@GIB101083:  Haven’t been to Africa yet but our honeymoon will be in Southern Africa! CANNOT WAIT! South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Nambia and Zimbabwe– camping out of a truck with a group of strangers. We are adventure types so roughing it is perfect for us! 🙂

I would love to go but the tours are really expensive! The tourism industry’s still developing so I haven’t been able to work anything out for less than $150 per person per day. And that’s if we’re camping!

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

Technically, we are! 🙂 we live in South Africa and won’t be travelling abroad this year. So our honeymoon will be local, in South Africa! I am still beyond excited though, as we are going somewhere where neither of us have been before, and it is gorgeous!

If anyone is looking for tips for travel in South Africa, give me a shout and I will be happy to help where I can! 🙂

If you do, make sure you don’t scrimp on accommodation. We went to Africa just on a holiday in March, and stayed in fairly basic accommodation and 2 nights of camping. The holiday itself was great, but when it is hot, and the bed is a bit lumpy, and you’re tangling up with the mozzie net, it doesn’t make for a romantic night, which you would want for a honeymoon!

My best holiday to date was in africa! Mostly we were in South Africa, but we also spent time in lesotho, Zambia and Zimbabwe… Such an amazing holiday, loved safari in Kruger national park, also had the best time in Cape Town, Jo’burg, stellenbosch and hermanus. Honestly cannot recommend it enough. I think it is a perfect setting for a romantic and adventurous honeymoon you’ll never forget..

I have some friends who have, I want to! They had a great time, went through this company, I think they stayed in mid level hotels but there are a range of options. http://www.rafikiadventuretours.com/

We went on safari as our “delayed honeymoon” several months after our wedding.  Seven nights on safari in Zimbabwe, one night at Victoria Falls, and five nights in Cape Town.  It was amazing and I am so glad I pushed to take this trip.  The scenery and wildlife were incredible.  This is the travel agent we used: http://www.classicafrica.com/

The only caveat is that unless you pay outrageous amounts — and ‘regular’ safari is plenty expensive to begin with — to go on private safari, you are going to have 100% group meals and very little private downtime on while at camp.  I got pretty tired of making small talk with strangers all day.  It was exhausting and I was very grateful when I finally got to have dinner with my husband at VF.  The only reason I mention this is that it wasn’t a very romantic experience.  (We went on a “mini-moon”after our wedding, so this was not as big of a deal for us, but for introverted me it the dynamic got old after awhile.)

Southern Africa is supposed to have smaller, more intimate camps than East Africa.  That is why we chose Zim over Kenya or Tanzania.

PM me if you want to see our photos.

I’ve had a couple of friends go to South Africa for honeymoons, but my experience in Africa was living in Ghana for two summers. Ghana is absolutely fabulous — well-priced, beautiful, kind people, stable. It’s also not as popular as other tourist destinations, so there are less yevu/obruni to deal with, lol.

Because of work and stuff, we had a big vacation before we got married.   We went on safari in Tanzania and then went to the beach in Zanzibar.   It was AHH-MAH-ZING.      We used a UK based agency – Africa Travel Resource – and it worked out great even though we are in North America there were no problems at all.   The trip was spectacular; find a smallish place to do safaris so that you get personal attention, or at least a private guide.   There isn’t much in the middle-budget range of things and even the higher-end stuff can be what would be considered mid-range in North America.   I’m usually a budget traveller, so it was an enormous splurge that was totally worth it!   We were raving about it so much that friends used the same company to do their safari honeymoon and thought that it was wonderful.

I’ve been to South Africa – Kruger and Cape Town. Cape Town is amazing, but you do need to be careful – we very nearly got mugged! In the centre of town at 11am on a main street. If a local passerby hasn’t shooed the guy away who knows what would have happened. But otherwise we loved it. We stayed in a guesthouse called 2 Inn 1 I think and I cannot say enough positive things about it, they treated us like royalty, and it was fairly reasonably priced.
