Hi there. I am starting a freelance editing job. I’ve never done it before but I have 4 years experience in proofreading/writing/copyediting. What is a fair hourly rate to charge someone for this service? I want to be fair, but not short change myself.

I do some freelance proofreading/copy editing on the side as well (mostly for academic publications). I charge based on the type of material I’m editing and how heavy handed I need to be. I use the EFA rates as my guide: http://www.the-efa.org/res/rates.php
Hope that helps!

I was paid per word with the jobs I did. $0.20/per word.

Congrats on your freelance gig! I try to stay flexible with my rates depending on the client– I have worked for start-ups, non-profits, and big corporations, and I keep that in mind when talking about the fee.
I also keep in mind my level of expertise with the given subject area–I specialize in education and parenting and have worked in those fields for seven years, so I generally charge more for those clients than newer areas.
Also, when I’m going through a dry spell, I may take a job for less $ than usual.
All that said, my base rate is between $50-70 hr.
