I searched for a thread about this here, but it was a really old thread. But I’m pretty sure I’ve seen other bees talk about this. I’ve been looking into different freelance opportunities, and have started writing short articles for a pretty popular online site. I was just wondering if any bees do this, or know someone that does? I enjoy writing quite a bit, and I’m looking to make some extra money!!

I was a freelancer for a particular site for 2.5 years and enjoyed it while it lasted–it was good money and my byline was on every article (and still is). Unfortuantely, it was work-for-hire and while that didn’t bother me at the time, I wish I had asked for reprint rights after x amount of time in the beginning so I could republish some of those articles, now. But even then, it was still a good experience.

@Miss Road Trip: I’ve been looking through a lot of different sites, but just trying to weed through them all!

@roweboat: I do when my full-time job doesn’t have me too busy.
I’ve contributed to Yahoo! Voices, but how much you get paid is a crapshoot. And I contribute to a local magazine. I’ve heard of elance and odesk but haven’t tried it. There’s also textbroker.

I write for a couple of sights semi-regularly. Nothing paid, though :-/ I’d love to submit for Cracked but their Writers Workshop terrifies me. The critiques can be kind of brutal and i’m a softy about my work.

Have you looked into writing for About.com? It’s decent money. It’s great if you’re a writer while also having expertise in something else, because they usually require that you know a lot about the subject you’re writing about. I write for my city’s About.com page.

@roweboat: I do a lot of consulting work on the side (marcomm is my field, so a lot of it is writing). I enjoy it a lot 🙂

I have been a “contributing writer” for a particular site for three years and love it. I’ve done some other freelance writing (check out elance). The particular site I work for is related to one of my areas of study, and it’s broad enough that I get to focus on whatever I want. I have to write a minimum number of articles a month, adn if the main person has any questions or issues, she asks me to edit. Sometimes a topic will be popular, and we have a google group for all of teh writers, so we can discuss there. The other writers are pretty great – if there is a relevent topic but doesn’t interest them or they don’t have time, they’ll often send it out to everyone.
