My fiance and I live in NJ, and we’re doing a destination wedding in France… but since we can’t legally marry in France (unless you’ve been living there for 2 months or something like that), the ceremony there will be symbolic. To make it legal, we’ll be getting married in NYC (at the lovely new city clerk’s office) before we go to France.
Now, I’d like to drop my middle name, make my last name my new middle, and then take his last name. ie. FirstName MaidenLastName HisLastName
However, I was just reading on the NYC city clerk’s site and saw that when you apply for your marriage license, you have the option to change your surname, but NOT your middle!
Soooo – how do I go about making my desired name change? Doesn’t seem like I can do it when I get the NYC license and legal ceremony in NYC. Do i file separate paperwork? Do i need to do it in NJ since that’s where i live? I’m so confused and can’t find much through the online research I did – everything was so confusing! Any advice would be appreciated.
