    Oooh, nice!

I'd like to take up hunting, but I'm not quite keen on the idea of processing just yet.

I think that once I'm less affected by blood/guts/poop, I'll look into getting my license and taking it up.

I don't, but I would love to run Elk Camp and pack out whatever the hunters take on my horse!  One of these years it will happen....  And congrats to your fiancee!

@ surkim; that was kinda odd for me at first too; but it no longer bothers me. I make sure I wear gloves & I'm good to go. I love it. It's been such an amazing experience. You just have to try it.....

@caitlanc; that would be an awesome trip! We are hoping to actually go elk hunting for a few days on our honeymoon.....!!

Okay; so I didn't know if I should post a picture; but I'm going to.

I hunt with FI.  He's the one that got me into it.  I haven't gone so much this year but I love archery hunting.

Thank you for warning about the picture inside -- that's very thoughtful :o)

I'm a huge animal lover and don't agree with hunting (to each their own, though) and a Facebook friend posted a picture of her BF and a deer he just killed on the main page of Facebook!  I was horrified.

I'm a vegetarian, so I obviously don't hunt :)  But I'd just like to say that if you are going to eat meat, I think it's GREAT that you are killing it yourself.  (I'm from an area with a lot of hunters).  A lot of people don't realize where their meat comes from and how it gets to their table.  So if you are willing to go out and get your food yourself, I would much prefer people do that to factory farms or massive slaughterhouses.

@ hotchild; I know there are many people who feel this way. I tried to crop out as much as possible.

But for those that are interested in Hunting; I couldn't help but share. It's a once in a Lifetime Buck for around here!

I love animals too, it's not about just going out to kill an animal.  The deer we get feed us all year long.  I save a lot of money at the grocery store not having to buy beef!  (and it's a lot less greasy)

I don't hunt, but I used to be a park ranger and worked hunt control...does this count? ;)

As a vegetarian, it was a bit weird taking deer jaw bones, and lymphnodes for data collection.  I used to be anti-hunting, but after I fi=ound several deer starved to death from lack of food and overcrowding? Well, suddenly hunting looked a whole lot different to me. I don't know if I could ever hunt (I lack patience) but I support those who do.

There are no natural predators left for deer (unless you count cars) and I guess I'd just really perfer that a family be fed than a deer starve to death. Also, at the refuge I worked at the hunters often donated meat to shelters through a program called farmers and hunters for the hungry (or something like it).

@LacyLust: I am a huge hunter! I have killed a 12 pt and an 11pt, my 11 scored 138...but I had to put the gun away for a few years because of our club rules that you can only kill bigger than your last or you have to mount it...Mounts aren't cheap! My little 6 year old brother killed a 10pt last year and had an article written about he and I! It was too cute! I went all last weekend and I missed a coyote...damn thing was running and my dad's 300 mag was a bit too powerful.

What did your FI's deer score? Do you hunt too?

@ dorsay; yes i've heard of that program. We've actually filled our tags (& freezers) for this year. We are now going to a more southern area of our state in 2 weeks & any deer that we can harvest there we will donate to Ohio's hunters for the hungry. & it is true. I think that a lot of people do not realize how large the population is. But that's a whole different conversation. I don't want to start the debate on hunting. Because it can get brutal. I was just curious to meet any fellow lady hunters!!! So glad there are a few here!! & I can imagine as a vegetarian that would have been an odd job.

@pec1216; yes I do hunt too. I've got 2 bucks now. My first with shotgut my second was last year with my bow. I've been hunting 4 or 5 years or so. We also hunt waterfowl. FI's buck was just shot last night. Not sure how it scores yet; game warder is guessing around 170. We'll find out soon! He'll be getting it mounted for the other side of the fireplace!!

@ LacyLust: Wow! That's awesome! Yeah we have a deer room at my dad's and it has all of ours on the wall. I love it but some people find it scary. I was raised by my dad so I grew up hunting deer and turkeys and dove and such... Ohio would be a great place to hunt. My dream would be to send my dad on a trip somewhere to hunt.

Yeah; Ohio is a pretty great area for deer. Especially Southern Parts. We are more in NW ohio so we usually stay here for the week of gun season and then it comes back in for a weekend 2 weeks later and we head to southern ohio. It's always fun. But usually Freezing!

Down here in Alabama we face the opposite problem...it has been in the 60s for the past few days and it's just too warm for them to move. I'm ready for the cold!

YES!!!! I do!!!! I actually shot my first buck when I was 7 months pregnant a couple years ago. I grew up hunting, and LOVE it! On Sunday I was able to rattle a 4x4 buck in that my SO got to shoot! (Wish I could have, but at least we got him!) I'm very tomboy :) I hunt (deer, elk, shoot gophers, coyotes, birds, etc) and fish, hike, camp, 4-wheel, dirt bike, I do it all! I live in MT though, so we are surrounded by mountains!

I don't hunt and I hate the taste of venison, but I don't have a problem with hunting.  Where I grew up (small town in Colorado) a huge portion of the town suplimented their food/diets with venison.  I would be highly against hunting just for the sport of it, but everyone I have ever known who has hunted actually "needed" to hunt and used hunting season as a time to stock up their freezers to have enough food to get them through the year.

I hunt too! I grew up with it and have been helping with the processing since I was very young.  My FI has always been into shooting guns, but I just got him into hunting this year.  I find that hunting can be a great way to spend time with family and to enjoy the outdoors.

As a vegetarian, I no longer hunt. But I grew up hunting. I started out as a toddler, as soon as I could walk on my own without needing to be carried, my dad started taking me into the woods. I have my own guns and knives, but they are all in my dad's possession as I have no need for them any longer. After I killed my first deer and cried the whole time I was gutting, hauling, and hanging it, I decided that maybe I should follow my heart, give up meat, and stop hunting. I am not anti-hunting though. If you kill the deer to eat it, I am on your side. As a society we are too far removed from our food sources. Knowing you killed and gutted the meat on your table is important I think. Plus, venison, from what I remember, is delicious! :D I am, however, very against people who kill deer or other animals simply as trophies! If you are going to kill an animal, make more use of it then a head on your wall. If nothing else, the meat should be donated to the local homeless shelter or food pantry or soup kitchen!

    @MrsK2Be: I'm from Lima/Wapakoneta Area. Yourself?

@rabbit: I don't know many Hunters who are only in it for the "Trophies." They're aren't many people who just throw away meat & keep the Head to mount on the wall. I'm sure there are some but Not many.

I only hunt dove or duck. I don't think I have it in me to kill anything else. My husband is a HUGE hunter (and fisherman), though, and I do go sit with him from time to time. I love love love venison and have been making chili like crazy lately. We are in Florida, too, which means smaller and fewer deer in general, although we also have a lease in GA. He also pheasant hunts a lot in South Dakota. I love having the freezer stocked with wild game!

And for those of you who think most hunters are just in it for a trophy, I can tell you I know a ton of hunters, and I can't think of one who treats it like that. I don't know anyone that doesn't process and eat the meat from their kill.

Also, most people don't realize that almost all of the money that funds wildlife protection areas as well as helping to improve populations of animals that are dwindling, comes from hunting permit sales and the like. Without the money from hunters, the government has a lot less to pull from to help protect the animals that actually need protecting.

I'm not a hunter but all of the menfolk on hubby's side are avid hunters. They hunt only for meat and whatever they harvest is shared equally between the families. Quite frankly, I rather eat game than supermarket meat any day.Yes I am aware of the horrible treatment suffered by the animals that end up as meat at the supermarket and hunting, IMO,  is a far more humane (and natural) way of obtaining meat.  I must say that I do despise trophy hunting which is rampant in my area. Killing a beautiful animal just to mount their head on the wall and leaving the rest of the animal behind to rot seems gross and wasteful - especially since the local food banks will gratefully accept donations.
