Any bees on here that are designers? What are your tips and what do you see often that you hate (that people do to “decorate” or think about home design)?
I never used to care about home design or think about decor but I’ve gotten hooked on watching HGTV in the past year.

I’m a residential and hospitality designer. When I walk into people houses I don’t judge them or say I hate that! Unless it’s totally insane but I do have things that kill me when working with clients.
I hate it when they see a picture or a vignette in a showroom and they want to just copy it exactly. Like going into Pottery Barn and buying the entire line of furniture or all the things that are in close proximity to each other. This goes for buying sets of furniture and having everything match exactly (all matching side tables / coffee tables, 2 matching lamps etc) Although I know that is a normal way to shop, it’s not okay for designers to shop like that.
One thing I notice is that people often hang there art way too high on the walls or hang photos that are too small to be hung. Most people have a hard time placing art so they don’t put enough on the walls to make the space looked finished. In the same vein not enough cohesive accessories, like pillows, throws, and little interesting things.
One thing I hate, hate, hate is when people are adamantly against something for for no reason. There are some unbelievably awesome wallpapers and most people say no way! without even realizing that this isn’t your grandmas wallpaper and it’s not going to take you 2 weeks to remove if you ever want to. Or saying they want the whole entire house one color or super neutral. That to me is the worst.
The last thing that i absolutely loath and so do all my designer friends is that people ask us for free advice (totally don’t mind – it’s no skin off my back to tell you my opinion) But then they ignore everything i say! And then months later when the space is complete they will say oh i wish I had thought of this or that and I’m like I told you that!! In my head only of course!

I need some serious design help as well. Like what color/length window treatments, where to place furniture and decor to add interest/ maximize space. I suck at this! Anyone who wouldnt mind helping feel free to PM me for pictures 😉

The odd thing is I am totally capable of choosing design elements in fashion (wedding dresses especially, I know exactly what will look good and why) but I can’t for interior design. Im super excited about this thread as its hard to find good reference suggestions that apply universally.
