I'm attempting to do the 17 Day Diet in the first stage, which is mostly eat whatever vegetables and lean proteins you like, 2 servings of low-sugar fruits and 2 servings of pro-biotics and drink your weight in water each day. The hardest part is managing my coffee addiction. By sticking to the prescribed regimen, I'm only allowed 1 cup per day. My goal is really to learn better eating habits and increase my fitness, but hey, if I could shed a few pounds to start, that would be really fantastic.

FI on the other hand- is a-whole-nother story. I mean, I do the majority of the cooking, so for most meals he's stuck eating what I cook. I'm sitting next to him eating my bowl of broccoli as he opens a bag of cheese curls. He always looks fantastic no matter what, has no problem areas (*cough* muffin top that I'd like to get rid of). Happy for him, but kind of jealous at the same time. Anyone else in this boat??

ugh, i hear ya on this. i count my calories at every meal and measure out exactly what i need to eat, and he gets to wing it, stuffing his face. i thought of asking him to count his calories with me, but i don't really know what that would do besides confirm that he can eat 2x as much as me and still be tiny (don't even get me started on how i weigh MORE than him...)

yes! It drives me crazy, I am ALWAYS dieting, and he is ALWAYS eating! I have heard that the 17 day diet really works!

The other day, I was sitting there peacefully drinking my Body By Vi shake, and I walk into the living room and FI has a box of Lindor chocolates, My favorite, and then has the nerve to offer me one!! He can eat ANYTHING without gaining a pound, me on the other hand would gain a pound just from eating one chocolate! So frusterating!

They all usually gain eventually as they age ...just wait!

Been there, I know its super frusterating. Maybe they just don't worry and obsess as much as us therefore making it easier to keep cortisol levels down and things in balance.

Perhaps. He's definitely more of a Type B kind of person. That cortisol is a royal pain in the backside. I stress so easily Frown I've not usually been the type to stress-eat, but when I was with him, the eating kind of just got away from me. Finals didn't help either, late night eating and such... Oh well, just keep swimming I guess :)

Yes, completely! It's so easy to let my portion sizes balloon when he can happilly chow down 2 or 3 times as much as I should be eating.

Curious, why are you having to restrict your coffee intake? Is it because of adding the sugar/milk?

@Jade33:Sorry, I should clarify. The author states that it's permitted, but phrased it as "negative water." Staying adequately hydrated allows the kidneys to function more properly. Coffee, as a natural ligand for anti-diuretic hormone, makes your body let go of more water than maybe it would otherwise. At least I think that's the reasoning. 1-2 cups per day is allowed. I'm just used to drinking a lot more. I'm slowly acclimating to the green tea, though.

@colli459:Interesting, thank you for clarifying. Doesn't green tea also have caffeine in it, though? I love my 3-4 cups per day, I'm sure I should cut back on the 2tsp of sugar that goes in every cup (!) but I would need a very good reason to go without the coffee, it's a wunderfood!

I don't mean to derail your diet in any way I'm just curious, & think it so cruel to go without that maybe you could still be fine with a few extra cups?? (:

@Jade33: Hahahahaha. Thanks so much. You definitely made me smile. It's certainly a wonderfood! I donno, ever since I started pharm school I've been pretty addicted to the stuff. I know you don't have any malicious intent. If nothing else, the diet is teaching me to get creative with my cooking and look up recipes I may never have tried before. It's working out well so far :)

OMG mine is so awesome about this!  He's given up all the foods that I can't eat, and there's even a six pack UN-TOUCHED in the fridge so he can "suffer along with me".  He did turn to me over dinner (plain grilled fish and salad) last night and say "this is over after our trip right?"

god this is such crap!!! my SO is that way. there was a period of time where he gained like a good 40 lbs. it was quite the gain for him. then one day he's like eh im gonna lose weight. to which i rolled my eyes because it takes him little to no effort. he just cut back a little and went to work everyday as usual and now he's back to his normal fit self. do you realize how long i have struggled to lose weight? its like permanently glued onto my body. but for him, he just woke up one day like hmmm maybe ill get rid of 40 lbs now, and then did it without even trying. i actually cried to him one day during one of my not so great dieting days. i was eating cucumber slices while he sat with the bag of doritos. combine pms, hunger, and exhaustion and a meltdown is what you get. he got it. big time. i was like a disturbed 2 year old ugly face crying on the couch with my bowl of cucumber slices.....it. was. awesome.

    To follow up with everyone,

@MissNoodles: Not fair, your FI sounds awesome. Honestly, mine is pretty good about it, but not nearly as good as yours.

@stardustintheeyes: Eep. Yeah, I know a lot of people that would really enjoy being able to mental their way through 40 lbs. Good gracious! Reminds me that I should probably eat my cucumber slices....

@GroovyHippieChick: Agreed on not missing a meal in my life. 1) I really <3 food. 2) Honestly I get reeeeeally hungry...

    Last night's dinner:

I'm crunching on my salad while he makes a ham and turkey sandwich with mayo and cheese coupled with potato chips. Later in the night he follows it up with Apple chips while I drink my kefir milk. At least the kefir milk is yummy. I swear some day I'll find my positive attitude...

If this were me, I'd tell him to eat his cheese curls somewhere else! Like maybe in the car, or at work, but not in front of me. I really think I started overeating in the first place because I try to keep up with FH when he eats big portions of the foods I like.

@MissNoodles: aww, your FI is too cute. I wish my SO would eat the same things. He doesn't eat any veggies at all!!!

It's soooo hard chowing down on ANOTHER salad while he's eating poutine..... Grrrrrr.

*laughs* I know! Logically, part of me is aware that he naturally requires more calories and his body processes different foods better than I do but it is still frustrating!

Though to be honest, he gained like 10 lbs since us being together :P He blames me food which he says is too delish! Hahahahah! I was brought up with food being a way to express love so... :P We are working on improving our health and lifestyle for the long haul though so it isn't too bad thus far, we have lost about 10lbs each the last 2 months.

*grins* Good thing too! Only 5.5months to the big day! He is happy his tummy shrinking and while I dont see dramatic change to my shape, it satisfying to know Im lighter.

Oh I hate it.  Mostly because he is the cook in the relationship. He is a fantastic cook, but not always the most healthy. He always includes a salad or some sort of vegetable, but he loves cream sauces and rich foods.  And then he dishes me up a huuuuge portion and sadly it's usually so good I end up eating most of it :(  It's taking a lot of discipline to stick to my 6 small meals a day

Oh I definitely relate to this. My FI has such a fast metabolism that he can eat his weight in food and still be in danger of being underweight.

If I eat a few carbs more than I should...I could gain a whole pound in one day! I swear.

It's hard for me to be around him when he eats a whole pizza or snacks on chips, etc...

I have been resentful of his eating habits for three years now since I started my healthy living in 2008. It is soooo hard to watch him eat candy, cookies, chips and drink soda well into the night while I must resist. I will say that it does get less tempting as time goes by but seriously I wish he would just give up too and make my life a lot easier.

I had the opposite problem!!! My FH was on the 17 day diet (he lost 41 lbs in 3.5 months by the way, congrats, it's a great diet) and I was not and he would make me feel bad about what I ate. GRRR. I was soooo frustrated!!! I'm really sensitive so he would just remind me that it's unhealthy for me and I would just feel awful all day.

    I'm now on a different diet=) and he isn't.

We have both put on some unwanted weight since being together - University lifestyle meant a lot of junk food/ takeout/ alcohol! I started eating healthy and working out (EA Active on the Wii) 4 months ago and I lost just over 15lbs! Now that the wedding is less then 5 months away (YAYYYY!) he's decided to jump on board. Now we are both doing EA Active 2 (on PS3) and eating healthy... Soooooo much easier with him doing it too, definitely motivation! Bought my dress last weekend! And fits great! But had a corset back to accommodate the rest of my (hopeful) weight loss! :)

@andersonsarah:  Oh dear, I'm sorry that your FI made you feel guilty about it. I try really hard not to do that unless it's in jest and he's fully aware that he's eating something not so great for him.

@MrsBadluck:  Oh boy... That's like dropping the weight of both my cats combined without trying. I'd be frustrated too!

@thanlon_88:  That's awesome that you two have been able to find something to do together to help to improve yourselves! Mine tries to go to the gym with me once in a while, but sometimes he asks me if he can skip. Overall, he's still pretty supportive.

Thanks for all the wonderful responses, ladies! I really appreciate it!

My FH can't diet with me since he'd shrivel up into nothingness! He has a hard time gaining weight, even with all the sweets he eats infront of me! I started the 17 day diet 19 days ago, and I've lost 15 pounds already without following it to a tee (I dont drink 3 cups of green tea a day, and I dont always exercise). I love how it's made me start looking at labels closer. I must admit, FH is trying to cook healthier though!

It is totally not true that they'll all gain weight as they age.

My fiance is 33 and weighs 123 lbs at 5'7". We got engaged in December and I immediately started working out 6 days a week, eating out only once a week (what I call Fatty Friday), cooking extremely healthy, and counting calories. At the same time, my fiance decides that he also wants to look his best for our wedding and develops a plan to gain weight. So I'm taking in 1200 calories per day and he has to take in 2800. I fully support him in his effort to gain weight, but packing our lunches at night it's quite difficult when mine contains an assortment of healthy snacks and yogurt and his is made up of cookies, chips, peanut butter crackers, etc.

When I starting dating my fiance, we would go to breakfast buffets and get frozen yogurt all the time.  By the time we got engaged I had gained 25 pounds and wanted to lose it.

So we stopped getting pizza and seeing movies on the weekend and would take walks in the park instead.  He lost 5 pounds, I gained 5 pounds.

I started eating soup at lunch while he continues to go to Taco Bell.  He lost 5 pounds, I gained 5 pounds.

I started eating smaller meals every 4 hours to rev up my metabolism, and we started riding bicycles together.  My starvation headaches are gone, but he lost 5 pounds, and I gained Another 5 Pounds!

So now I have 40 pounds to lose :(  I feel like I'm depriving myself and still gaining weight, while he just makes a few compromises and loses weight like it's nothing! Grrr!

It's kinda the opposite with us... lol. I have a high metabolism and lose weight easily. DH does not. So we'll be eating the same diet and working out together and I'll see results he doesn't. :P Although I've totally been with guys who can eat whatever they want... it was a pain!

I have the same problem. Since moving in with my fiance I have gained about 10 lbs. I've tried dieting, but since he needs to eat more than I do it's hard to cook for me and cook something for him. He says I don't need to cook for him, but I feel weird making food just for myself. It gives me the "roommate" feeling instead of the "wifely" feeling I have when I cook for both of us.

I guess the only good thing is I stay full longer than he does. I try to tune out his snacking at night, but it's not always easy. I've gotten back into the habit of working out recenly though. I go over to my sister's and we do workout DVDs. My finace even comes along sometimes too and works out with us to show his support for me losing weight to be happy.

I have also made a commitment on stickk.com to lose 20 lbs in 16 weeks.
