We ski! I hadn't for a long long time before I met my FI, but he's been doing it his whole life so I let him re-teach me (I had first learned when I was like.. 10). Our first vacation together was actually a long weekend skiing up north.
I prefer cross country skiing, but we have tons of fun doing both together!
That is so cool, I've never done cross country, I like the freedom of flying down the mountain, so I'm not sure how well i'd do with that. We really wanna go on a ski trip to Colorado or something, but I want to get better first. I'm ok, but not very strong for all day skiing. Hopefully this season will be better, i've been working on making my legs stronger.
i skied back when i lived in japan, and then took up snowboarding as well, which i was able to do in college, when i lived in WA...now that I am in FL...not so much. And I am kinda too chicken to waterski!
FI can waterski (he used to do it in lakes in Iowa where he grew up) but has never snow-skied. I'd love to take a trip to Colorado or somewhere like that one day!!
Yeah I like cross coutnry because it's a little more peaceful and we get to see the scenery. We do tons of hiking in the summer, so cross country is our wintertime alternative!
We'd both been out to Colorado with our families long before we met - but we went togther to Winter Park last year. I'd definitely suggest that park for someone who's trying to work their way up and get better! I loved it.
@Krissycake, never water skiied before, hopefully we can try it on honeymoon in Aruba.
@minn, thanks for the suggestion, i'll have to look into it. Maybe for our 1 year anniversary we'll wait to winter and go on a trip.
we ski we ski! I used to be on a racing team. DH snowboards as well. Ive done it once, but I was not sooooo good lol. We were in Winter Park, CO last winter for a vaca (my favorite ski spot in the US! Seriously, fi you have the chance, GO) and we were on a double Black Diamond mogul course at the peak and I partially tore my ACL and TORE meniscus. And skiied the rest of the way down the mountain lol.
wow kelly that's crazy. I'm so not ready for double blacks. We ski at Mountain Creek and i've done their black diamond which i'm told in Colorado would be like an intermediate trail so i'm not ready for that yet. Plus the runs are really really short from what I hear compared to doing "real" skiing.
I LOVE to ski! I went on at least 2 trips a year throughout high school and into college, but haven't had enough money these past few years. I would love to find a way to make a trip happen this winter.
FI doesn't ski but wants to learn. I was supposed to take him and teach him last winter, but we didn't have the money. I'm kinda worried about teaching him, though. I have been known to give up on learners because it was cutting into my limited lift time (I'm a gem, I know) - so hopefully he catches on fast (or I gain some patience)!
@melodicsighs1 haha that's so funny, FI had the patience of a saint to teach me, I actually cursed him out the whole way down one run. It was a little too hard for me, well that's how I saw it, and i'm like YOU Suck I hate skiing, I'm never trusting you again, all the way down the mountain.... haha
It is expensive, but i'm so addicted now. O and FI and FFIL have a rule that every time you go skiing you have to do something above your level, whether practicing a technique or trying a new run. Which equals for me a terrorizing experience, but they always coach me through and i'm doing pretty good.
I snowboard and he skis. We met at our home resort when we were both working there, and it's a huge part of who we are as a couple and as individuals. This is a lifelong thing for us, and we've lived the mountain ski bum lifestyle. He hasn't done as much backcountry skiing as I have, so it's fun to go out there together. We don't always ski/board together though... because a lot of my time is spent shredding with my girlfirends (who kick all ass!)
@QBr1tSh1n1ngStar yeah it was intense but it was awesome. I tore it like halfway down. It suuucked! Ive also been skiing since I was about 7, so almost 20 years lol Yikes. that makes me sound Ooooold
We live in Montana, and had 3 inches of snow this morning and a low of 4 degrees Farenheight tonight... yep, we ski. If you don't find something to do outside in this climate, you'll go crazy.
I'm hoping to have a better year on the slopes than I did last year!
I live in Colorado and I am a skiier! Just got my season pass!
Yep! We both ski (tele for me, downhill for him) and snowboard. I'm not sure how old I was when I started on my own skis, maybe 3 or 4? I grew up with a little resort 40 minutes from our house and Breckenridge/Aspen/Vail were are just a few hours away and my dad's pretty much still a ski bum so that's not too surprising. :-)
Oddly enough, one of the ways that I knew my husband was the man for me was because we could ski together well! (Which was not the case with previous boyfriends - it always just ended up being stressful.)
Unfortunately we don't get to go very often any more. It's just too expensive when you can't buy a pass. Even with a pass it still takes a chunk out of your wallet.
I ski a lot. My family has a place in Breck, so I ski Breck all the time, but I would recommend Copper if you've only skied a year. I think it is so much more interesting to be in Summit County rather than over in WP. But I have friends who only ski winter park.
Copper, Keystone and Breck are all in Summit County and there is lots to do if you take a couple days to ski.
Your pass to Breck usually works at Keystone too...and Keystone has night skiing. Breck & Keystone are owned by Vail resorts, Copper and WP are owned by Intrawest.
I have a pass to Vail, the Beav, A-Basin, Breck and Keystone (all Vail resorts) but I try to ski Copper once a year because I love it so much!
I skied WP for the first time in like 12 years last year, and it was really fun too.
When you get really good then you can go to Vail, but don't go there first because it will spoil you :)
I used to ski, but now I snowboard! My FI hasn't done either before so for Christmas I'm sending him to ski school. He's gotta learn sometime so we can have winter family vacations :)
Ah I want to try snowboarding. My FI does both, although I am a better skier than him. I found him $5 skis at a garage sale last year and made him ski last season, but he needs new snowboard boots, which I am thinking would be a GREAT wedding gift!
PS: They are saying Colorado is supposed to get a ton of snow this year. whoever "they" are. I think that it's because of our mild summer...we are supposed to get dumped on this winter. Might be a good year to come out...plus I think there will be some deals with the economy being how it is.
Wow..I sound like a spokeswoman for Colorado Tourism or something.
I guess i'm the only east coast skier, but over here they tell me if you can ski here you can ski anywhere. My first season I learned to ski on pure ice. Than one day it snowed and I freaked out and kept messing up. But now i'm much better than that.
@Colorado Bride, I would Love to do a trip out there, but after wedding and honeymoon, I think we're gonna have to ride this year out. Hopefully next year we can do something.
@recessionista, I so hear that, no one in my family does, so i'm so glad to learn i've always wanted to do it and it's such a cool experience to be out there in the snow. We are going to try to get my mom to go this year. She has no idea what she's in for.
@caitlanc, it does get expensive, i am now willing to forego other things just to save up for passes. I really think i'm becoming a must ski no matter what type of person. its so agonizing in the inbetween weather like now when it's getting cool and rainy but not cool enough for snow.
@CHK what happened last year? I can't believe you have snow already.. that's crazy.
@Br1tsh: Take a trip to Vancouver!! We have countless mountains to choose from, plus Whistler/Blackcomb. We're also only 2 hours north of Mt. Baker in Washington state :) During the winter we don't get really any snow (we're at sea level) but the mountains are covered with fresh powder, so there's still of opportunities to check out the city!
Haha no I don't work for tourism BC... I just love it here :)
I love to ski and am looking forward to it this winter. My FH has never skiied so I don't know if he will try or not so we will see what happens this winter.
@ Recessionista, there are so many places i wanna try, hopefully we'll be able to maybe do a trip every year. I am so so blessed that my FI opened this world up to me, I love it so much.
@goodart, you have to get him out there, he has to at least try it once or twice. I'm sure you could teach him. Or get him in some classes.
@ British- My skiing last year sucked, and for no apparent reason! I'm transitioning between being a really great blue skiier to skiing with FI, who's all about the double black diamonds. And I want to get that good, I just need to get more courage to do it. I literally feel like I'm going to pee my pants sometimes because I'm so nervous!
I snowboard, he ski's (alpine & telemark). We've been in Colorado for 5 years, transplanted from upstate NY where I learned to snowboard on a sheet of ice. We actually went out yesterday and took some DIY engagement photos in the snowy trees!
Br1tSh1n1ngStar - Agreed! I've never skiied back East, but I have friends from Michigan and they used to ski on a sheet of ice that covered the local dump. I have no doubt that if you can get down the hill there you'd be fine here. The biggest thing is getting used to the steeper slopes (and altitude.) They can look freaky but the amazing snow makes a huge difference!
I skied once, and it was pretty miserable for me... that's what I get for learning to ski in Virginia.
I feel like skiing is too high class for the likes of me... even though I can afford to ski now, I grew up thinking skiing was beyond my reach. It's so hard to change that mindset! I also never went to the doctor growing up, o that's also hard to change up... :-)

Hey guys, just curious how many of you ski with your FI or DH, I have been skiing for 2 years, FI has been skiing his whole life. His whole family skies, and they've taught me and I'm so addicted. I can't wait for snow this winter and to get back outside!
Also I was just wondering if anyone has gotten a skier's edge, they don't list prices on their website and I was wondering what the price range was. So I don't have to call or e-mail and get hit with a bunch of spam or junk mail.
