Are there any Northern Michigan brides out there? I can't be the only one! Let's hear some details!
I'm getting married on Mackinac this May, but I'm not sure that classifies me as a Northern MI bride. :)
Close enough! I was feeling a little lonely! I guess we'll have to start spreading the word of weddingbee to all the other girls we know that are getting married in Michigan!
Where are you getting married? I was just on the island last summer...it is such a beautiful place!
It seems most ganders on weddingbee are getting married in the Detroit area or Western MI. I was excited to see a new bee from the UP! Especially since you got engaged on my birthday and my FI is from Chicago. :)
We are getting married at the Little Stone Church, it's on the Grand Hotel hill. The first time we went to the island we decided that's where we wanted to get married, so I'm pretty excited that it's all coming together to make that happen! I'm hoping that our guests that have never been will like it as much as we do! :)
We're not getting married up North, but we're taking our "mini-moon" at the Homestead in Glen Arbor. We did think about getting married in the Traverse City area (my fiance's hometown), but decided to stay at home downstate instead. :)
I'm getting married August 1 in Marquette. I lived there for about 7 years, but am living in southwest Florida now. My mom lives just outside of Marquette. We decided to get married there because it was close to his family (they are in Wisconsin), and it was MUCH cheaper than getting married in Florida!
@bluejay2201: That church will be perfect! It is so cute from outside (I've never been inside, but I'm sure it's beautiful!) Where are you having the reception?
@Jessie516: I'll admit it, I had to mapquest Glen Arbor. I am not so great at lower MI geography :) Looks like a great place for a mini-moon though!
@lucie73821: I'm in a wedding in MQT next month! Are you having your reception at the Upfront? It seems like that's a popular reception spot. Every wedding reception I've ever been to in Marquette has been there!
I'm from Niagara, WI (I live in Madison right now) and I am getting married next month in Iron Mountain. I am having my ceremony at the riverside methodist church and my reception at Pine Grove country club. I have been following weddingbee for awhile and I thought it was really cool to see that you were having your wedding in the same area as me.
@dmchartier: Oh Pine Grove... it's such a beautiful golf course. Your wedding will be gorgeous I'm sure! Is your fiance from that area as well?
Our reception is going to be at the Lilac Tree Hotel on the island. It's right on the main street across from Starline and Shepler's docks. I keep calling it our dungeon, but it's really a small banquet room that is downstairs by the hotel's spa. At the rate our "yes" RSVPs are coming back, I'm starting to stress a little bit because the facility only holds 80 max. Initially our estimate was maybe 30-40 people, just close friends and family, but now completely random people are coming out of the woodwork! We are trying to work out worse case scenarios, but moving the event 30 days before the wedding is freaking me out like no other. :(
So the lesson here is: If you are paying for your wedding yourself, and your mother asks to invite random people you haven't seen in 13 years, make sure you are ok with them coming to the wedding. Because apparently some of them just may decide to show up! :)
Mascara, Yes, my reception will be at Upfront. In fact, I booked it sight unseen! I never went there when I lived in Marquette. My mom scouted out all potential venues in MQT, and felt Upfront was the best. I have heard nothing but good things about it. :) I figured it must be really popular, we called in the begining of January of 2008 and tried to get a date for that summer. August 1, 2009 was the FIRST open Saturday they had!
Mascara, I've been waiting for you to do this! I couldn't figure out how to pm you lol... I am not getting married in the UP, but I am getting married across "the ditch" in sault ste marie ontario! I spend a lot of time in the UP though, so I can relate!!!
Hi! I'm in Escanaba! We're having our reception at the Terrace in Gladstone on January 30th next year.
@bluejay2201: That's where we stayed when we were there! Hope it all works out for you!
@lucie73821: The Upfront is an awesome reception venue. It is pretty, and there is a gorgeous balcony that you can use for pictures and hanging out during the cocktail hour. Plus, after the reception, you can always have an afterparty in the bar! It is really a great place.
@Kirst: Glad you can relate :) Want know something bad? I've never even been to Canada! I am embarrassed to say that since I grew up so close to it!
@Miss Starlet: Congrats! A winter wedding in the yoop...I'm a little jealous!
I'm glad to know there are a few of us getting married in the area. Let's try to boost the activity on this board a little! :)
I'm from San Diego, and when I moved to the UP eight years ago, I fell in love in love with the gorgeous fall colors, so I reeeeaalllly wanted a fall wedding. My fiancee, who has lived here his whole life said he'd rather get married in the Winter. So, after researching things, he convinced me that was the way to go. Right from the get go, I wanted a vintage, glamourous 30s style wedding, verry glossy and chic with some sparkle and shine. How perfect in the winter. And the ballroom at the Terrace has a gorgeous huge picture window that overlooks the bay. There is also a huge fountain right outside that is so pretty in the winter with lights and sparkles. So, everything is working out and we are both getting everything we want. Not to mention, getting married this time of year is saving us a couple grand, which is great, because we want to keep our budget under 12,000.
@mascara - don't be embarrassed, you're the norm I think. It was always easy for me to travel to places like Mackinac Island, Traverse City, etc because my sister sometimes had soccer tournaments in the UP... Plus I love American junk food and since we never had Taco Bell in SSM during my youth I would always cross the border for it during spares! If you do get a chance to cross, you should, us Canadians are a lot of fun ;P
@Miss Starlet: WOW San Diego to Escanaba...that is a big change! You must like winter a lot to handle that move. Although I think the fall colors sometimes make it all worth it...fall is by far my favorite season to be up there. Although I don't mind hanging out on the lakes in the summer either!
@Kirst: I definitely will be traveling to Canada someday! Not until after the wedding though since I'm already in the hole with vacation days.
Have you guys been finding that there are little to no wedding resources geared towards the UP area? It is impossible to find vendor recommendations (let alone vendors) to help with the process! It's frustrating at times.
Mascara- I am so frustrated over the lack of wedding resources for the UP! It's been very difficult planning the wedding from Florida, because there's a huge lack of info online. One very valuable source of info for me was the banquet manager from Upfront. When I met with her last summer, she was planning her wedding for this past October. She was such a wealth of info! We found our photographer based on her!
I like to research everything on the internet, and there is little to no information for UP wedding vendors online. My best resource was my mom, since she has a lot friends whose children recently got married. I found though in the end that things tend to be cheaper with a little research and creativity. I know forsure that I am having a really nice wedding for a lot less than if I had my wedding in Madison.
@lucie73821: I've heard all about the banquet manager there! Since my friend is planning her wedding there from Minnesota, she's been helping her a lot too!
@dmchartier: My mom (and my FMIL) are my best resources too. We actually know almost all of our vendors personally, which helps a little. I do agree on the lower cost, although for some things I feel like I'd rather pay a little more and actually have some options (i.e. venue).
I'm going to try to start some more specific threads on this board, and with your help maybe we can get more info out to the other UP brides struggling for information! So keep checking in on the Northern Michigan board and please comment!! :) Thanks
@mascara... I actually hate the winters!! Every winter I curse myself for living here! But, I have a daughter with special needs, and the support from my family (who moved here when I was in college) is invaluable. And then I found my guy, so I guess it's UP winters for me!
@lucie73821... do you mind if I ask who you are using for your photog?
The lack of resources is def frustrating, but one of my BM got married last year, so I've been lucky that she has some info for me. We actually have a Dream Day Event Center in Escanaba that is supposed to be a wedding planning super store, but my experiences with them have been very frustrating. We're actually the bulk of our shopping in Green Bay or Appleton (which bugs me, bc I am all about keeping my $ local, but this is different, right?).
Our DJ is so great, btw. I've been to a couple of weddings that he's done, and I'm really excited about that!
I am getting married in Marquette, Michigan on July 4, 2010. My fiancee is from there originally and most of his family lives around there so we decided to have it there... It has been hard trying to find vendors since I dont live there and I am not sure who is good and who is not...
@txlawgal: I'm sure some of us can help you! Do you have specific vendors you are looking for? Have you chosen your ceremony and reception venues yet?
OOH! A Holiday weekend! I would definitely start aggressively shopping around! There really are a limited number of quality vendors! If you have any questions about anything, I can help out with my experiences. I have a great set of wedding planning bridesmaidzillas who have all planned weddings in the area too, so really, any questions!
So far I have booked my reception at the Up Front in Marquette. Anna is helping me with some of the vendors that she recommended... I havent booked anyone else so far. I am also still looking for a reception site... I wanna get married outside close to the up front... was thinking maybe Presque Isle.
For the flowers we were looking at Luteys but i am thinking about mixing some fake flowers as well so its not as expensive so i dont know if there are places that do that or if maybe i can just go to a shop and put something together... I am not that creative...
Cake- Joe's cakes
DJ- lake enterntainment
Photographer- CK unlimited
Any suggestions?
I also wanted to do some paper lanterns for the reception...does anyone know of who does that in Marquette?
Thanks!
My friend is getting married on Presque Isle and having her reception at the Upfront. It's actually at the end of the month, so I will get some details for you about how it works out! I'm not sure who all of her vendors are, but I know they are going with Daniele Carol as their photographer. I've heard good things about her and actually considered using her myself (until we won our photographer). You can find more info on her at http://www.danielecarol.com/.
I don't know who does decorations and rentals in Marquette, but I may be able to get you in touch with my decorator, who has a bunch of lanterns and may be willing to rent them out. I'll ask her if she's interested when I'm in Michigan next weekend.
@txlawgal: So my friend's wedding was this past weekend, and it was beautiful! The ceremony was on Presque Isle, and besides being quite chilly outside, the weather was great!
We got mani/pedis on Thursday at Nails by Kate, the girls were really nice there. The rehearsal dinner was at the Elizabeth's Chop House on Front Street...and the food was to die for. Some of the best whitefish and dessert I've ever had! (I had the bananas foster bread pudding...SO GOOD!) If you are still looking for a place to have the rehearsal dinner I highly recommend this place! After the rehearsal dinner we went back to our hotel room to have our girly sleepover. We had the penthouse suite at the Landmark Inn...it was amazing! The room had a huge living room and full size kitchen w/ granite countertops, etc. and 2 bedrooms w/ king size beds and 2 bathrooms. If you are looking to do something similar with your girls the night before the wedding this place is perfect.
The wedding was on Friday, so in the morning we went to The Studio on Front Street to get our hair done. The girls there did a really good job, we all loved our hair! Then we went back to the penthouse to get ready and then headed for Presque Isle in a Checker Cab van. They had reserved the pavilion on the island before the wedding, so we hung out there to eat and take pictures before the ceremony. The ceremony was on the other side of the island in front of the gazebo so we took the shuttle to the other side just before the ceremony.
They had a string quartet that were actually students at NMU and the local high school, they sounded pretty good! They had a local pastor from Little Lake as the officiant, since that's where the groom was from.
Daniele Carol was their photographer, and while I haven't seen the pictures yet, she was great to work with.
The reception wasn't decorated much, although at the Upfront you don't need much since the decor is pretty neutral. The flowers they did have (lilacs, daisies, and tulips) were all very pretty. I'm not sure who they had as their florist, but I can ask if you are wondering. They had Legends Entertainment for their DJ, and the guy did a great job. The food was good (except the green beans), I had the chicken, but I also heard good things about the prime rib. The wedding cake was delicious, but again I'm not sure who made it. I can find out if you want.
Hope this helps!!
Does anyone know if they rent trolleys or antique cars in or near marquette michigan?
Also, a good salon to get hair done w your bridesmaids on the wedding day and also makeup.
Also, I am having a church ceremony at 2:00pm and the reception is not til 5pm. Any ideas on what to have my out of town guests do while they wait in between?? We might do a coctail hour from 4-5 but we still have an hr to kill...
Thanks! :)
I know there is a place that you can rent a trolley from in Calumet, but I'm not sure if they will travel to Marquette. My guess is that they probably will. People in the UP will do anything for you. Here's the info:
Red Jacket Trolley Company, Fifth Street, Calumet, MI 49913, Phone: (906) 281-7897
Or you might be able to rent one from this place in Marquette, but I have no idea!
Marq-Tran Trolley Tours, 145 W. Spring St., Marquette (906)225-1112
As far as hair and makeup goes, I would recommend The Studio for your hair, they do a great job and they are really friendly. The STUDIO Hair Design, 207 S. Front St., Marquette (906)228-1010. It doesn't look like they do makeup though, so I don't have a recommendation for that.
In between the ceremony and reception, I would recommend they check out the bar called The Vierling. They have awesome blueberry beer, it is SO good. Plus, it's right across the street from the Upfront so they can just walk over to the reception from there for the cocktail hour! The Vierling Restaurant and Marquette Harbor Brewery, 119 S. Front St., Marquette (906)228-3533.
Good luck!! Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any other recommendations.
I did it ladies! I got married in Marquette on August 1st! Anyone else getting married in Marquette?
We had our hair done at the Studio, and it was wonderful! We also went to the Vierling inbetween the ceremony (at 2) and reception (5:30).
Txlawgal, I used Lake Entertainment for my DJ, had my reception at the Upfront, and used CK unlimited for my photography. Any questions, feel free to ask away!

Pics are organized on the right. These are all non pro pics so far. Enjoy!
Congrats Lucie!
I am planning along for my wedding which is taking place in Marquette on July 4, 2010. I am having the ceremony at St. Peter’s Cathedral at 2pm and the Reception at the Up Front at 5pm. I am still getting the vendors together but I think we are doing:
Flowers: Gwinn Flowers (Senja)
DJ: Top Gun Entertainment (Andy)
Photographer: CK Unlimited
Cake: Mindy Sager
We might do a cocktail hour before the reception but we still have one hour with nothing to do. I am trying to figure something out.
Yay for Yooper bar favors :) You looked beautiful Lucie! Your dress was stunning! Congrats again, and thanks for sharing your pics!!
My fiance and I have just started our planning but we are getting married in Marquette in June, 2010. We still haven't decided on a date yet!!! But we know we want a Friday afternoon wedding.
We hope to have a ceremony on the beach at Wetmore Landing and are thinking about using the Landmark for our afternoon reception. Has anyone else used them and what do you think about them? Also, they said we'd have to use their baker for our wedding cake - Joe's Cakes....anyone heard of him? And if anyone could give feedback on florists from the area.
Unfortunately, we live in WA right now, so we have to go by memories from college at NMU and family that still live in the UP.
Thanks!
