I recieved my dress in Dec., (Justin Alexander 8557). The store told me I needed to order a size up from what I tried on due to it being a store sample and stretched out. Well since then I have lost about 20 pounds, unfortunetly most of it in my chest.
I went to have my first fitting and got a bad vibe from the seamstress the moment I walked in. The first thing she did when she saw my dress was tell me I needed to out straps on it because no one looks good in strapless. I politely told her I wanted to keep it strapless and went to try it on. As I figured it was a bit loose in the bust area but I figured we could either take it in or maybe add padded cups.
She looked at me for a minute and said there is no way anyone could make the dress look good on me but if I wanted I could try somewhere else because she wasn’t going to lose sleep over it. Cut to me standing in my dream dress crying while my mom tries to hurry me out of there.
I have an appointment somewhere else next week but until then I am freaking out that now I’m stuck with a dress I can’t wear. So I guess the point of this rambling is to find someone else that has been turned away from a steamstress and had it work out. Did I just pick someone that sucks? Maybe someone on here has also had issues with their bustline? Sorry for such a long post!
Also this is what my dress looks like.

MelBan: Two-time MOB here. And I heard what you said, at every gown store: “The store told me I needed to order a size up from what I tried on due to it being a store sample and stretched out.”
They did it to my 1st daughter to marry, and she had to have the top section taken-in 2 times. When we got around to my 2nd daughter getting married, I put my foot down.
P.S. Your dress doesn’t seem to be overly intricate, or beaded, on the top. I don’t see any reason why any good seamstress couldn’t take it in correctly.

What a terrible woman! wow! Absolutely you just picked someone who sucks. Find another seamstress and I’m sure everything will be fine. I’m so sorry this happened to you.

Your dress is beautiful and I’m sure it will look gorgeous on you! You just need to find a good seamstress who can do the job without putting you down!!!

MelBan: Wow. That seamstress straight up sucks. It’s for the best that she sent you somewhere else, because she is clearly not a person who should be working with people or wedding dresses. You’ll find a competent seamstress and everything will be okay! My maid of honor got married a year before me and her seamstress had to do a number on her dress! My MOH is a size 8 through the hips and a size 2 in the bust, so she had to order the size 8 gown and have the bust altered. She looked fabulous and you’d never guess she had so many alterations done to the dress. It can be done! 🙂
Don’t stress about what this nasty alterations lady said to you. You are going to look great in your gown and you will find someone who not only knows what they are doing, but knows how to interact with people in a positive way.
Here’s the size 8 to size 2 top:
You will be fine. I had to order a dress in a size 8 to fit my hips/thighs but the top part of me is small like a size 4 so they took out a ton to make the top fit and it was not a problem at all. Add a built in bra and some padding and you will be fine. Remember you want it to be comfortable and to stay up and most seamstresses can do that without a problem. You just picked a bad apple.

That is awful! It’s a beautiful dress and doesn’t look like it should be too hard to alter. I hope your new seamstress is helpful. Try searching on Yelp for reviews of her as well as others. I’m sure you can find someone good! In fact, while you’re on Yelp write a negative review of that seamstress. How ridiculous!

dresses can be taken in or let out 2 whole sizes. Im sure a better and more polite seamstress will fi it perfectly for you!!!! I wouldn’t worry. Any dress can be taken in. If its reallllllly big the alteration fee might be pretty high, but from the sounds of it it’s not like you’re swimming in it. Fear not!

Thank you so much everyone! You have definitely helped calm my nerves. Now I just need to convince my MOH to not stop down there and give her a lesson on customer service, she takes her role very seriously!

MelBan: go somewhere else. She clearly doesnt know what she is doing, isnt comfortable or doesnt want to do the work. Go somewhere else. It is so possible to have it taken in.
