So, Im a dispatcher for the ambulance service. I hate it. Been there for around 3 years. Its incredibly high stress, long shift work hours and horrible people. Everyone is so mean to each other and always out to get each other in crap. Mainly I stay out of it and just go about my work but recently just the idea of going to work raises by blood pressure – recently 170/110 (im 26!!) I have shocking anxiety and have started to get palpatations the night before a dayshift! Ugh, its horrible.
Would love to hear from someone in a similar role or circumstance that has found away to enjoy the job again??

@MeeShell: aww that sucks.. So just clarifying youre a paramedic? I know what you mean, im an emergency RN have been for 3 years so far and its all i know. High stress and long CRAZY hours (just come back from a 12 hour). You kinda sound like before i did the following:
– took leave for about a week. Did nothing but pamper and enjoy myself
– dropped ny hours to 64 hrs/fortnight..
– start talking to other people in terms of how they felt about work.
unfortunately in our clinical setting, its part of the job to be stressed but!!! It really doesnt help that the people at work are mean. Im lucky cos even tho we have some douches at work there are more lovely people.
not sure if this can be done in nz, but is there another ambulance service you can transfer to? Or is it mainly the job and type of work that gets you?
can i jst say how much i admire paramedics! Yes we also see blood and guts and shock peoples hearts but you guys are in the front line, you seriously dont know what will happen out in an uncontrolled environment! That requires bravery…

I feel fo you, I’m not a dispatcher but my girlfriend is and your experience sounds so similar to hers. She hates the job but the money is so good I don’t think she would be able to find another job that will pay her as much. It’s like a double punch because you have the stress of the job & the stress of the people. I don’t have any advice for you really but you should be focusing on your health. I hope you feel better (((hugs))))

My MOH is (police/fire/EMS dispatcher) and she’s looking to get out. She’s waiting until she locks in her pension to leave. She hated working nights, hated that she was forced to cover for people who took time off or when they quit, hated the stress of the calls, etc. She actually applied on a whim, since she was 20 at the time with zero experience, but got the job and made good money (bought and completely renovated a house). She kept going to school, graduated, and has done a million other things since, but she really wants to get out and be a personal trainer.

@MeeShell: I am a police dispatcher! I used to work in an environment similar to yours but left for a smaller department with less drama. Not really my dream job but the money is good and I have found my passion as a wedding planner, so I also do that on the side ( my planner hired me on for contract work). I feel you though, my Fiancé still works at the place I left and he hates it. Everyone is so dramatic and out to get one another! It’s absolutely ridiculous! He has been searching for a new job for over a year now since he graduated but cannot seem to land a job that ISNT dispatching though he has a biology degree 🙁 I really hate that he has to deal with that stress, especially when the job is stressful at times in itself!

@princessggg: Thanks for your reply. Im a dispatcher for the amb so not out on the frontline, although I think id prefer that. Iv just come off 5 weeks of annual leave (wedding and honeymoon) which was amazing! I came back to work refreshed and happy and that was all ruined within a day. Unfortunately theres only the 1 ambulance service in NZ so im pretty stuck for now. It can be a very rewarding job but my goodness its stressful!
@tcgstar: Thanks for the empathy! I feel for your friend 🙁 thats the case for me also, they pay well! I dont have a college degree or any other qualifications so finding other employment is difficult without taking a 15k pay cut and with our mortgage and TTC itd be terrible timing to do that!
@vorpalette: Isnt it strange that all over the world the role brings all the same downfalls. I never used to mind nightshifts but they are really getting me down at the mo. Iv temproarily been moved onto all day shifts to try sort my blood pressure.
@misschickpea: Oh gosh I imagine Police dispatching would be super similar! Im trying to get into the auditing department at the mo to reduce some stress and get out of the toxic environment! How awesome about your wedding planning, thats the ideal outcome huh. Your very lucky to be doing something that you have a passion for!
@Anna10-05-2014: Your so right, it is very rewarding. I try a keep in mind that although I dont enjoy the role im helping someone get the the medical help they need. Just wish I had a bit more of a passion for it! Do you enjoy your role at fire?

@MeeShell: I absolutely love my job 🙂 some days are more of a struggle, but all in all, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
