I have a BSW, and live in Australia. I get paid about $80,000 pa. (I don’t work FT though.) SW in Australia have varied salaries, with the average around $55,000.

Olivepepper:  can I ask what kind of work you do? I have a BSW too, and I live in Sydney, but I’m only working p/t in an entry level position, so earning a fair bit less.

MrsGarrityToBe:  I’m not a social worker, but I work at a non-profit that employs social workers. I’m not 100% positive, but our MSWs start at around 55-60K. We pay really well, though, and thus never have a lot of openings!

MrsGarrityToBe:  I make that, but most social workers in Australia do not. It does seem that we pay higher over here, but our cost of living is expensive.

MrsGarrityToBe:  I am graduating with my MSW in May but I don’t have a job yet. What I can say is if u r hospital based you tend to make more rather than working in a community based agency.

MrsGarrityToBe:  I graduated with my BSW last year, and got a ful. Time job several months after graduation. I make ~30k in an entry level position with 8 weeks paid vacation and good insurance benefits…..definitely not in it for the money!

And to be honest, I’m not sure if major in it again. I do love my job, but having a higher pay grade would be really helpful.

MrsGarrityToBe:  U can teach at the college level with a masters but u will not be tenured. However, u can teach ft at a community college with a masters. With a MSW u can be a hybrid counselor & instructor. I’m actually interning @ a community college now.
