While I have the schooling too, I don’t work as a paralegal yet. I am a legal secretary. In the area I live in, usually it is word of mouth, and really hard to find a paralgeal job. Not only that places around here don’t care about your degree either.  Where I work I am the only one who has a bachelors in legal studies. (I have my associates and also sat through the certification test) We have 7 paralegals where I work and only 2 are certified also with no schooling. I am actually wanting to relocate to find a job or go back to school for something else. I used to just send my resume to different law firms or offices to find a job. I was told when I took this job I would be moved up and keep being promised…they had brought in 2 others to become paralegals and I am still sitting here after 2 years. (I have over 5 years in the legal field). I have done some paralegal work, and I enjoy it and would like to do more…

I guess it really depends on your area. Are there any local organizations for the legal community? (Like NALA) We have a local one and they always send out job openings usually before everyone else knows. Start networking in the legal community! I have been looking for jobs in a bigger city and they require a bachelors and certification (and pay more). Can you start applying now anyways? It also seems like (and that is here) paralegal jobs don’t come open until someone retires…

I know what you mean! I started in the health field, but a semester away I realized it wasn’t for me, but now I wish I had finished so I could have something to fall back on.
