I am a Pagan bee marrying an agnostic guy. We are having a secular ceremony by a reverend of the Unitarian Universalist church. I am looking for ways to bring in a Pagan vibe or nature vibe without weirding out our Christian, conservative family. We will be doing the hand fasting and jumping the broom but no calling a circle or naming the elements.

We did an Irish blessing (most of those are filled with nature references, we choose the “may the road rise to meet you… ” ) and a poem about lovers from Lord Byron. We also did a unity candle which is a good fire element. You can bring elements in without calling them- another example being holy water sprinkling to bring in the water element, you could have someone play a wind instrument for the air element, and you can talk about foundation of a relationship to bring in the earth element.
Also . I think bringing in some aspects (example: unity candle) that you would see in other weddings helps them feel like its not a completely different affair.
I HIGHLY recommend the book “Handfasting and Wedding Rituals: Welcoming Hera’s Blessing”. It has pagan levels 1-3 so it gives you ideas for how to still have a pagan wedding with only hints of paganism to full blown out of the broom closet pagan wedding. It was the MOST helpful book. We ended up taking parts of the various rituals in that book and combinding them for what we were looking for.

I will go order that book. Thanks for the ideas.
