Now that were married my husband and I really want to get into photography. We want to buy a nice DSLR and have photography be our hobby together and maybe a potential business someday.

So my question to the pro photogs in here and the hobby photogs is this -

what blogs should I follow? Are there any great websites that teach you tips and tricks for photo editing and using a DSLR? What sites are best for purchasing items? I've heard about B&H photo. Are there others?

What sites do most people use for uploading photos for their clients?

B&H and adorama are the top two I'd say.

I'd have to two of you go and hold lots of cameras and decide if you like the feel of Nikon or Canon the best. Once you make that decision it would become very expensive to switch, so find which ones you like the best ergonomically. Both systems are fantastic and you won't loose with either one. They will also ALWAYS go back and forth on the newest technology... so let feel be your first priority.

What kind of photography do you want to get into? There are zillions of blogs for each facet... I would get a camera, start reading about how to use all your settings and start googling the different terms. Learn how to set your exposure, aperture, ISO and how they all relate together. Learn how changing certain settings will change the image.

Learning photography is a beast. The technical aspects, artistic aspects, the editing, etc... worry about that first and then once you have solid photography knowledge and decide to actually start a business worry about where to upload for clients. That knowledge too will come as you learn.

In the meantime get a pro flickr account so you can upload unlimited photos and check out lots of the helpful groups on there.

I use B&H almost exclusively. I have an online wishlist there that makes my husband weep....

I totally agree with KLP above. I went with a Nikon because it just *felt* better in my hands.

Photography is an expensive hobby, so be prepared for that. Lenses are super-expensive, and addictive.

The best thing to read? The manual that comes with the camera. I'm not kidding--it's incredibly helpful. I also like Understanding Exposure.

Random tip: My husband has no interest in photography, but when he uses my camera (in auto mode--that's all he'll do), I told him to manually hold the pop-up flash down, and the camera will readjust to use the available light (assuming there's enough).

Play with it. Practice. Get on top of things, lay down on the floor, etc., etc. Shoot in aperture-priority mode until you feel comfortable with it, then go to shutter-priority, then go to manual. Understand ISO. Play with white balance.

Also, I use SmugMug for my personal/family pics. I password-protect it, and family members can grab full-sized pics of my kiddos. I love it (and, it's blasphemy, but I just never liked Flickr).
