My FI and I are planning to get married next summer in my hometown of San Diego, yay!! We are not planning anything extravagant - low budget & low fuss!!! The ONLY thing I really want is a beach front ceremony - however, most of the hotels offering beach ceremony sites are quite pricey, and I don't know if I want to risk reserving a spot on a public beach in fear of the summer time crowds!!

How have my fellow San Diego brides managed their beach ceremonies?? Are their affordable options that I haven't thought of? What has been your experience with the public sites (e.g. Windansea & Coronado beaches, etc.)??

Your help and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks beach bees!!!

If it doesn't have to be beach front, and can just be ocean fron on a cliff, you have a few options.

There is OB cliffs, Calumet park, and the wedding bowl (please don't take our day 8/28/09)  I will cry).  Those are all city parks and go for like $200, not chairs or anything, just park fee.   These are all done by lottery. I think that is pretty darn affordable.  Also there is a house on the Scripps institute property that has an amazing view.  not sure about pricing or name.  But I think if you google Scripps, weddings you might find it.

    Good luck,

PS, please please don't take our day at the wedding I really will cry.  Have been waiting for the lottery for about 1.5 years now.  So do a bee a favor :)

The girl at my work is getting married right beside the Hotel Del Coronado with the view of that and the ocean and half the price. You should look into it.

Lobstergirl, no worries...I could NOT do that to you or any fellow bride!! How *@$% up would that be! The earliest I am planning my wedding is next summer, in 2010! But wow, it took 1.5 years to get it???

The thing is we havent' gotten it yet.  I will explain. . . so these are all city parks.  They book them only 1 year in advance.  FH and I were a little ahead of ourselves, (we are planning from DC, and wanted to give ourselves time)  We found the wedding bowl last year, and fell in love.  Well, They only book a year in advance, and the way they book it is funny.  So you fax, send or drop off an application stating the day you want your event.  The earliest you can do this is one year in advance on the 1st week of the month.  So since we are getting married in 2010 (sorry I think I put 09 up there, I meant 8/28/10).  We will submit an application by August 3, 2009.  On that day they will apply numbers to all applications received, and call you according to the numbers drawn out of a hat (or some equally crymptic device).  When they call you you tell them what you want, and hopefully you are early so you have your pick of the days.  So we will be submitting our application, and hoping that other brides don't have as big a head start as we do.  Unlikely, but keep your fingers crossed for us.

Sorry to post so late, but I had a suggestion for you.  I wanted my wedding on hte beach as well, well at least it had to be ON the water directly, but still reasonable.  Our solution was a military venue.  We aren't military, but you just need a friend or family member in the military to sign off on your contract for you.  There are 3-4 military sites in San Diego on the water.

    • Breaker's Beach Deck in Coronado (on the beach directly!  I have photos of this)
    • Oceanview Room on Naval Base Point Loma (Our chosen location, end of point loma on coronado side, outdoor deck and yard with indoor room, i have photos of this place of course)
    • Admiral Kidd Club
    • Cant remember the last... sorry, this and Admiral Kidd are both on the water but can only be indoors

Anyways, long story short its $700 to rent for the wedding, an extra few hundred if you have the ceremony there as well.  Down side is you must use their caterers and alcohol, but still ends up being WAYYYY cheaper and excellent locations.  PM me if you want to see photos of Oceanview and Breakers Beach.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

This site should be helpful to you: http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/shoreline/index.shtml

When I was looking for our officiant, I came across a few of them that will help getting permit or setup wedding on the sandy beach.  You might want to try that as well.  Good Luck!

My fiancee and I are so lucky, we both attended Point Loma Nazarene University so we can use locations on their campus for an unbelievably cheap price (read $300 for both the ceremony and reception).

We're getting married on a cliff overlooking the ocean.

Cliff overlooking the ocean in San Diego? Check :)

Check Paradise point but it is not a public site though! They have an island lawn that overlooks the bay and it is gorgeous!

We're getting married at Cuvier Park in La Jolla on 11/28/09...lobstergirl - were you able to get it? The La Jolla Shores hotel also offers a wedding ceremony right on the beach, but I believe it is a pricier option. You can also try La Jolla Bridge Club, right next to the water or La Jolla Cove Suites which has a rooftop deck where you can see the water.

I'm a san diego beach bride. Haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but Powerhouse Community Center in Del Mar is BEAUTIFUL, and affordable.  We're getting married there and it's $2k for the day.  Right on the beach, with a nice patio overlooking the ocean.  Beautiful.  2 more months, can't wait!!!
