Oh wow! I don't know a dang thing about chess, so I can't help, but your theme and your venue are awesome!! I love those chairs!!
Hmmm. Well since chess is a game, it would be nice to maybe offer chess as an activity. Maybe if you have some tables (like cabaret tables) for the cocktail hour, you can have a few games on there, for folks to play, throughout the reception. Or a seperate table somewhere.
And this might seem kind of weird. But once I was at a Renaissance Fair where they had a human chess match. I don'tknow what that would entail or how much space it would take up. But maybe that would be fun? Maybe not. Or it might require hiring Ren. Fair people to facilitate. But just threw it out there.
We're using chess pieces as our table "numbers" but I don't know if that's too theme-y for you. We're also going to be having chess sets at the wedding for people to play like Tanya suggested.
Are you doing table numbers? If so you could incorporate the chess theme there (each table number could be of a different chess piece - like a white knight table and a black knight table).
Thanks Laylabelle! I am obsessed with those chairs, its kind of ridiculous ...
@Tanya & Cien: We aren't planning on setting up actual games, because a) we want to have an upbeat vibe with people talking and dancing, and b) we're packing the venue to the brim so there won't be any additional room to set up games. We just sort of want to incorporate it into our decor. We thought about chess pieces attached to the escort cards, but then we decided to do place cards instead... thanks for the ideas! Keep 'em coming!
this is a sorta chess/marriage joke our friend told in the interview video (we had to cut it though)
marital advice:
once a queen, always a queen
once a knight (night), is never enough
I like naming the tables after pieces of the game, and you could even see about finding pieces as table assignment holders for the table names or for each guest.
thanks for all the ideas ladies, seriously considering the table name thing! I am going to hope to take advantage of the post-a-thon and see if there are any other suggestions?
I love where you're going with your mini chess theme. The thing with themes is that its important to not go overboard & your reception has the perfect amount of chess touches!
I have a mini airplane/travel theme for our wedding & I'm trying to be careful to not make it feel like a young boys b-day party w/ all the travel stuff lol.
I think your wedding is going to be absolutely incredible & uh yeah those chairs are amazing!!
@Recessionista: I know, I am trying to be careful so that it doesn't look like the chess club's reunion or something, just some subtle details ... I love your travel theme, how fun!

Okay Bees, bear with me on this one ... so far we've got the "majors" for our reception decor pretty much down: colors are black, white and purple, modern/clean lines with a few vintage touches. The FI loves chess, and we thought it would be a great idea to incorporate some chess stuff into the reception decor - NOT like a huge over-bearing theme, just little hints. We want to keep an elegant vibe and not be too kitschy; on the other hand, I do want it to be cohesive and not like a half-baked idea. So far, we've got:
-cake toppers will be a white queen piece with a veil and a black king piece with a bow-tie
-"mr" and "mrs" chair signs with etsy decals in shape of king and queen
-guestbook will be placed on a large chess board
-favors will be 2 inch black square boxes (filled with something edible TBD) with a white square sticker that says "checkmates!" and our names, date, etc
Is there anything else you guys can think of? I'd love to hear some cool creative ideas! Here are some pics of our venue (how awesome are the chairs?! and the colors will be B&W and purple, not the golds and oranges shown) and what we want our centerpieces to look like. Thanks all!
