I recently ran across facebook pictures of a wedding outside of a country church. It was held in front of the main doors was very simple and southern, but beautiful. My FI and I are having a southern wedding. Our first dance is "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show, our ceremony music is going to be played either by fiddle or an acoustic guitar, and we're going to have lawn games. I was inspired to have everyone drink out of Mason Jars but I'm starting to think it's out of the budget.
I'm having a more formal and elaborate Southern wedding but some of the things we are doing that could still be ideas for you are:
We're doing down home Southern cookin! Fried chicken, collard greens, mac n cheese, grilled catfish, cornbread and biscuits, mashed potatoes, and other southern apps during cocktail hour. Coke and sweet tea to drink (and of course the alcohol). One of our cake layers will be red velvet. Our favors are personalized glass Coke bottles with a yellow ribbon around it. Lots of lace and pearls to go back to the vintage, old fashioned type wedding. Ha we're playing Dixie as our exit/last dance song (long story, it fits us).
I love the idea of Mason jars for drinking glasses AND as centerpieces to hold flowers. My girlfriend is wearing cowboy boots under her dress and so is her fiance. For me, Southern also means tradition and family, so that will be big in all aspects of ours. There's so many things you can do! What I do is go to Barnes and Noble and just grab as many wedding magazines as I can, espcially the regional ones (aka Southern and Atlanta ones) and I take pictures, write things down, and I'll also buy a few. Go to the South board on here and leave a post, I'm sure plenty of the Southern belles will leave you some good ideas!
Twista, I love how your wedding sounds, I'm sure it was beautiful!
I have been planning a southern wedding for a bride and we are using hay bales for seating, and one of the cake ideas that i thought was so cute was a treestump cake it was 4 8 inch cakes stacked to look like a tree stump and on the top was a heart with an arrow and the names of the bride and groom (like it had been carved in kinda) very cute, we are using mason jars with daisies for centerpieces, while this bride has a lot of camo in her wedding as well, some of these ideas might help,
What about lemonades or sweet tea in mason jars? I'm from the north, but there is NOTHING like a southern sweet tea.
Thank you so much for all of ya'lls suggestions. They have helped me so much=]
Oooh Southern weddings are my favorite! I just love that theme! When I think of a southern theme, I think TONS of fresh flowers. I mean everywhere! Also, I love the idea of lemonade and tea in mason jars.
There was a wedding I went to a while back, although it wasn't a southern theme, it was a midsummer nights theme, but they had lanterns with candles in them strung in the trees, and over the tables. It was very enchanting. :)
