We have a hot yoga studio right by us and I'm planning on trying a class sometime this week. Anyone do hot yoga? They have a bunch of different classes (I'll be starting with beginner since I've only done yoga videos) and I'm really looking forward to trying them out.

@HoneyBear: I think it's similar, but they do a different type.

The place by us is actually very flexible price-wise. Students can do a year of unlimited classes for around $200 (and they have ones with weights, different levels, etc), or you can pay like $30 per month for unlimited classes - or, certain classes are labeled "pay what you can" and everyone makes a donation. They also have a program where if you work 4 hrs/week there, you can get unlimited classes in return.

I have never heard of hot yoga...but based on Lelise's response, I'm assuming it has something to do with physical heat?

I tried Bikram and Hot Vinyasa yoga. The temperature in a Bikram yoga studio is usually 105 degrees. Too hot for me, but Hot Vinyasa yoga is about 80 or so. The heat is supposed to aid in stretching and flexibility. Both are pretty intensive because they require a lot of stamina. It's fun; enjoy!

Well, I hated every single minute of being in my hot yoga class ( I HATE humidity and I HATE heat)....but, I loved how I felt after the class.  So, it's a toss up for me.

make sure you are well hydrated! It was recommended not to eat 2 hours before the class., which I would agree with. I think it is a great workout though

I did bikram about five years ago and LOVED it! I was in great shape back then! ha! One of the things i really liked about it was I felt like I was having these mini-goals each class: okay, I didn't barf and I didn't pass out! Yay me! It also helped me to...sllloooooow...dooooown...and focus on my mind-body (does that sound cheesy?).

Wear as little as you feel comfortable doing so, be prepared for others to me wearing minimal attire and drink lots of water.

Give it shot and let us know what you think!

Thanks for the advice! My first class is Friday. I'm excited to try it because I adore heat and humidity. It's just getting to cold fall weather around here (although yesterday was warm!) so I'm definitely missing summer weather.

@lilyfaith: my best friend and MOH has been going religiously to bikram yoga and she SWEARS BY IT! neither of us are huge "workout" people... so this is a great combo of moderate exercise for us... be sure to keep hydrated! i'm not sure which studio she goes to, but she lives in lincoln park and i know that's not too far from lakeview... good luck!

p.s. she says her skin has never felt smoother from all of the hydration/sweating/etc.

I have considered it, but I am afraid of slipping on my mat! :S That and I don't do too well in the heat, doesn't matter how much water I have near by, lol

@Prettyinpink89: I've learned that bringing a towel to put down on your mat helps that! I definitely almost slipped a few times, as well.

I took a 6:30 "jolt" class this morning... crazy intense, but a fun start to the day! It was labeled all levels, but my fiance and I were the only beginners there... I definitely have a lot to learn, and can't wait until it comes more easily, but can't beat the workout and the great feeling it gives afterwards.

I was a 6 days a week Bikram girl and now I am just getting back into it.  I have never done hot yoga- just bikram.  i am not totally sure on the difference but I do know that the 26 postures in bikram are laid out in a very specific way and I can tell that my body has a very specific reaction to doing them in that order... same every time.

So to answer a few questions

    1) use a towel over your mat.  I have been to studios who don't even bother with a mat and I can totally understand this.  The only reason for the mat is a quarter inch of cushion.  But you will want a long towel and a handtowel or a washcloth to wipe your face.

    2) You don't need yoga experience.  When you go in the instructor should be notified that you are new.  They treat every person as if they have never done yoga before.  The poses for bikram are not difficult compared to other yoga.  Each and every pose can easily be done by my 60 year old mother.  Just you have to listen to your body and don't push.  You are looking for strength and stability not showing off.  Even after I have done it all this time I don't push into poses nearly as far as some people. The instructors for Bikram are trained by Bikram himself and part of the practice is that they recite "dialogue"... this means the entire time they will be telling you what you need to do... 'pull in your abs, lift your knee, lock your leg, hand over toe' so that you are constantly making corrections and learning.

    3) Yep you will sweat.  Boy you will learn to love it.  Don't wear cotton if you don't like sticky clothes.  Bike shorts work the best.  I do not have the best body at all but it takes about three seconds for you really not to care what you look like.  One thing that is a challege in bikram is to concentrate and not spend the whole time wiping sweat from your brow.  If you wipe it more will come back and you will have broken the concentration... just let it sweat.  If you are really bothered by sweat in your eyes buy a sweatband. You will love having it.

    4) Drinking water.  Now I have done it both ways... drinking water during class and not drinking it.  Personally I will drink water all day up to class... and yes please don't eat less than two hours before.  When I drink water in class it actually will turn my stomach a little bit.  If you are generally hydrated I don't feel I need it during class.  Now I will gulp it down the minute I get out though.  I will suggest that if you decide to drink water during class don't make it ice cold as it feels like it shocks my system and don't gulp... take some in your mouth and swallow slowly.  You actually do want to keep your body really hot during the exercise and the cold water just makes me want to barf.

    5) Yep I agree with BirdieLove... you will fee like you are going to barf or pass out during your first few classes.  If you dedicate to 3-7 days straight your first week I promise you will see such improvement in such a short period of time.  And the barf/faint feeling will be gone.. it just takes a few classes to get all that toxic stuff out of your system.

    6) Sweating and your skin... Dude it is awesome.  Clearest and softest skin you will ever have... Make sure to wash your makeup off before class

    7) Food.  In one class you will see a changing in your food cravings.  You will be starved the minute class is over and all you will want is veggies and health food.  The picture of a hamburger will gross you out.  That is what me and my friends found.

I am not one of those bikram finatics.  I know those people.  I just hate working out these days and that is all I can commit myself to.  I will say after lots of old sports related injuries this has done wonders for my body.  I have not lost a ton of weight (I still have lots of wobbly bits) but it REALLY strengthened my back which made me stand up alot straighter and it detoxed my body.  Oh and I slept like a ROCK!  I have been out of bikram for a year and a half and just started back two weeks ago just making it in once a week but I say if you can put in the time of 3 days a week you will feel a big difference.

@alphajuliet: Thanks for your response! I hope anyone who is considering hot yoga sees it because I would have loved to have seen it laid out like that before my first few classes.

My studio is actually mainly Vinyasa yoga, not Bikram. We do some challenging poses, although the Level 1 classes are standard and universal poses.

The only thing I can comment on is that I never felt nauseous (perhaps because I ate just a light meal about 4 hours beforehand) and that my cravings didn't really change. But I eat a vegan diet already, and even my junk food is on the healthy side - i.e., nothing processed, etc.

@lilyfaith: Hahaha... eat the crap that I do (can you say totinos 99 cent pizza?) and you will feel a total detox when getting into Bikram but for a vegan I can see it wouldn't change too much.  Glad to hear you liked my review. I feel that Bikram isn't scary or cultish it just seems those are the people who review it on the internet.

Has anyone tried a 30 day bikram challenge? They have those and I want to try it, but I'm not sure if it would be good for you?

Yea I have done it and nothing about it is bad for you.  You will be sore as you are working out everyday and you need to make sure to hydrate through the entire month and eat well.  (note you will be burning a ton of calories so you need to feed your body accordingly) Other than that no different than doing any other workout every single day for a month.  This is actually a great way to start with bikram.  You will see huge improvements in just a week.

@tdizzle: just curious, did you ever try the 30 day challenge? We've been going 5 days a week, and I adore it! I'd go the other two, but I work 12 hour shifts, so there are no classes offered by the time I'm off.
