Any stores give you cash refund for returned registry items?

My fiance and I are starting our registry soon but because we really want money, we're only registering for the essential items, in hopes that our parents will spread the word and people will just give us cash. But since there are people who like to send gifts, we've decided to register for a few things.

Does anyone know of any stores that will give you a refund for returned items and not store credit? When we originally asked Crate and Barrel, they said they would refund, but when I called again, they said store credit. BB&B says they'll issue a check refund but I just called and the guy said that it would be a store credit. We just want to make sure we can get cash for any unwanted items.

    Any suggestions?

Honestly, I wouldn't register at all. If anyone asks you parents can just spread the word that you need cash. Even if you register, people are going to give gifts that aren't on your registry. If you don't have a registry anywhere, most people will get the hint.

What if I just did like a 10 item registry at like Crate and Barrel? My mom and MIL are throwing me two showers so I feel like some people (my older relatives) will want to give a physical gift.

The point of showers are to shower the new couple with gifts. So with two showers, those 10 items are not going to go far. So you will either have a lot of people complaining that there is nothing left on your registry and/or people are just going to buy gifts from other places. I think very few people (especially an older more traditional crowd) will give you cash for your shower.

Yeah... maybe we'll register for only a limited number of items so people still feel like they have enough to choose from, but just not overdo it. We've been living together for almost 3 years so we don't really need very much. Does anyone know of any registry websites for honeymoon funds or house funds?

i agree with tessabella! if you really just want cash, you could always set up one of those alternative registries like miss cowboy boot for your honeymoon, down payment, etc.

you would know your guests best - i know some prefer giving a more "personal" gift over cash, and some would rather just give you cash.

i think that williams-sonoma has a cash return policy; i think a lot of stores are going store credit with the bad economy :(

Just wanted to second that Bed Bath and Beyond does this!

There is always the option of not registering at all - unfortunately, I think you might run the risk of getting something you really don't want, if people still want to give a gift but have no idea what you need. At least if you register at a store you love, you can get store credit.

One little nugget my wedding planner shared with me - you can actually register for gift cards. I'd never heard of this but it may be a nice alternative for you.

If you really don't want any *things*, the shower may disappoint you--the point of a shower is for people to give the bride *gifts*, not cash. I almost always give money for a wedding, but I always buy a gift for the shower.

Anyway I disagree that people will get the hint if you don't register--people are basically dumb. ;) If you don't register, you will get random crap that you can't return. If you do register, you will get random crap that you can't return AND you'll get stuff off the registry. You'll probably get some money either way.

I think BB&B is the best bet for cash returns, but it sounds like they are getting iffy, too. Maybe you should register somewhere that you can actually *use* the store credit at some point in the future. Maybe Macy's? Amazon?

I spread the word for my shower that i need lingerie..and that's exactly what I got!! A lot of them came from department stores where i normally shop. Easy to return and use the credit. Plus the lingerie was beautiful and the nighties (not so pretty ones) are super comfy. I won't ever have to buy nighties again. Although I'm sure FI wants me to wear none of the above when we sleep. ha!

We thought B,B&B returned for cash because they did as of about a year ago. However they definitely changed their policy!! They told us store credit only. It's a bummer but at least you can save the credit- there's always going to be things you need down the line!!

ugh really?  Thats the only reason we registered there (and got a SH*T TON OF DOUBLES) over WS.  Grumble.  Im sure if you throw an absolute fit their customer service dept will do it IF you registered when that was the policy.  We still have all our paperwork that says that, Ill be sure to make a stink Cool

Unless we break down and exchange it for the awesome coffee pot we didnt get...
