, 2009 in Newport, Oregon. We live in Seattle and our families are in Idaho, Washington and the Bay Area so it is a nice in between locale, plus we love the coast.
It is weird to plan from afar. My mom and I are traveling to OR this weekend to check out some different things. For the most part, I've been looking at websites and calling people. I can't imagine what it would have been like planning a wedding, especially a DW, Pre- Internet!
More and more, I'm now leaning towards to Cabo. Any Cabo brides out there? Where did you choose?
My fiance and I are getting married in Ochos Rios, Jamaica in December....I can't wait!!
