dance with my father by luther vandross. if a bride with a father who had passed away danced to that song, i would bawl my eyes out.
I love Christmas music. Like LOVE. I secretly listen to Christmas music in July. Probably won't be able to sneak it into the wedding playlists though!

We're having an R&B band at the reception, so there are a number of songs that I would love to have played, but are not in the band's set list. We asked them to learn a new song for our first dance, but felt bad asking them to learn a bunch of new music, so we're sticking to their songs. I'm sure the songs they do play will be great, but it'd also be nice to hear some of our favorites that aren't R&B (i.e. Jimmy Buffet, Widespread Panic, Beatles, etc.).
We're not allowed secular music during the ceremony, and I had my heart set on a friend from college singing "Candle on the Water." But alas, no go. : (

I think this is a dancer thing, hah, but I love hip hop and rap, but if a single song played at my wedding party, my 94 year old grandmother would faint, hah
"Band of Gold" by Freda Payne is "my song." I don't relate to it at all, but boy can I belt it out! I love, love, love that song. However, it wasn't really appropriate for a wedding reception... "now that you're gone, all that's left is a band of gold...." Not so much.
My fiance and I are making our own playlist, and we're playing whatever we want to. =D Although, we are limiting ourselves in lots of ways. We don't want to play break-up/dirty-sex songs at our wedding. Which does get rid of some of our favourite songs. =)
But we are playing a range of music -- country, R&B, dance, pop, jazz, classical, etc. -- and some involve swearing that we are not going to bleep out. Sorry, but no. We will warn parents on our wedding website, but if they choose to bring their kids and are offended...oh wells!
I actually wanted to play "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" by Tracy Lawerance, when the wedding party comes out. (Before my father and I walk out) But, some people in the family disapprove of country music in the church.
I really want to enter the reception to the postal service's "sound of settling." i may still be able to ask our DJ to play it during the night, but the fiance nixed it as an entry song really quickly.
haha! my fiance have no scruples when it comes to music. we have already agreed to come out to "the stroke" by billy squire. and there will certainly be an eclectic mix of music, everything from punk to 80's new wave.
but our first dance is going to be to band of horses, "no one's gonna love you (more than i do)."
We both like electronic music, which would only work if we had our wedding where we met... but we were able to sneak in a few songs. Our cake cutting song was "Sugar is Sweeter" and our recessional "Higher State of Consciousness" by Josh Winks. Also, we had our DJ play a special mix of Stevie Nicks' "Planets of the Universe" that me & a friend of mine (who introduced me to the mister) LOVED to dance to.
Ha....we're also picking a list of songs to play. Mostly punk....it's harmless and no one but my friends will know any of the songs but they are truly us. We also have a list of old school hip hop songs that are oh so much fun. We hope to do a good mix so everyone has a good time, not just us.
We sort of love "The Seed" by the Roots. But, yeah, completely inappropriate. :)
ddchandl...I feel you! BAby got back would be so AWESOME! But a lot of the older guests and the pastor would freak. I'm going to make sure I play "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" no matter what!
One of my favorite bands is Alexisonfire - I dont think my family would like to hear any scream-o music!
I listen to alot of different genres and I know alot of people 'don't get it' so I will stick with the 'main stream'
Oh, we played Baby Got Back. And people were dnacing and having fun! But, our DJ reserved it for 9pm and later music. Up until then, it was "safe" music until it was obvoius the bride was drunk and getting her funk on, too.We had mainstream Justin Timberlake and "YOu know you want me, CAlle Ocho" too. Which my mom danced to....=]
I got lots and lots and lots of compliments on our DJ and how awesome his music selection was. People had fun, man!
We had Baby Got Back at our wedding too! Similar to ejs4y8, we had 2 different dance segments. One was mostly older dance songs and slow songs, and the other was full of "younger" dance music. You can guess when Baby Got Back was played! I 100% trusted our DJ and pretty much gave him free reign. I asked him to play to the crowd, and that's exactly what he did! It was a blast and the dance floor was packed! (However, I did make a conscious effort NOT to ask certain guests' opinions on the music selection...you can't please everybody!)
I love love love NIN but......none of their songs are really wedding appropriate. I could just see my family passing out when the first line of Reptile goes "she spreads herself wide open to let the insects in."
LOL @ the christmas music. I feel the same about Monster Mash. I will listen to that song year round :)
Cupcake! I love that song too, and last time in Las Vegas, I did a very drunken karaoke version of it.
Yeah, I was there for a wedding. Not my finest moment. But, FUN!
Some of my favorite everyday bands are Radiohead, Pixies, Blur, Weezer, Pavement, Placebo... stuff like that. His faves are Metallica, NIN, TypeO Negative, etc. So, I don't know that eithe of us will have a great ton of what we would consider "party music." Especially when his friends give me mass amounts of crap for my taste in music, which is only bc I told him years ago I would never ever date a Metallica fan.
Luckily, we both are fans are of old standards. So, there will be Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong, and def show tunes (for me!) during cocktails and dinner. For dancing, I think we'll end up doing some Motown and silly 80s new wave dance music.
I love heavy metal/hard rock and that is definitely not appropriate for a wedding... I do not want a mosh pit at our wedding haha

This question reminds me of that scene in the movie "The Hangover", where Dan Finnerty and the Dan Band did a rendition of 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" at the wedding reception. It was SO inappropriate but so funny at the same time. Sometimes you just have to go ixnay on the more "suggestive" songs even if they are popular.
Noelle-a-Belle: Huge NIN fan myself, but I agree, not so much appropriate music there. LOL @ Reptile! You could play WITT; it's semi-appropriate, but probably not danceable.
Uh... a lot of songs!! A lot of alternative stuff that you just can't dance to. And some that are just too inappropriate for the grandparents ;)
And I have a few songs that my DJ doesn't have, and I'm a nerd, so I'll admit it: Boys II Men "Motownphilly", Tom Cochrane "Life is a Highway" (it has to be that version!), Mr. Big "To Be With You" (one of my all time faves, seriously!), and Chuck Berry "You Never Can Tell" (from Pulp Fiction, I totally want to dance like Mia Wallace to it!) -- just to name a few.
But I don't care what anyone says... I'm playing the Pina Colada song no matter what! And Baby Got Back. HA!

Are there any songs that you would LOVE to play at your wedding but which are just...not appropriate, or your family would hate it, or....etc. etc.?
